Holbrooke and Ashdown are right. Dodik is simply a less overtly crazy version of the SDS that preceded him and he seems happy to take Bosnia to the brink of another war. Ordinary people are able to get along and tolerate each other if their leaders had the courage to ask them to do so - the end of WWII shows that.

Bosnia has been around in roughly its current form since the C10-12th. RS has no historical, geographical or political precedent. It is simply an attempt to create a mono-ethnic (fascist) entity, which failed. Such an entity has no place in a modern Europe. Serbs in Bosnia are better off within a multi-ethnic state run by new, younger leaders (Not Haris or Dodik). Becoming a distant ghetto of Serbia is not much fun and would result in greater poverty and backwardness than we are even seeing today.

It is an historical fact that RS was built on genocide. It has no future, and if Lajcak wasn't so keen to get out he would be stopping Dodik from continuing to issue implied threats of violence to returnees and other non-Serbs.

I think we should all try to be responsible and avoid fanning the flames of conflict further. A war in Bosnia would not be pretty for anyone involved.

"And that opportunity was the UDI of Kosovo.

Funny I thought the UDI was supposed to bring “stability” to the region and it seems to be doing anything BUT."

stability is there by UDI. And gues who tries to prove it otherwise?

Oh yes, Serbs in Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia...

And you all, clapping at the sideline, and cheerfully exercise your fingers in topics, predicting another disaster in the Balkans. Of course thanks to Serbs again and again and again....

Congratulations...

Roberto is also 100% spot on here. Bosnia is technically impossible to split up and that very fact has been shown so many times through history. Both Serbia and Croatia know that their best interest is to have stable and undivided Bosnia. They also know that dividing Bosnia would be highly inhuman and immoral act and some people like Mesic and Tadic understand that. So, as a Bosnian I'm absolutely sure that Bosnia will survive many centuries yet to come.

Common sense: Split it 3 ways and we can all live in peace and quite. But this is too much to handle for the rest of the world, Bosnia for some stupid reason is being used to show how the West's efforts have led to "a multi-cultural state that lives together in harmoney" hahaha! We're all too hard headed to live in harmony so why bother living together in this garbage when we can live seperate in peace.

In a few years the US will have other problems than Bosnia or the southern Serbian province Kosovo,i guarantee ya...

Bosnia is an artificial state and ill be carved up between Serbia and Croatia

Holbrooke and Ashdown are completely wrong. Silajdzic is really to blame for the origins of the crisis for his aggressive efforts throughout the years to use his position to eliminate the RS as an entity. Dodik's been a clean guy, but you can't expect him to just let Silajdzic try to eliminate the RS. On the contrary, in response to those efforts, one should any rational actor to resist and keep resisting even if it means secession. In the end, the more agressive Silajdzic becomes, the more secession makes sense. Anti RS and anti-Dodik pundits must look back at the consequences of the abolishment of Kosovo autonomy in the late eighties, which is similar to what Silajdzic wants to do to RS. Holbrooke and Ashdown, should understand they can't have things both ways.

I can't believe that after 15 years, outside politicians are still trying to figure out how to deal with Bosnia. There is one and only one solution to BiH and that is to adhere to the original Vance-Owen plan which was introduced in 1992. Bosnia to be seperated 3 ways, it's that simple. Northern Bosnia to the Serbs, central to the Muslims and southern to the Croats-Now how easy is that..

God, are there people who believe that fantasy?

