Peter,
rumors are that Russia is selling out Armenia for gas agreements with the Azeris. Azeris (more or less) are the only ones that sell directly to the world so if Russia helps them get their land back, they will sign. Armenia, has nothing to give.

Well I guess that in the end they will conclude that Nagorny Karabakh is a truly unique case and have to be independent, outside the UN, just like Kosovo...

Soon we can say hello to the worlds youngest state after Abkhazia and South Ossetia!

As usual, I agree with you Peter. While I can't help feel a small amount of Schadenfreude towards the West over their debacle in Georgia, I can't see Russia's aims in supporting independence for SO and Ab. It makes it even more confusing if they're coming up with a peaceful solution to NK, which is what should have happened all along.

The only reason I can see is this: Georgia is a real thorn in Russia's underside, and Saakashvili is seen as little more than a Western-backed demagogue. Azerbaijan on the other hand has been playing both sides since the USSR breakup and as such gets a more amicable treatment from Moscow in order to wean it away from the US.

It's good that Russia is trying to solve this old conflict, but it's strange they are trying now, given their conduct in the war with Georgia and the separatist conflict over there.

While I don't like Saakashvili in the slightest, it is still not an excuse to cause such problems for the country as what Russia did. So what can they help regarding Nagorno-Karabakh?
