i agree with you of course, "shocked," and repeat again and again that what we all have in common is so much more than what we don't. that we often need to ignore the politicians and find a way to come together, person to person. and i do try to practice what i preach.
but of course it is more complicated than all that: the elites have a great responsibility to bear, but out-of-control nationalism is alive and well and deeply internalized, chock full of venom, and you read it hear day after day. of course i don't like personal attacks directed against me, stupid and immature as they are, and always published in FULL, thank you very much. but it is the barrages of ethnic hate that i really cannot stand, so replete with hate slurs, which, again, are published here daily, uncensored, as proud as they are bigoted. and these people never take responsibility, they always claim that they are just telling the "truth" about that "opposing" people. it is sickening and should never be tolerated but of course we do.

Should Bosnian Muslims have the whole of Bosnia to govern as they please and exclude the others?
Should Croatia allow Serb refugees to return and allow them to live without fear and without Nazi reminders like the checkered symbol on their flag to which they expect Serbs to swear allegence? The same flag they exterminated hundreds of thousands of them in WW2. It's like asking the Jews to accept a swastika on the German flag and swear allegence to it.

Really, I am shocked. That these two peoples were able to hold back their illogical rages and tempers against eachother is one massive step towards normality. However, I must admit they I truely believe it to be in the peoples of the Balkans to live and let live, but I do not think that any of the elite leadership wishes to allow these hatreds to disappear, that they want a populous of ill mannered, ill informed and ill minded people willing to do any series of stupid acts in the name of some greater abstraction.
You've all been fighting over this swath of land, stalling your progress towards modernizations, squandering the free international handouts as if your country was rich enough to put all the money in the pockets of the elite without the majority of the poor noticing. Your elite was infact able to pull the wool over your eyes, has infact graciously taken monies that were destined for the people and lined their own coffers. They've told you that the enemy speaks a different language, that the enemy is over the other side of the river, border, city, or wherever. They've told you what they want you to hear and you've all swallowed this load of tripe and smiled like it was torte.
1 small act of sanity does not erase the acts of idiocy, but 1 act is always the first step.