Nobody destroyed Yugoslavia. It fell due to itsown weight! It is not that the different "ethnicities" in Yugoslavia could not live together, it was that the different republics and "enitities" could not function as a democratic body poilitc! How could you expect the Slovenians to feel binded by electoral results in Kosovo? (where the democratic standards are quite... different!)
Bosnia could work and did work as a democratic body politic, even at time when Serbs and Croats were at war in 1991! Everybody with a sound mine would have kept BiH whole, neutral, equidistanced fron Serbia and Croatia. To Roberto, never mind Bosnia falling to bits i would worry about your country Italy falling apart. I was in Napoli and it is just like Mexico no law, no order and dirt poor.Your comments about Serb Bosnia would mean that Germany is also a state founded as a result of Genocide?. The losses in the Conflict between Muslim and Christian Slavs equates equaly in propportion to thier respective population groups not my figures but those of the Sarajevo authorities. There will not be a new conflict as the country is Split in two on a demographic basis. Please explain why there are no serbs or croats in Sarajevo and why is Mostar still divided ethnically where no Serbs remain.

holbrooke and ashdown are 100% spot-on here, and it would it be nice if a few of the posters here would take the wax out of their respective ears and hear what they are saying.

bosnia is not up for grabs. if dodik or anyone else tries to hijack it there will be another war. this would be the 5th? war that serbia would be igniting (and losing) since 1990; everyone knows that dodik is a pawn and a cheap pawn at that, with all of his expensive suits not to mention homes! and that would not be such a pretty picture.

does "democratic" serbia really want to start another war? are they really so desperate? i thought they were supposed to be "western-leaning" now?? and headed to the EU, while destroying that possibility for all of their neighbors...

oh, my, how things have progressed so much since the 90's. (NOT)

so, unless you want to see another war, i suggest some people rethink their grand plans for "republika srpska" which is anyway built on genocide. so sick...

as for holbrooke and ashdown, well, they are not my favorite people (sorry) but in this case they speak the truth.

as for the eu, you have acted quite foolishly in the past, in fact, what you have done (and not done) is unconscionable. there is so much blood on your hands (and same fore the US as well.) while bosnia was burning, and everyone knew about the mass rapes and concentration camps, the "ethnic cleansing" and siege, europa just wrung its hands and dithered, or worse. and now it has come to this.

the so-called high-representative has apparently recently warned dodik to watch his mouth, or else... but that is a temporary fix. dodik absolutely needs to be removed from power -- that demaogogue should have been history long ago. and drastic changes need to happen, to move bosnia to a functoning, if not yet thriving entity.

and for all those bosnians who wish to live in another country (serbia, croatia, germany, wherever) that too should be facilitated. transportation, etc.

we need to act, and it is not too late, but the "international community" needs to show some spine!

Of course Holbrooke and Ashdown blame the Serbs. The problem is the muslims really who want to abolish any Serbian autonomy and be like Izetbegovich and make Bosnia into a "muslim nation" and go to muslim nation conferences and get aid from Iran. The Serbs of Bosnia will not be dictated to. They never wanted to secede from Yugoslavia in the first place. Muslims and Croats destroyed Bosnia not the Serbs. Oh, our lovely global interference would have gone so so smoothly had certain people not resisted our hegemony!

I don't care for Holbrooke, but you Mr Ashdown are guilty as charged as far as UK Law is concerned.

All the video footage that is around, all the experiences UK soldiers had to endure, whilst watching serbs shot at point blank range...

How did you get in the House of lords is obvious when you see the state of affairs in our own country, you're a failed politician...

If you had have become PM for UK, BiH is a great example of how you would have run our domestic and foreign policy issues...You idiot...

As for Holbrooke, well, hopefully some americans will say a few truthful words...

Ashdown and Tony Blair are Guilty as one for the mess they created in the Balkans...then again that s true UK foreign policy...Now we have Miliband, who looks like he fresh from the cloning farm...GM Miliband!

The geo-political interests of the US & EU have created a fine mess by breaking up the Yugoslavian federation.
We're told very forcefully that the various ethnicities in Yugoslavia could't live together and amazingly they went ahead and created another artificial state without taking into consideration the interests of the various ethnic groups that comprise the new state.
If these groups couldn't live
together in Yugoslavia why should they live together in Bosnia?
After thirteen years of EU colonial rule the Bosnian federation is virtually bankrupt and both Ashdown & Holbrook are already looking for scapegoats-Serbs that still want to join Serbia.
The ball is at EUs court and unless they come up with somethingpretty soon both Bosnia & Kosovo will become their achilles heal for many years to come.

