Bill @14. Are you keeping up with the news?

China just said they will back Serbia up. Russia has stated more than once they will stand by Serbia as well.
What are you talking about then?
You wish they would not support Serbia. But to your horror they will.

Peggy

Serbia on purely principal reasons. No one expects a change on the already
established foreign policy. Do you really see a pressing reason for such a change? It took Europe/America a long time to establish such a policy and believe it or not its proving to be a practical policy that is securing peace for the Balkans.

Bill
(Bill, 6 November 2008 02:08)

Your interpretation of security is different to mine.
The European leaders are breathing a sigh of relief now that Bush is gone. They admitted that working with Bush was difficult. Now they have a chance to work with a more moderate president and I'm sure they will want to change a few things.

The policy was forced by the US (Bush more precisely). He is out and new blood in.

Stay tuned for changes.

Peggy,

First, Russia and China have not and will not put their existence at Serbia's will. Russia has used Serbian grievance for its own interests. As for China, it really does not care much as to what happens in the Balkans. I don't think that there is any country in the world that supports Serbia on purely principal reasons. No one expects a change on the already
established foreign policy. Do you really see a pressing reason for such a change? It took Europe/America a long time to establish such a policy and believe it or not its proving to be a practical policy that is securing peace for the Balkans.

Do you guys know that Joe Biden was one of major formulators/supporters of US policy on Balkans, especially of Kosovo. Expect continuation or a more supportive US policy toward Kosovo.
(Bill, 5 November 2008 18:33)

Bill, Joe is only going to be the VP. You have already proclaimed him president by the looks of things. It's not going to be up to him but up to the whole adminstration, especially the president.

Obama has already stated that he wants closer ties to Russia and China. In order for that to happen he has to meet them half way. He has to give a little too.

Looks like Russia and China might be more important to him than Albania in the end.

Don't expect change over night, but expect it. It takes time to roll back some of the mistakes Clinton and Bush made. America has to find a way to remove herself from ugly policies while not looking like they are backing down.

I truly appreciate that there is much more ability to get information around the world....as witnessed by my activity here. However, don't be fooled that propaganda doesn't exist...especially in the American media. If you have followed the election anywhere other than Factcheck.org...you're getting some political "spin," which was overwhelmingly biased toward Obama.

Politicians are politicians the world over, they tell you what they think you want to hear in order to get elected. That's especially true here, where in essence there are only 2 choices (for now). However, in this instance, I believe that Obama will have to deliver on these promises...as he mobilized many first time voters who will have no loyalty to him if he doesn't deliver.

So, yes...you can read and watch. But, that's different from actually being here and will always remain so.

To LazaBrkonja; Good for you to be an American citizen and to be so close with the situation in the US. But this may come as a shock to you, read this. Thanks to the internet, media in general(free media)and other means ,we all have an equal chance this days to get a picture of the situations that you refer.Very diferent from before when whole nations could be hidden from the world, thanks to distorted state propaganda. Sometimes, somethings even if you have them in front of your eyes you can not see them ,at least clearly.

I am an American, so I may be much closer to the situation that many posting here. Obama's mandate here is one of change in policy...especially in the arena of international relations. He will withdraw troops from Iraq. He will withdraw troops from Afghanistan. The American people will support him in this as they are tired of paying for the US to be the world's policeman. The US population will overwhelmingly support troop withdrawl from both Kosovo and BH...they just don't remember that we have troops there.

Kosovo independence is all about the military presence at Camp Bonsteel and the ability to protect Caspian Sea oil to be delivered to the EU and US. Those Albanians in Kosovo who believe differently are fools believing their own propaganda. If Americans ever learn the truth of this....there will be zero support for American involvement in Kosovo.

The future will depend on which side is more adroit politically...but the opportunity for change has never been higher.

eulex can not deploy as they dont want to be under UN umbrella and status neutral. had it not been about this, they are already operational by now. the original plan was june17, 120 days after the illegal declaration of kosovo independence. the deployment is a legal equation not a resource question. now the US president is new and new cabinet has to form and needs time to form it to study the current issues, kosovo one of the many headaches.

Lets look at Korea and Japan, How about Germany and Italy?

Its not US foult that insurgents want to capitalise and surrender to the democraticly chosen government of Irak and Astan.
But its easier to pick and choose instead of looking back and analyzing.
Its funny that the US left Vietnam and look where they are today.
And Kosovo to the US is a state policy, no major change at all. But its nice that both Kosovars and Serbs can agree on the good fortune with the new "change" in presidency

Tatjana Stojkovic,

be sure, there will be CHANGE! And we're all happy about it (oh, most us , of course). But please just don't come back to slam Obama and/or Biden when the change will be really CHANGE.

Just to explain, CHANGE in politics is sth. that goes towards the future, the opposite is called RESTAURATION. More than elsewhere in the Balkans we need CHANGE today, not restauration

There will be many changes to the way US handles things internationally for sure. However expect the policy towards Kosovo to become more agressive not less.
Bush's policies on Kosovo was aimed at pulling out of Kosovo because it will always be seen as a Clinton issue he inherited.
Military action in Kosovo is over, therefore all wins in the country will be seen as diplomatic and peaceful means.
Investment and support in Kosovo will only be seen as a big win for Obama, along with the push to have both countries become part of the EU during his administration will be ecolades for his place in history.
Clinton removed the threat.
Bush pushed for independence.
Obama will make Kosovo an American success story.
