Then why do you want to join EU?
(theKosovar, 11 February 2009 02:07)

Do I want or not (I did, actually) - it does not matter. Where I am, it's all EU around.
Otherwise please read the rest what I wrote: "everything else is even worse and nothing better was invented yet." A reason good enough.

Regarding Russia: I happen to know better what it is than the overwhelming majority here. It is a very difficult and long topic. In order to be successful with Russia you have to be powerful enough to set your own rules. Serbia is far weaker than YU was a while ago.

BTW: same applies to EU/USA, of course - just fortunately EU is not a single country. Serbia has many supporters and many not-so-supporters there.

Serbia must recognize Kosova or they aren't allowed to join EU. Does serbs think they can join together with Kosova ?
Kosova is an free country now and Serbia does not have any kind of control of Kosova.
The Balkan would have it's end with hateness if Serbia just sign to recognize Kosova.
Everybody would live in peace and make business between both countries.

"With the strong support of devoted friends such as Hungary"

I am glad that Serbia feels like that towards Countries that recognized Kosova/o as independent.

"Serbia could become an official candidate for EU membership and wind up on "the white Schengen list" by the end of 2009, Jeremic said."

In theory I guess everything is possible...best of luck anyways.

the government of Serbia realizes that it is important for Serbia to join the EU as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, EU is evil.
Even more unfortunately - everything else is even worse and nothing better was invented yet.

I guess Vuk Jeremic doesn't realise that enlargement of the EU is principally handled by the European Commission. And I guess he didn't hear Olli Rehn diplomatically tell Belgrade not to think about submitting its EU application. Either Jeremic doesn't listen to the European Commission or he is just saying things that don't correspond to reality. I wonder which it is?

From the looks of it, Serbia is on the right track to getting everything in place to be able to get on the white list. To be honest though there will be resistance from some EU members. The best way to circumvent this would be to allow anyone flying out of Belgrade to the EU to not require visas. This would be a great first step and would give an opportunity for Serbia to prove it has met the requirements. The best part is that it would probably be able to implement something like this within a matter of weeks.

Jeremić stressed that "the central strategic priority of the Serbian government is to rapidly move the country toward membership in the EU."

Unlike many Serbs on this site, the government of Serbia realizes that it is important for Serbia to join the EU as soon as possible.