It is becoming very clear that the Balkans cannot survive without Serbia and the Serbians. Why should we support fake Western creations by bankrupt nations? The fake entity of "Kosova" will end up the same way.

The only way for BiH to survive is to form some kind of union with Serbia and if the Croatians want to join their parts up with Croatia, then I'm sure we could come to some kind of agreement in exchange for Krajina.

The future is bright for Serbia.

nonono, please read again. The root of all problems are Russians who stick their nose into American domestic issues worldwide.

(Do you notice the evil twist in the last sentence?) It is a famous Hungarian joke. That is:

"The root of all problems are Russians who stick their nose into American domestic issues worldwide", that's the joke itself.

Under normal circumstances people listen to it and begin to laugh hysterically.

If I tell that joke to most Americans, the reaction is, they do not even notice, this is a joke. All they say: "yes, of course, this is true".

We also re-worded it:

"The root of all problems are Americans who stick their nose into Russian domestic issues worldwide."

And told some people in Russia. The reaction was precisely the same as of Americans. They did not notice, it's a sadistic joke.

I hope, most here understand what I mean.

Back to the topic: Holbrooke should hunt down these bears at Medvedja who menace his pet creation.

Bosnia will collapse, just as old Yugoslavia did and new puppet "Kosova" will.

An artificial state living on foreign aid can not be healthy and survive. Just look at the budget of the federation part of Bosnia and also in Kosovo, they are built on foreign aid and a lot of buracracy...

Ashdown thinks Izetbegovic is a hero, what rubbish he was due to go to the Hague and somehow had a nasty "fall" which ended in his death, strange that. Bosnia fell apart as soon as the 3 parties started on thier nationalist paths before and after the conflict. As for Silajdzic he should be in a prison for a long, long time.It is he who protects the Al Kaida remnents who fought on his side in the Civil war in the 90's but don,t forget who financed thier stay in Bosnia the CIA and the Clinton Government.

I am not argueing for the dismemberment of Bosnia , however, isn,t it odd that people vote on a religeous basis? All 3 parties are ethnically the same Slav people. Religion breeds hatred through its claim to be the only path to God. Religion is man made and God is mankinds invention. Ban nationalist Politics also religion and the State must be separate otherwise this area of the former SFRY IS DOOMED.

Oh dear, why am I not surprised Tricky Dick is once again placing the blame of all of the mismanagement of American foreign policy once more at the doorstep of Serbs?

Oh, our lovely global interference would have gone so so smoothly had certain people not resisted our hegemony!

"The root of all problems are Russians who stick their nose into American domestic issues worldwide" - good one Ataman.

If US reasoning for Kosovo's split was because of political Darwainism, I say it's time for Bosnia to die off via natural selection too.

What a load of rubbish!

Dodik, free your people

holbrooke and ashdown are 100% spot-on here, and it would it be nice if a few of the posters here would take the wax out of their respective ears and hear what they are saying.

bosnia is not up for grabs. if dodik or anyone else tries to hijack it there will be another war. this would be the 5th? war that serbia would be igniting (and losing) since 1990; everyone knows that dodik is a pawn and a cheap pawn at that, with all of his expensive suits not to mention homes! and that would not be such a pretty picture.

does "democratic" serbia really want to start another war? are they really so desperate? i thought they were supposed to be "western-leaning" now?? and headed to the EU, while destroying that possibility for all of their neighbors...

oh, my, how things have progressed so much since the 90's. (NOT)

so, unless you want to see another war, i suggest some people rethink their grand plans for "republika srpska" which is anyway built on genocide. so sick...

as for holbrooke and ashdown, well, they are not my favorite people (sorry) but in this case they speak the truth.

