Aljosa,

While I understand your point, I'd just like to point out that comparison between Vojvodina and States of the USA or Canada is not legitimate.

US states, such as Texas were for a very long time separate countries, California, New Mexico belonged to Mexico proper, New Orleans was a French colony...etc.

USA is not a country per se, it is a union of states, as is Canada.

Did you know that USA does NOT have an official language at federal level?

We cannot compare Vojvodina or Kosovo to the US states, as they are simply entirely different entities.

I do understand your points, overall, though.

no, Janos,
you will go to Hungaria if you don't like whatever.
One thing you forgot (just to expand on this way of arguing) RS is predominantly Serbian as well as Vojvodina is.Maybe that fact will help you draw some illuminating conclusions.

it will go eaither way.
Vojvodina must have more rights equals as serbia or it will go with hungaria.just the same as bosnians serbs want.

I'm divided on this issue. On the one hand Vojvodina has every right to manage its provincial budget just like a province in Canada has a provincial budget and a federal budget. There are a couple of things that concern me such as the right to sign international agreements( more or less concerning), comparing Vojvodina to Republika Srpska, stating in the statute that Vojvodina is a province of its citizens, Vojvodina is a province of Serbia and a European region, and something about a Vojvodina arts and science academy.
Vojvodina is not an exeption if the statute passes, in the world there are many provinces, autonomous regions that have the same if not more rights. For example American states have state laws and federal laws
-transportation(speeding)itd.
-pro choice, same sex marrage, gun laws, itd.. now california has made a proposition to legalise marijuana sipmply b/c they are tired of being kept back by the rest of red neck America(red states) maybe there is some similarity to how Vojvodina feels. We know Ohio and illinois have signed many international agreements with Serbia(Ohio guard training program itd).
However, Serbia is a small country and is somewhat still fragile so i can understand the paranoia but it's really not smart to mention Kosovo when discussing Vojvodina. I know there is this conspiracy theory on EU's policy towards Serbia and that is justifiable thinking and i don't disagree. It would be smart for Serbia not to oppose the entire statute it will only create further ideological divisions with in Serbia. Instead why not go further and give belgrade something similar to Vojvodina and do the same for Sumadija itd.. This way it makes it impossible to even think of seperation since every Serbian region will be in the same boat and Vojvodina wont feel like an exeption to the rest of Serbia(b92 had an article regarding 7 economic regions with in Serbia)
Changes should be made to the statute concerning Vojvodina being a province for its citizens since it undermines Serbia's constitution. It should be a province for all of Serbia's citizens. It is also concerning to mention Vojvodina is a province of Serbia and then mention it is also a European region. That makes no sense at all since we all know Vojvodina is a European region but what is the point of stating this in the statute? Lets hypothetically say Serbia joins the EU and the EU becomes increasingly influential, undermining Serbia's state soverginty(lisbon treaty). If Serbia parts ways with the EU and Vojvodina's parlament disagrees cause who knows maybe they like the cash more i garantee you the EU will analyze Vojvodina's statute and say Vojvodina has a right to stay since their statute mentions its a European region and if that's the will of the citizens of Vojvodina(vojvodina is a province of it's citizens, stated by its statute) we support it. This is why wording is extremely important and should not be rushed. I don't know if some of you remember the German ambasador to Serbia in 2007 made a scandalous statment comparing the fate of Vojvodina with Kosovo if Serbia does not comply. Serbia sent a protest letter to Germany at the time, so nothing can suprise me of the EU anymore. There is also no way Republika Srpska can be compared with Vojvodina since it clearly states "Republika" and not autonomous Srpska.

ps: i agree the Hungarian politicians have their own interests and it's frankly an insult to believe his motives are genuine. I mean it's true decetralization is evident in every EU country but it has nothing to do with speeding Serbia's path towards the EU.
Nice try

Will Serbia beg them to take more than autonomy, less than independence a few years from now? That's why the Albanians choose independence at any cost: promises are quickly taken back.

veki - I completely agree with your Statement.

I am in Québec, and what Sarkozy told Harper was exactly right. Hard on separatists in Quebec are blind to the economic difficulty they would face if they're separated. They fail to see that all the money Feds pump into Quebec would end in a heartbeat. Not to mention that Quebec would need to pay off their share of national debt before it separates and value their new currency - whatever that may be.
It is worth mention that a lot of people here are no longer bothered about separating as much. Bloc Québécois is losing its purpose.

Sarkozy's comments are relfextive of the world today under the current political and economic climate. (even if he isn't)

Decentralization of Serbia is just ridiculous move, and the statue Vojvodina asks for things, no other region in Europe, or even world enjoys.
I hope opposition will continue to be strong and not give into this ridiculous and insulting statements.

All this indicates is that broken Serbia is the only thing that would make EU happy.
Disgusting.

"....that Serbia's further decentralization would be an extremely positive signal on its way towards EU integration."

I sincerely wonder if there is anyone who believes in this kind of statement?

Who (and why) will welcome Serbia's further 'decentralisation'? To join the EU? Never heard of that condition in my life.

Just one comment from Canada from a couple of days ago: Sarkozy discouraged Quebec separatist aspirations by saying:"Do you think that amidst all economic turmoil world needs another breakaway state/province? We need to get together not break apart. "

Dear Vojvodina high officials, world is rapidly changing. What seemed like a progressive rationale until a year ago is no more.

Update, please.

How dare those maniac notionalistic government officals refuse your statute? How dare they try to protect their own country's territorial integrity?
