The chinese are no alternative. Theyexport three brands toRomania: Geely, Great Wall and Martin Motors.Altogether sold this year about 130 cars. Even Lada was more successful (200 cars). They have no market in Europe.

This is very bad news for jobs in the region and the economy of Serbia generally.

However it was highly predictable!!!

I mentioned before the Fiat deal was a false promise used by the likes of Markovic of Jagodina, Dinkic, Delic and the rest of the D yeS to all that EU demands to dupe citizens and sway their voting intentions. D yeS to all that EU demands came into government on the assurances that to vote for them would bring western investment, jobs and economic development - what guarantees did they get? None, big fat Nada and now with a predicatble (long awaited cyclical) down turn such investment as promised by D yeS to all that EU demands will never happen.

Luciano, the eastern direction is right but Japanese carmakers are in exactly the same boat as their western counterparts. Serbia should have enticed the Chinese car makers such as Geely, Chery Automobile Co. or Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp - this could have been a real startegic coup by Serbia. China would have seen this as a "possible" future foothold into the EU - at the very least in the SEE economic zone where their cars would have fitted well in the local markets. These Chinese manufacturers are the real future of car production globally since the west has gone bust on over excuberant fraud!

I agree with Luciano Serbia should bring in the biggest and best car companies to run Zastava since they obviously know how to do it, and lets face it Fiat has never been overly popular outside of Italy...

for the longest time I have been advising the Serbs to entice Honda or Toyota to Serbia even if it had to offer them free land and no taxes for the first 50 years.Fiat is not going to turn Serbia into an automobile powerhouse in the Balkans.
