Here you Robert, a brief extract from ‘I only live on to tell’ of Father Zef Pllumi. That should give you a flavor of Albanian Stalinism. Check the site too, Robert Elsie has done a grand job with his collection of Alb literature and history. A must have on your favorites browse.

As for the infamous bunkers, they were only used during the desperate years of prohibited love, nowadays motels have sprung up like mushrooms after the rain.
After socialist collapse it was thought that they might be used as concrete blocks for the eventual enlargement of Abania's main port but the cost of collecting the wretched things over passed that of the whole reconstruction project 10 fold. Only in Albania.

Oh you guys and gals at b92... come on. you always run this "glamour," larger-than-life portrait of dodik, with those huge baby-blues (albeit bags under his eyes, but hey, none of us are perfect.) and now with berisha, i mean it looks like he just popped a zit or was bitten by a bug, and is trying to staunch the bleeding... i mean come on!

and now a question for my very knowledgeable albanian colleagues: is albania still full of those ubiquitous cold-war era concrete huts, and how are they now used? i've read they used to function as hide-aways for secret love-trysts, so to speak, far from the tattle-tale espione.

not to trivialize those bad old days. i entitled one of my chapters about hoxja (sp?): "the craziest commie in creation." no offense intended, of course. but once when we were on the bus from albania to kosovo/a, one young man was busy defending the Great Leader to me, rationalizing all of his (bizarre) acts as somehow appropriate responses to those cold war conditions. yet another argument on an over-heated bus, oh when will i learn to mind my tongue? :)

so, any comments? thanks.

ps albania really does have an impressive coastline.

This is a highly symbolic gesture with no bearing whatsoever. Judiciary and public office in Albania will always be the domain of former communist and their descendants. In fact, adjectives like communist, socialist etc are totally irrelevant. In post socialist Albania political squabbles have involved two identical twins fighting over the spoils of public ownership, brought in by the terror of their forefathers in the first place.

This law won't be respected as it should because Berisha would be the first one to go. Anyways, he has no chance of winning the next June elections, that's why he and his cronies approved this law only now instead of the start of his mandate.

And B92, nice picture of him you got there. :) He is still cuter than Jeremic though.
