Crime does not pay, says official

Justice Ministry Secretary of State Slobodan Homen says a law on forfeiture of assets is the most important one aimed at fighting organized crime.

Hmm just for your information Homen was from the neo-liberal wing of OTPOR (as opposed to Marovic and company) and was one of the first to jump ship to DS.

I don't doubt that he is happy persuing his ideological enemies, but lets just say that this individual benefitted very much from the Milosevic years....

North America enacted similar laws a while back and it has proved to be an effective tool against organized crime and an effective way to supplement law enforcement budgets. This takes away a lot of power from organized criminals, who remain powerful once they get out of prison. Now they when they get out they wont have an Audi A8 waiting for them at the gates of the prison, while the police who arrested him have take the bus home. (unfortunately the policeman will still probably have to take the bus home :(

The basis for this law as in other countries is a good one. However if you have a corrupt justice system it is a very dangerous law.
Only those in Serbia truly know which is the case.
