Dear Iseult,

It looks to me like Kosovo is about to repeat its history for the 7th time in 130 years...oh dear what a miscalculation again from UK and US...

I wonder if Political officers in UNMIK realise what is about turn up on their doorstep...

For those that might be confused by all the smoke and mirrors---Kosovo is Serbia, and it is going to stay that way even when the cockroaches rule the world.

laluc, you're absolutely correct. They didn't mention status or independence at all in the article. And I suspect, as you said, that the status will not be a major, if at all, topic.
The topic at hand is how well the 6Pt plan is being implemented. The 6pt plan that is bound to res 1244, which clearly states that Kosovo is a province within Serbia. Hence there is no need for a status discussion, as status is already resolved.

Now, you can make allusions to A-plan, and the list of supportive countries, but within the UN the status is, and has been decided. No changes.
It would seem more so now that Kosovo's leadership should be talking about status, as it is obvious that within the world's major international organizations of nations that Kosovo is a provincal terrotory of Serbia, and not an independent country onto herself.

At the end of the day, without both parties demonstrating an honest willingness to talk and craft a mutually acceptable (if not favourable) solution, Kosovo's status will remain in limbo.
Kosovo's leadership is keeping Kosovo in limbo more so than Serbia's leadership.
Both sides a playing their stupid polictical games at the expense of the peoples that they claim to support and care for.

The only thing they truly need to talk about is North Kosovo and its "status". The rest of Kosovo is lost and they do need to talk about religous buildings, etc...

Laluc - I would hardly call the status issue settled as far as the UN goes when it's own Resolution confirms that Kosovo is still part of Serbia, and many of its members do not agree that Kosovo is independent at all.

As Ian UK says, the situation may be stalemate, but what he misses is the fact that Serbia retains legal sovereignty and Kosovo has not yet achieved independence. That is not an equal situation where one retains and one is unable to illegally annex territory.

The Northern part of Kosovo will remain Serbian and the rest of the province will become a protectorate - frozen in limbo without full independence.

Anyone who underestimates the strength of feeling on both sides about this issue and has a 'just move on' attitude just doesn't get it.

You know, these talks are NOT about the status of Kosovo. Sorry to break the news to you. That part has already been settled.

As the article clearly says, they're discussing the issues of customs, police, justice, transportation, and protection of religious buildings.

I don't see the words "status", "independence", "Serbia" or any related phrases in there.

Ciao.

Whats the point in letting the UN discuss Kosovo?
We already know whats going to happen, US, UK and France will veto anything anti-Kosovo. Russia and probably China veto anything pro-Kosovo.
Stale mate, discussing Kosovo is a waste of UN time and UN money.

Please, can't someone tell the UN that Thaci says that its not up for discussion ;-)
(Srboslav, 4 March 2009 10:56)

Thaci and his gang has nothing to do with the UN. Not that I expect that to change in the next decades. :-P

This story proves two things to those who believe that Kosovo is a 'done deal':

Status is still being discussed; and the 6 points implemented.

I just hope that the UN continues to stick to international law. Otherwise international security will have finally been shredded.

Waffle, waffle and more waffle! This whole debacle highlights the fact that the UN is irrelevant and is a tool of US foreign policy. So what are they meeting for - to present reports that are full of lies and state that everything is wunderbar! The reports that get to the UN are so sanitised and airbrushed that they bear no resemblance to the reality on the ground!

Ron

Now the UN must show that it is willing to defend international law. And that it will do everything to implement its own resolutions.

Yes, indeed: 1244!

Srboslav

But.. But... But...

Why are they discussing the 6 point plan when Pristina says its dead and "Kosova" is a "independent country" ?

I thought that Mrs Clinton said it was a done deal, then why are they discussing it then?

Please, can't someone tell the UN that Thaci says that its not up for discussion ;-)
