No, we don't realize it, because we never did it. We can't realize things that never happened. We realize that there were huge waves of ethnic cleansing of Albanians in the '30s and after WWII, in the 50s'. In Turkey there are hundreds of thousands of K-Albanians whose families left Kosovo and Central/Western Macedonia by that time.

Please come up with real facts, if you want to be taken seriously.

Mr Q, do you know anything about the history of this conflict? That is one of the most ill informed comments that I have ever read on here. You basically just said "Serbia, please leave those poor people alone. They didn't do anything to you." Do you realize that Albanians crossed over the border and just basically took over a section of Serbia? I won't argue that Milosevic didn't over-step human decency, but please don't try to say that ethnic Albanians in Kosovo are just victims entitled to free land and did nothing wrong. They staged a revolt! You can't just walk into a country and say "We are a majority now, give us your land!" What Milosevic did was wrong, but you can't punish an entire country forever because of it. Should we break up Germany and Austria now and give it all away because of one idiot? Maybe we should just give Belgrade back to the Turks. After all, they took it over by force many times over hundreds of years.....

I know everybody who believes in the law and justice is upset after reading extracts from life according to Doris Pack. But she doesn't speak for everyone in the EU. She is merely reflecting the special relationship Germany has with anyone in the region who isn't Serbian it goes back a long time, covering at least two World Wars. logic,
It is ironic that you mention the busing of students in USA. I don't think it was the best method, but it showed a commitment of the US govt to bring equality to the racial mixture of America. Was it successful--what is the race of the president we just innaugarated.
If you took a survey in Serbia if it is possible that an Albanian or Roma, etc could one day be President of Serbia I think it would probably be close to 100% no. IN 1950 if you took a survey and ask if it would be possible for a black man to be president in the US it would have been close to 100% no.
If there is no effort to bring the people together the ethnic divisions in the balkans will remain forever.
The sad thing is that most posters here (both sides) think that is a good thing.

Mr Q

I think it is time for serbia to stop bullying and leave kosova alone. Haven't they done enough harm to kosova but now are trying with all their might to prevent the poorest country in Europe from developing and progressing. Well done to Kosova as they have shown the whole world that they can make a civilised and mutiethnic country. It is Serbia that is manipulating Kosovar Serbs for it's political and ideological aims of having as much territory as it possibly can after the break up of Yugoslavia. I genuinly feel sorry for Kosovar Serbs and the way they are treated by so called mother land. Milosevic's war is over and there is no point in trying to win in paece what was lost in war. Kosova has unfortunately got a very long and hard way ahead but will become fully fledged independent and internationally recognized country. I hope, Serbia will come to terms with the fact that Kosova is a neighbour countery and together with Kosovar government to help it's people to lead a normal life. Nationalizm has never solevd any problem and never will. Kosova has swallowed its pride and decided to have a multi ethnic state giving the 6% of the population (Serbs) equal rights as the rest of the country over 90% Albanians. Europe is not going to collapse in 2 years and Europe is an old democracy and respect the views of everybody but in the end both serbia and Kosova are going to be part of it. I dream of the day when I am going to write here and together with Serbs and others that post in hare laugh about our own naive comments and feel ashamed of the fact how we are badmouthing each other. Hope one day Ballkan hatered will disappear and we'll all be Europians.

logic

pre 15 godina

Doris Pack, so clearly impressed by all things made USA, lamenting about EU not being USA! Wrong marketing try - very many people within EU are truly fed up with that union as it is already: why to wish for something even worse?
And the idea of forming multi-ethnic university in central Kosovo so the students of different ethnicity will have opportunity to study together, must be coming from the hearts of those students. It reminds me of the total fiasco of USA educational plan to bring the students of Hispanic and African-American poor neighborhoods closer to their white well to do counterparts. Poor kids were schlepped daily back and forth to those "better" schools in "better" neighborhoods. The result of the experiment? What started with so much and loud fanfare ended pretty soon in pretty much of silence.
And, you know,if a diplomat doesn't know to cook, that doesn't mean the people will eat the junk food he/she offers.

“MEPs encourage Serbia to offer further evidence of these constructive steps, which coincide with its aspirations to join the EU.”

Serbian public opinion on joining the EU is now down to 61% and dropping fast, nearly a 10% decline in a short time. Add recognizing Kosovo as a condition, and 70% oppose it.

Eliminate the economic benefits of joining the EU because of the Global Depression and I think you’ll see the EU dropped like a hot potato very soon.

