This issue will continue to drag on until the AMBO pipeline is complete. Once the oil in flowing into Albania and their economy is boosted by those funds, "Western" support for Kosovo can wane. At that point, they'll apologize and negotiate with Serbia to keep Camp Bonsteel in exchange for recanting their support for an independent Kosovo.

Just the humble opinion of someone watching from the US.

"What if everything goes the other way round........serbia gets back kosovo with its 2 milion albanians.can you people just imagine that?
(Funny, 19 September 2008 14:48)"

funny, that is not imagination...but future-reality.

except one thing. it´s 1.8 million k-albanians with serbian citizenship.

they are welcome of course, all others, who came from Albania after ´99, will have to prove their legal status and if they cannot, they will have to get back to where they came from...

wow, refreshing news ...

mr. gowan should keep it simple about fading eusa-power. it´s fading because of the "golden rule": the guys with all the gold (russia, china) make all the rules ....

so the wording "serbia should be allowed" is a little bit out of date, has to much "i´m still living in the 90ies" touch ....

refreshing part two: not even lifetime-ayatollah mullah thaci is phantasizing about nato and eu entry anymore, he realized that kosovo is and - for a short period of time - will be a hobby for washington and brussels, not more.

so, as long as the fed is faster in printing dollars then the real economy, kosovo has nothing to fear and a bright future of a few months ....

> Foreign analysts say that Serbia’s initiative in the UN General Assembly is in accordance with international law.
> “Personally I am all for allowing Serbia to ask the opinion of the ICJ,” Gowen told the BBC
> He added that in return “Serbia should accept the reality on the ground, and cooperate with the EU mission for the sake of the Serbs in northern Kosovo and in the enclaves.”

Sounds to me like the EC believes that 'Serbia's initiative at the GA will succeed & is offering to 'support it' in exchange for acceptance of EULEX.

Too little too late.

> Gowen warned that pressure and blackmail was not the way to gain the UN as an ally, adding that it would be “very sad if the EU, whose influence ... has fallen away drastically in the UN, sank to the level of using bully-boy tactics to push through its proposals and ideas, like some countries do.”

And as time goes on, the influence of 'brussels' will continue to wane precisely because it does resort to 'pressure', 'blackmail' & 'bully-boy tactics'.

That is what is truly sad about the EU Mr Gowen.

According to the report by the European Council for Foreign Affairs, the EU’s influence within the UN has waned in recent years, while that of Russia and China is on the rise.

Sounds very positive for Serbia.
I'm glad the article also mentions the bully tactics used by the EU. Looks like they are a bit on the nose of the UN at the moment.

it is quite reasonable behaviour of this man to say that in the current position.

if I were walking in his shoes, I would be saying exactly the same...
given that a lot of the k-albanians are quite young and not very experienced, they look up to "official persons" who are appearing on tv and telling them fairytales...
so to say, it makes sense, that he is making such a statement.

another question is, whether our k-albanian friends do believe that. :)

I would not, if I were an Albanian in the southern serbian province today.

some Europeans tried to prevent it, and they failed.
like published in an article of the "guardian" the independence-supporters in Europe had to concede defeat.

I share the opinion of Radoslav, time works for Serbia, and that is one of the reasons why I write "let´s just see what future brings" from time to time...

Russia and China are on the rise, yes indeed. but not only these two states... there is the whole Shanghai-group just about to rise...

our dear albanian friends are boasting about their "friendship" with "the one and only global superpower" while Serbia is securing REAL powers of the future.

As for the last paragraph, "According to the report by the European Council for Foreign Affairs, the EU’s influence within the UN has waned in recent years, while that of Russia and China is on the rise." that´s the bottom-line of the previously mentioned guardian-article.

Congratulations to Richard Gowen, someone from an English speaking nation with SOME insight. Mr. Gowen states "that the EU’s influence had fallen away in the UN because the EU’s actions often left the impression of double standards". But he contradicts himself by saying "“Serbia should accept the reality on the ground". Well just how did all those NATO troops get on the ground in the fist place? Let's see: Coerce the Serbs at Rambouillet, bomb anything you want over all of Serbia, and get the Serbs to fall for the idea that a cease fire will provide Kosovo to remain Serbian territory with a whole lot of autonomy. That sounds like "pressure and blackmail" to me. This is why some policies of the EU and the US seem myopic to everyone else in the UN. It boils down to double standars, and the ones applying the double standard don't see the double standard and wonder why there is such a problem with what they are trying to accomplish.

All the Albanians should read the last paragraph. Whatever happens in the short term is of no consequence to Serbia. The longer the status of Kosovo isn't definitively settled one way or the other, the stronger position Serbia finds itself in. As time goes by and Russia, China, India, Brazil and a host of other countries gain more and more power "Kosovo" will find itself in an increasingly weaker position. It's already seeing the results of that now with only 40 odd countries recognising them, about half being tiny states like Samoa. At best it'll get maybe another 10 recognitions, after that, it'll stop and so will "Kosovo" as a "country". Who's the daddy?

Of course you're not afraid Thaci. Because Kosovo broke away legally :) Is that why your sponsors are doing everything they can to prevent Serbia from going to the ICJ? And to think the albanians voted in someone like Thaci.

Anyway the comment "path of Kosovo’s future passes though Brussels and Washington, not Belgrade" is stupid. Right now it passes through New York (UN).

As for the comment "Serbia’s initiative would not help improve its relations with Kosovo", well this is downright ridiculous. How can Serbia have good relations with it's province when it is being run by an organ-trafficking drug dealer??!!

Oh and last but not least, the comment “By doing this, Serbia is once again proving that its policies have no vision when it comes to peace, stability, cooperation and integration within Euro-Atlantic structures,” excuse me for a moment while I wet my pants laughing! Our vision is not based on drug dealing or people trafficking. It is based on the rule of law and the development of a real economy.

The Non Aligned Nations should watch closely the US and the powerful members of the EU like UK, France, Germany, Italy as well its puppets in asia like Japan & South Korea as they will use "BULLYING" tactics to achieved what it wants in the world.
