"You as an anti-American, who used to tell for a long time that the US does not count anymore and can't hurt Europe anymore because Europe is now THE big power are confronted with the reality on a daily basis. Yes the US can hurt Europe pretty badly in bad times. Since summer 2007 hundreds of billions of losses originated in the US were "swelloded" by European banks and small taxpayers...even old retired people. I am sorry for the European "little guy". I am much less sorry for the loss by all those nasty anti-Americans, who for years whished our economic and military collapse.

Sure Joe, by all means continue to be the proverbial ostrich with its stuck head in the sand ..... at the rate your government is talking about more and more state bailouts and more and more legislations to curb your crooked fund managers and banks and car industries, the rest of us can be forgiven for thinking that we are looking at the Socialist People's Republic of the USA!

More like "started" in the US, but to imply that this is some American-wide effort to destablilize the rest of the world is erroneous. Corruption and greed are not particular to any region or ethnicity, and while the financial crisis started in the US, the reverberations in Europe and elsewhere are an indication of how banks the world over are tied to each other. Lots of Americans are struggling this Christmas season, and those that get hit the hardest are the bystanders; rarely the perpetrators.

Leonidas,

Yes solvency in the banking sector is becoming a world-wide problem. I am afraid that we did not see the end of all these frauds yet. NSVP8

another MADE-IN-USA crisis

No Iowe, it's not a made in usa crisis, it's a made in usa greed. But at the end we all know what lies and greed has been spreaded by the current but FORTUNATELY outgoing irresponsible and crimininal administration, so one should not expect a better behaviour from the white collars....

Bush is so respected that shoes are now flying around to catch him, can it go any further down, doubtfull!
Don't recall having ever seen this kind of hilarous scene towards any President, it says all!

Joe, it is certainly irrelevant who is the strongest or not, but rather more relevant to clean all this mess that came from the us.

I feel sorry for the average people, wherever they are, that will suffer the most but yes am glad that this enornous stinky bubble finally bursted and would be even happier to see the originators ending up in jail, including the current administration.

I wish a lot of luck to President Obama in which so many Europeans have been placing their hopes for a better world!

Where were the regulators?Where were the auditors? It's incredible that a day light fraud is being committed for so long without anybody raising any questions.

My guess is that Madof's scum
is the tip of the iceberg with more frauds in the future surfacing.

The fact that banks all over the world are refusing to reveal their liabilities is an indication that the information contained on their balance sheets is fraudelent. The problem with the banking sector is one of solvency not liquidity.
