No new conditions, says Italian ambassador

Recognizing Kosovo can't be a condition for Serbia to join the EU since some member-states have not done that either, says Italian Ambassador Alessandro Merola.

who is so naive to believe in a consense of all EU states concernig the EU integration of Serbia under the current conditions ??

of course there must be found a sustainable solution for Kosovo. I wonder, what Serbia can offer better than accepting the independence of Kosovo - and I am convinced, the vast majority of Serbian citizens will support this.

what a shame, that they never have been asked directly for almost one decade. the political elite seems to fear the opinion of the souvereign, which are the citizens of Serbia.

Mladic will be not enough to enter the EU - it is only the next step of Serbia towards the status of an EU canditate - but that's all. the EU will not buy the problem caused by Belgrade - and which was prolonged until today.

when you are in a dead end, which direction you would go?

If the EU forces Serbia to recognize Kosovo then they are forcing us to do something that is against our will. It probably won't stop there. In the future they will continue to pressure us to accept things we don't believe in and issues we are against. If that is the case we don't need Europe. Becoming slaves for a little money. No thanks! Norway and Switzerland are not in the EU but still two of the most prosporous countries in the world.

Ron,

Kosova declared the independence based on the 1244 and up to this day 53 countries have recognized it, 22 of EU among them.

The deal was not done in 1999 to put an end to the war and save human lives. A noble gesture which everyone appreciates,

I'm totally disappointed by my country's position, it's buying into the Serbian government's argument that they're actually trying to find Mladic, but they don't know where he is. All the operations we're seeing these days are just a smoke screen, and Italy shouldn't support such a behaviour. The only proof that Serbia is trying to arrest Mladic would be seeing Mladic on a one way flight to Sheveningen.

The eu is in a bad position; it can't accept Serbia into the eu without accepting the "so-called independent Kosovo" because it knows Serbia will deny Kosovo entry into the eu. The eu will need to change its rules regarding the right of each eu nation to veto major decisions. If it tries to do that, the eu will break apart. This is the price of europe participating in us unilateralism. Everybody knows that it was the us that promoted and pushed the UDI.

JohnBoy,

For most I agree. Kosovo really is a big problem for EU. Spain and other countries will not recognize Kosovo. How can a country (let me stress that Kosovo is NOT a country) enter the EU if part of the EU does not recognize it.

And yes, we still got 1244.

A big mess!

One question for the Serbs here: What happens if all EU countries recognize us? Czech Ambasador said that more EU recognitions are coming. EU will take 6-10 years for you and that's a long time for Spain and Cyprus. Will you leave the EU path?

Thumbs up for Italy. And more EU countries should face the fact: 1244 means that Kosovo is part of Serbia.

If not, why was this deal made back in 1999?
