If you want to see why US capitalism is in crisis look no further than the actions of Henry Paulson. He is to finance what Rumsfield was to military strategy.
Paulson demands $700 billion without any questions asked as to what he is going to do with the money. He is trying to save all the corporate conmen that left $8 trillion black hole to the US economy and the need for the US&EU taxpayers to pick up the bill.
During his cross-examination in his testimony to the Senate Banking Committee Paulson just waffled and it was clear he had no plans how to deal with the crisis. He rejected proposals for restraint on CEOS pay and taxpayers participation in future profits of the banking sector.Instead he asked for draconian powers that could not be reviewed by any court or challenged by any civil authority. In other words, not only immunity but also reward for the biggest corporate theft in US history.
The emperor has no clothes.Long live the emperor.

It would seem that the republicans in congress are quite happy to fiddle while 'Imperial Rome' burns as long as it keeps McCain out of that chair that's waiting for him at the 'great debate'.

My suspicious nature predicts a 'break-through' on agreement at about the time the debate is scheduled to start.

Democracy in the US.

Frankly I couldn't care less that the Americans stagnate and rot in their negotiations. Just don't expect other Western taxpayerss to help bail you out!
