The EU lauds itself as a democratic union and this the great lie.
When they wanted the Maastricht Treaty approved they did not allow referenda to be held in every country - they allowed some countries to let their heads of state to approve of it and allowed france to have a referendum which was fixed and the Danes voted against it.
Then virtually the same proposition was put to the people and most heads of state approevd it (no referendum) and Ireland voted against the Lisbon treaty.
The EU consists of political hacks who do not consult their countries or their constituents.
They discourage countries from having a referendum ( ha! so democratic !.
When the countries have a referndum and it is rejected they come back a few years later, change the name of the treaty (same old treaty) and expect people to accept it!
THis is deceit on a massive scale and with no integrity.
If all countries had a referendum then this would be TRUE DEMOCRACY.
But the EU and the political hacks know that none of these "treaties" would ever be approved.
And they say Serbia and Kosovo should be resolved on the basis of democracy.
Methinks it is a clear case of the teapot and the kettle getting a might confused!
DOUBLE STANDARDS IS THE WAY THE EU WORKS !

Bildt has always been one of the more realistic international voices on the Balkans. He, like many others, recognises that the eventual compromise for Kosovo is partition. This is clearly a tilt in this direction. Let the KAs concentrate on themselves and protecting the remaining Serbs south of the Ibar and forget about the north. Its EU future will be covered by Belgrade's accession process.

Still, I am not hopeful that those countries that have pushed to hard for independence will take on board the message that a face-saving compromise is really the answer for regional stability in the long term.
