When the UK joined the EEU we were told it was a trade organisation not a'Eurostate with Germany in the lead. The mess the world is in shows the incompetence of our politicians. Don't join, you will loose control of your borders and country- as for getting work in the EU ordinary Serbs will find that the EU wants to allow millions of immigrants from outside the EU in to work. the EU is about arrogant, power mad politicians feathering their own nest and keeping ordinary people down. Tell the EU to get stuffed!!!

for T Payne:

It seems to me that many people in the UK are against the European Union.

The UK will lose because of its euroscepticism. Soon, Denmark will adopt the Euro. Sweden will probably follow Denmark and will also adopt the Euro. Iceland will probably join the EU and adopt the Euro.

The UK will be isolated if she remains outside the Eurozone.

In conclusion, Mr. T Payne, the UK will be more and more isolated due to its euroscepticism.

Mircea, you are getting really annoying now with your threats to Serbs. "If you don't do everything EU tells you, you will be doomed, blah blah blah".

What is your stake in all this? Why do you care so much if Serbia joins or not? How is this going to improve your life?

Maybe the questions should be what will Serbia have to give up in order to join that makes you desperate for Serbia to join?

The last question is the one I really would like you to answer.

"As is mentioned in the all time best seller - Enter through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Serbia will take the narrow gate thank you very much.
(ZK, 6 February 2009 16:38) "

And you're absolutely sure Serbia knows where this 'narrow door' is? It just seems that Serbia has been moving through that "wide gate and broad road" to its destiny for much of its history in the Balkans.

It’s probably a waste of time responding to Mircea, unless one finds it fun.

If you look at his (?) comments everywhere around the B92 English language site, they tend to be set phrases, often recycled and altered (sometimes only slightly) in order to fit certain B92 articles or in his deficient responses to others.

In fact, the standard of Mircea's English is also suspiciously too good for someone who apparently isn’t from an English speaking nation. Even I make more mistakes than that!

The glaring exception is where he (?) fails to begin any proper noun related to Russia with a capital letter, indicating amateurish and spiteful propaganda techniques.

Even if I agreed with Mircea's naïve and ingratiating obsession with the EU (and I’m not against some form of European economic unity in principle) I would still be embarrassed by the fawning language and techniques of persuasion he employs.

In England we say that when something seems too good to be true, it is usually not true.

“Moreover, Serbia will be an isolated country if she remains outside the EU. (Mircea, 6 February 2009 10:56)”

Threatening to isolate us if we don’t fall into lock step with the demands of the Big 3 in the EU isn’t going to work Mircea.

Why would any self respecting nation do that to themselves?

Mircea, thing is we want good relations with the EU AND Russia. Its not an either\or situation.

You’re saying we’re going to be punished if we don’t do everything the EU tells us to? You’re essentially telling us that we need to automatically give up all our rights now.

You’ve got to realize that we Serbs belonged to a nice multi-ethnic country called Yugoslavia, and we all know how that ended.

Why would we want to jump on board another similar experiment?

You see Mircea, because you don’t have a strong background in democracy, you think its OK to bully everyone into joining. I say respect the wishes of the people that live in Serbia. We don’t want to join if that means giving up Kosovo, it’s as simple as that. Treat us with respect and we’ll do the same in return.

I’m sorry Stalin, that evil guy from GEORGIA NOT RUSSIA, did some terrible things to your country, but you’ve got to understand even the Russian people suffered dreadfully under his reign. Even Stalin knew better than to try to bully us, why would you try?

Russia and the Russian people have always been good to us, and you’re demanding that we break ties with them simply for the possibility of faster economic development?

Look I’m all for revamping Serbia to make her a better country, I’m all for cooperation with the Hague, but I am not in support of selling our Soul for a few pieces of silver.

Many Serbs on this site want Serbia to be closer to Russia. On the other hand, all of Serbia's neighbors want to advance on the road to the EU.

And during WWII most of Serbia's neighbours joined the NAZIs too as they thought it was the right path but they ended up being on the wrong side then also.

No, Mircaea. Serbia shouldn't look east and shouldn't look west exclusively. Serbia should look anywhere if it's in int's interest -- like a country should.

Honestly, Serbia can't trust the west. They've broken their promise on the Interim Trade Agreement, the billions in aid Djindjic was to receive for unconstitutionally extraditing Milosevic and a host of other issues.

At least the Russians have fulfilled their promises they have already delivered the cash for NIS, they plan to increase South Stream capacity and lastly they support our autonomy.

Also. Serbia shouldn't pursue membership so long as Solana is a prominent bureuacrat. Serbia has received nothing good from this man except the idiotic Solania agreement regarding Serbia and Montenegro and bombing, he also supports Kosovo independence.

Also. Serbia shouldn't exclusively look to Russia. Look at agriculkture our idiotic leaders say, "we can earn billions if we join the EU from it" but that's an idiotic claim since the EU protects it's farmers instead they should look to Arab states who need food but can't grow it and are willing to pay a higher price [after all Serbia only uses only 30% of it's potential for agriculture on current land].

The NATO court in the Hague closes next year and Serbia will most definitely not be a member of the EU by then so why the rush? It is nice to hear that anti-EU sentiment is on the rise as Serbians realise that path will lead to nowhere.

The question being whether the EU will even exist by the time Serbia is ready to join? With huge protests in France, the UK protesting against Italy and Portugal, anarchy in Greece, Bulgaria protesting against Romania, huge protests and riots in Latvia, Hungary taking billions in loans to stay afloat and this is just the beginning.

So as member states take protectionist measures to save their own economies the whole point of EU unity gets flushed down the toilet.

This so-called Serbian government is focusing way to much on boarding a sinking ship known as the Euro-Atlantic alliance. An alliance that has more debt than it can service.

It's true that the whole world will be affected by the financial meltdown but our friends will fare much better than our foes. The balance of power is shifting in our favour and it's time to take advantage of that.

Those carrots coming from the EU and US are now beginning to rot and I can see the people are noticing the stench.

Time is on our side once again and historically after a struggle, Serbians have always come out on the right side. It is in our nature to remain free and independent and that is the way it will be!

Those Serbs who are against EU membership should realize that Serbia will develop at a much slower rate than her neighbors if Serbia does not join the EU. Moreover, Serbia will be an isolated country if she remains outside the EU.

In conclusion, Serbia has no choice but to join the EU.