I really like Tadic, he’s tried very hard to build bridges with the entire world, both East and West, as it should be. Too bad the EU didn’t live up to any of their promises to him.

The EU claims to support democracy, I hope they live up to their promises when a non-EU party comes to power in Serbia.

Doris Pack, as well as the entire EU mentality, is disgusting. They don't care one bit about the Serbian nation, or about peace and stability in the Western Balkans- only what the EU agenda calls for. And what they want is for Serbia to accept Kosovo's UDI before they would even consider Serbia for EU membership. The EU is wrong in their stance, and they didn't realize that tearing Kosovo away from Serbia was going to be that difficult- even after they were able to manipulate Tadic to "win" last May's election. The EU is like a rabid dog who will not let go of their victim. Leave Serbia alone, and let us live in peace. Serbia has never been an aggressor nation- unlike Germany (read "EU"), and it has a longer and richer history than most EU countries. Stay the course, "Majka Srbija".

A 'multiethnic' university in Kosovo?? Just how will that work when anyone who speaks Serbian is attacked by albanian mobs for simply speaking their language?? I guess they plan on having military escorts for Serbian professors and students in and out of class, to the cafeteria, to and from their dorms/homes? The whole thing is one big sick joke. The EU's behaviour with regards to Kosovo is a big blot of shame on their faces.
Stay the course and never give in Serbia, our time will soon come to put things right.

So basically we can expect the EU to to a lot of self-patting for a job that it thinks its doing, but ethnic and social divisions not only remain, but have widened in Kosovo since last year.

Does anyone here honestly think this multiethnic university envisioned by armchair diplomats is really going to work? Does the end of 1244 (defacto or UN approved) mean that Serbia is legally clear to reoccupy its own province?

(Another Canadian Serb, 4 February 2009 12:14)

And what would that business be Another Canadian Serb?
Finishing the job that Milosevic and many of his predecessors tried?

Based on the comments here, Serbs really have no idea about what the story of Kosovo really is.

They are prepared to take into considerion the most stupid conspirative theories of Eu, USa and the World against Serbia, but they are still not capable of considering the truth.

And the truth is simple: Kosovo deserves its independence. Kosov is far, FAR better off now than under Serbian rule.

Kosovo IS independent Mr. Owens.
I guess the comments made by the Serbian posters made you think the opposite.

The only thing successful about Kosovo, is that more Serbs have been eradicated.

By "Serbia getting back in business", do you mean the sort of business it did before (in Kosovo)?

Rick, beautifully said.

Notice that Doris Pack still refers to the Ahtisari plan even though it is dead. These Eurocrats are so clueless, so lost, so immoral, that it boggles the mind.

Cheers!!

The EU claims to support democracy, I hope they live up to their promises when a non-EU party comes to power in Serbia.

logic,
It is ironic that you mention the busing of students in USA.

Any question as to what the goal of EULEX (with Serbian blessing) truly is???

Mike

So basically we can expect the EU to to a lot of self-patting for a job that it thinks its doing, but ethnic and social divisions not only remain, but have widened in Kosovo since last year.

Does anyone here honestly think this multiethnic university envisioned by armchair diplomats is really going to work? I mean it sounds wonderful, but we're not exactly talking about two societies with superficial differences. I have a feeling that all these grand institutional projects may fall short due to cultural incongruency.

I'm sure she remembers how Albanians and Germans worked closely together in the forties to clean up the Kosovan countryside.

Doris is a lovely person I am sure. Go Doris. Go Germany.

Lets see what happens and then react.

I think I have come to the conclusion that all these politicians are clueless and do not have either side's interests at heart, especially the EU. They both acknowledge Kosovo's independence and at the same time stroke Belgrade & skip over the fact that the ICJ has the legality of the declaration pending. There is an old saying "Too many cooks spoil the broth". Maybe we should just have a 3 month moratorium on the publishing of all opinions in the press. Really, when was the last time the press did us all any good?

Well, Serge, i suppose you know that Transylvania is not an UN-territory. We had no Milosevici who lost several wars!

"Do you realize that Albanians crossed over the border and just basically took over a section of Serbia"?

No, we don't realize it, because we never did it. We can't realize things that never happened. We realize that there were huge waves of ethnic cleansing of Albanians in the '30s and after WWII, in the 50s'. In Turkey there are hundreds of thousands of K-Albanians whose families left Kosovo and Central/Western Macedonia by that time.

Please come up with real facts, if you want to be taken seriously.

Shame to EU and to those who think that the money covers anything!
