Tell me who your friends are, and I shall tell you who you are.

So, let us take a look at this friend of Serbia. Wikipedia (with all its flaws) has this to say:

"Egypt has been a republic since June 18, 1953. President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak has been the President of the Republic since October 14, 1981, following the assassination of former-President Mohammed Anwar El-Sadat. Mubarak is currently serving his fifth term in office. He is the leader of the ruling National Democratic Party. Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Nazif was sworn in as Prime Minister on July 9, 2004, following the resignation of Dr. Atef Ebeid from his office.

Although power is ostensibly organized under a multi-party semi-presidential system, whereby the executive power is theoretically divided between the President and the Prime Minister, in practice it rests almost solely with the President who traditionally has been elected in single-candidate elections for more than fifty years. Egypt also holds regular multi-party parliamentary elections. The last presidential election, in which Mubarak won a fifth consecutive term, was held in September 2005."

Maybe my views of democracy is not as advanced as other people, but a president that has remained in office for 27 years, being "re-elected" 5 times without any alternative candidates, does not sound very democratic to me. And in a way that is very reminiscent of the way Putin hand-picked Medvedev to follow him as president of Russia (another friend of Serbia), Hosni Mubarak is preparing for his son Gamal Mubarak to take over the presidency.

Yep - with such friends Serbia surely is in great company.

Interesting to see that Serbia sides with Islamic countries. Didn't the Serbian officials used to say until recently that Kosovo will become an Islamic terrorist state in the heart of the Europe? And that Serbia is not only defending its soveregnty but also the European values?
(Piktori, 25 November 2008 19:11)

Serbia has no problem having good relations with any country, whether it be Islamic, Jewish, Catholic or Hindu. What Serbia has a problem is terrorists.

Serbia is not anti Muslim, only anti terrorism, which Kosovo Albanians know a bit about.
The good relations which Serbia enjoys with Islamic countries proves they are not anti Muslim.

Egypt is very wrong. They forget their biggest hero was Albanian. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, aka Ali Pasha, founded the modern Egyptian State, bringing democracy and stability to Egypt. Now that the Albanians need help from Egypt they forget their own history which was dominated by an Albanian, who revolutionized the very country they live in. GO READ YOUR HISTORY YOU ARABS!

Kosova and US of A is home of Islam and Saudi Arabia.

Every now and then I read something so totally "out there" that I do a double take. This comment is one of them....

Arsim, the United States is many things, some good (able to bring aid to disaster zones all over the world in a quicker time than anyone) and some bad (recognition of Serbia's province of Kosovo & Metohija as being a country). ONE thing the US is NOT is the home of Islam. My country was built on the foundations of Judeo-Christian values. Kosovo is a red herring, my country's ridiculous recognition of the province is all about showing muslims, all over the world, that we are just as nice to them (Kosovo, Bosnia) as we are bad to them (Iraq, Afghanistan and others).

After all, when someone starts talking this or that regarding the US govt's persecution of Muslims in the Middle East, whether in the press or the halls of diplomacy, my country can point at your dreadful little "country" and say,...see, no we're not.

Lastly, the day Islam tries to take a hold in America is the day Islam finds out what "the right to bear arms" in my country's Constitution means...let's just leave it at that.

Ataman, Sure Russia has fault along with China, India etc., but so does US and UK etc. There really is no difference between the elites in those countries.

Do you really think that America has any higher moral ground to stand on than Russia?

Just ask South America how moral they are.

All governments are much the same. Doing business with America is not safer than doing business with Russia. They are all for themselves only.

Your point escapes me here.

All I wanted to say was that belittling Egypt for taking this stand is silly. They are not unimportant as many players who do matter politically like Russia and China are on Serbia's side.

So belittling Egypt and giving Naru importance because of their stand is laughable.
I was not going to get into morality of those countries but only their importance on the world scene.

The Arab League will never recognise this NATO imperialist entity when the right of self determination is cynically denied to the Palestinian people who unlike Kosmet's Albanians have a rightful claim.

There are a number of Albanian propoganda web sites declaring Egypt will, in the VERY near future recognise the Serbian province of KiM as an independant country......

I think you are all being duped by your corrupt government and even more corrupt western backers.

By the time the ICJ gives it's ruling you will have probably have around 65 countries who have recognised this farce. Once the ruling is public that number will reduce by around 40%.

So then it will be back to the table Barack, Merkel, Brown et al to come up with a solution ACCEPTABLE to the Internationally and lawfully recognised Country of Serbia.

As for getting the Arab League on board you have no chance. UAE only recognised because it's more like Vegas in Dubai these day's than an Islamic country.

Guys, its called diplomacy. Ring a bell? No wonder Mr Vuk 'air miles' Jeremic is running rings around you lot.

US WAS impressive once upon a time, but new powers are emerging now and they are on Serbia's side.

It's all just a matter of time.

Peggy,

Unfortunately I can tell you a LOT about Russia. I used the word "depressing" earlier because of two posts. Now, speaking about Russia's ruling elite, government and government mentality - I can say the word "depressing" a million of times. :(

BTW: I was born there. And compared with China... Russia is really a peachy and happy place. I do not use to say much about that here, but I know not a single relative or family friend who is really happy.

I wish Serbia to have as tough business stance towards "us" as possible while dealing with these cleptocrates. Do not get caught off-guard while dealing with these criminals. Who has the Russian government as a "friend" does not need enemies.

Egypt is a strog supporter of panarabism and expect us albanian to be strong supporter of panalbanism§Egypt has excellent relation with our nation(from the to now when egyp and president sadate welcomed king leka...) So don't worry for the egyptian position,we know that they are proalbanian, and will favor the one nation solution:shqiperia ethnike!

so, mr. ataman, voy ckajeete po ryccki... i knew it was something, but not that. i do like yr fancy typewriter :() and yes, i know that dates me and i don't care...

i'm glad you agree with me (apparently) on yr assessment of the current russian govt., which is utterly deplorable. i'm sure there are many reasons for it, not the least of which was good old HAR-vard-inspired "shock therapy" of the 90s. but no excuses, it has gotten utterly gruesome. poisoned by plutonium indeed.

i studied russian in high school and one year college, when i had already decided to study german. Kein mehr Russki. my Un of Mich russian professor only passed me because she liked me (?), and at our closing party i got bombed on vodka (doesn't take much for me) but before i went down i was yacking in yr native tongue a mile a minute. funny how that can work.

i still say, and i mean it: our new president's guiding principle is Hope, not Hate, and i hope to god that THat message is what we carry out to the world, even and esp.ly in the former yugoslavia. i really grow tired of the hate fest, even as, at times, i am pulled right down into the mud and sludge...