as for the eu, you have acted quite foolishly in the past, in fact, what you have done (and not done) is unconscionable. there is so much blood on your hands (and same fore the US as well.) while bosnia was burning, and everyone knew about the mass rapes and concentration camps, the "ethnic cleansing" and siege, europa just wrung its hands and dithered, or worse. and now it has come to this.

the so-called high-representative has apparently recently warned dodik to watch his mouth, or else... but that is a temporary fix. dodik absolutely needs to be removed from power -- that demaogogue should have been history long ago. and drastic changes need to happen, to move bosnia to a functoning, if not yet thriving entity.

and for all those bosnians who wish to live in another country (serbia, croatia, germany, wherever) that too should be facilitated. transportation, etc.

we need to act, and it is not too late, but the "international community" needs to show some spine!

Ashdown and Holbrooke what a team. Holbrooke is totally discredited as a mediator so anything this guy says should be taken with a pinch of salt.

And whats the problem?

Bosnia will collapse, just as old Yugoslavia did and new puppet "Kosova" will.

An artificial state living on foreign aid can not be healthy and survive. Just look at the budget of the federation part of Bosnia and also in Kosovo, they are built on foreign aid and a lot of buracracy...

nonono, please read again.

The Serbs should be left alone to continue the success of Republika Srpska.

“They add that Dodik’s long-term policy is clear, “to bring his Serb entity—the Republic of Srpska (RS)—into a position to break away as soon as the opportunity presents itself.“

And that opportunity was the UDI of Kosovo.

Funny I thought the UDI was supposed to bring “stability” to the region and it seems to be doing anything BUT.

Good Luck RS, On Your Way…

Dane, I expect you to support this as you’ve stated in the past.

Leonidas: "The geo-political interests of the US & EU have created a fine mess by breaking up the Yugoslavian federation.

Guess who did not let this to happen, opened the Pandora's box, invented the ethnic cleansing etc?

Herceg-Bosna

pre 15 godina

I can't believe that after 15 years, outside politicians are still trying to figure out how to deal with Bosnia. There is one and only one solution to BiH and that is to adhere to the original Vance-Owen plan which was introduced in 1992. Bosnia to be seperated 3 ways, it's that simple. Northern Bosnia to the Serbs, central to the Muslims and southern to the Croats-Now how easy is that..

Herceg Bosna, it's too easy for you to propose that plan now. You forget that Herceg Bosna was scrapped when Tudman agreed to give up his claims on that part of Bosnia in order to get American help to reconquer Kraijna and Slavonija. I suggest you to stop deluding yourself, Bosnia is a united country and will never be carved up. Most of all, Federacija will never be carved up!

Jesus... what nonsense do we have to read here?

if the Serb Republic in Bosnia is built on genocide, ...my dear Roberto, then what is the the stillborn puppet, the socalled Kosovo-Republjik temporarily existing on southern serbian soil?

killing the non-albanian population, torching their churches and monasteries, raping orthodox nuns... all that is nation-building, the albanian way, or what?

come on, give us a brake!

and just in case, you were an American, how would you call what the grandfathers of today´s US-citizens did to the native population in northern-america?

Common sense: Split it 3 ways and we can all live in peace and quite. But this is too much to handle for the rest of the world, Bosnia for some stupid reason is being used to show how the West's efforts have led to "a multi-cultural state that lives together in harmoney" hahaha! We're all too hard headed to live in harmony so why bother living together in this garbage when we can live seperate in peace.

Ako

pre 15 godina

Roberto is also 100% spot on here. Bosnia is technically impossible to split up and that very fact has been shown so many times through history. Both Serbia and Croatia know that their best interest is to have stable and undivided Bosnia. They also know that dividing Bosnia would be highly inhuman and immoral act and some people like Mesic and Tadic understand that. So, as a Bosnian I'm absolutely sure that Bosnia will survive many centuries yet to come.

Oh yes, Serbs in Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia...
