The problem is that NATO will not allow Albania and Kosovo to join as one state. Even if they try, NATO will no longer accept Albania into NATO.

No one has said Serbs aren't dreamers! Kosova will finally join Albania's arms. In 2 months Albania will be a NATO member as well and together we'll have a 5.5-6 million state vs. Serbia's 7.3 million.

'A perfect agreement would be the recognition of Kosovo.'

let me use the words of vladimir vladimirovich putin: 'you're freezing, aren’t you' :))

Obama should grasp this olive branch with graciousness and work with Russia as a partner.

The Russians probably are not certain as to whether to play hardball with the US, as Bush tried with Putin. First messages from the Kremlin after Obama's election were quite hardline. Some Russian analysts / advisors may assess that Obama's message is soft and in any bilateral meeting the US / Obama should be treated as a junior 'new' partner and not given so much respect. This approach put a serious spanner in Obama's works to create an image of himself as a conciliator and peacenik. Obama in turn would be pressued by hawks in his administration to pursue a hard line on Russia, as he must be seen as a strong president etc... From a presidency of hope, it could fast become a presidency of crisis management...

So the US must play it smart. I think at this stage a joint strategy on global terrorism and perhaps Russian input on the Palastinian / Israeli problem would be a smart move for both US and Russia.

This is really excellent news! I hope that all these stupid plans are scrapped, it's not the Cold War anymore. Good move by both sides indeed!

At last some sanity in international relations. Why should the hard-presed US taxpayer pay billions of dollars to finance a flawed weapons shield in Europe when they could use these monies to help their folks back home.Obama needs every single dollar to save the economy and not to start a new cold war with the Russians and a new arms race.

I wonder if the halting of plans has more to do with offering an olive branch, or the fact that the price of oil is remaining in the $40 a barrel range.
I have always felt the missle shield was an unnecessary step but now due to all the rhetoric there would have to be some type of agreement that would show neither side losing face.
A perfect agreement would be the recognition of Kosovo.

Now that the US wants to negotiate with Iran, it may lead to an agreement that will make the anti-missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic redundant. In which case there will longer be any need for Moscow to counter with its own defence system.

Seems that Serbia is not needed as a base to Russian missiles.

And it was never needed for that. Russia needs much more Serbia inside EU, as it has been announced in clear text recently.
