In Canada, one of the most progressive and diverse nations in the world, we have a system of have and have-not provinces. What this means is that depending on which provinces prosper for any given year (it changes from year to year), the provinces which run a surplus, subsidize those which run a deficit. There is no complaining in this regard. We see it as the right thing to do. In fact the east coast has been receiving millions in transfer payments for decades from Ontario, yet no outcry from Ontario.

If Vojvodina runs a surplus, it is reasonable that the wealth should be shared with all Serbian Citizens. Serbia has taken on enormous financial obligations by housing and caring for hundreds of thousands of refugees from places from which they have been ethnically cleansed, and this financial burden should fall on all of Serbia's citizens. My uncle is a disabled refugee from Krajina and he receives excellent medical care for no charge.

Sadly, this financial issue is being used for political purposes at the worst possible time. I believe the fellow raising this issue is an ethnic Hungarian and I hope he does not have ulterior motives although there are many loyal Hungarians to the Serbian state, as there is a loyal yet vocal minority in Serbia's other province of Kosovo.

Serbia truly is a great, tolerant, diverse, and wonderful country to live in.

vojvodina is Serbian land and it was from the austro-hungarian days and the majority are absolute Serbian with probably now more than 75% of the population since many Serbs from croatia and boania and kosovo live there, and the hungarian population is not what it was 10 years ago. now its maybe 220,000 even in those areas that were hungarian majority is now not are just a margin of a couple of percent. so no more talks over vojvodina in my books.

"We do not want separatism in Vojvodina, and we do not want to jeopardize Serbia as a state"

Then why do you want more autonomy? I'm sure this was the same things the Albanians, Croatians, and Slovenians said in the 1980s. Giving these people more autonomy is like giving a drug addict "one last hit".... they will always keep coming back for more.

Vojvodina is an outdated concept. Its origins are from the Austro-Hungarian days. Ethnic Serbs now make up an overwhelming majority in this Serbian province. I think Vojvodina province should be laid to rest, and it and the rest of Serbia should be drawn up into smaller, non-ethnically based oblasts like how they have in Bulgaria and Romania.
