"Why not just “leave it up to individual states” and sign the same trade agreement with every country but the Netherlands?
(Matthew, 12 September 2008 08:46)"

I don't think you can do that.
Every country in EU has to abide by the EU rules. Signing the agreement with individual states would mean nothing since no country in EU can operate on its free will especially when it comes to trade with countries outside EU.
Why do you think everyone wants to join EU?
Because outside of it's "difficult".

Peter RV

pre 15 godina

All this arguments here are completely stupid. Serbs should never join this Austro-Hungarian empire a.k.a. the EU.
Besides, this entity called EU won't last much longer. The rot is already setting in and it smells high heaven
Of course, the EU needs us much more than we need them.
Despite the appearances, they are scared stiff of the resurgent Russia, which might cause them a monumental headache in alliance with Serbia. On the other hand if the EU swallows Serbia they hope it it won't suffer a severe indigestion (they shouldn't count much on this one, Serbs are quite unpredictable).
Personnaly, I wish the Dutch and Belgium would block our 'candidacy' for at least another ten years,by then the demise of the EU would become obvious.

Elite clubs usually don't beg for members to join.

It is complete nonsense, to set conditions by Serbia to do a favour to EU and join?

What would Serbia bring to EUanyway? EU-friendly, open people? Wealth? Good infrastructure and employment for the unemployed EU citizens?

Non of the above.

Hruz,

Serbia is the most important player in Balkans.Simply, size, biggest economy, most populated, all other surrounding former Yugoslav countries have huge Serbian population.I could go on and on.It’s obvious EU with out any question wants to expand into Balkans. In order for them to do so, they defiantly need Serbia. Without Serbia they will never achieve total dominance in Balkans. And that is why Serbia can play their game.

Matthew

Hruz,

I’m all for Free Trade, so why not sign such an open Free Trade agreement with those countries wishing to do so, Greece for example. 26 EU countries have expressed a desire to have such an agreement with Serbia. Why not pursue it on an individual basis since the EU as a whole can not come to a unanimous decision on the issue?

You, yourself point out the absurdity of a single country holding back progress. If change does not happen, the first Balkan country into the EU will block all the others. The Kosovo precedent seems to have set the standard for getting around such thorny issues.

What's to complain about?
The same request stands; DELIVER ALL THE REMAINING WAR CRIMINALS, INCLUDING MLADIC AND HADZIC and then you can talk EU. Not 1, not 2 or 44 but ALL of them.
Then and only then Serbia can complain about EU breaking its word.

In the meanwhile why should EU give preference to Serbia while Serbia hasn't fulfilled ALL its Hague obligations yet, sells its oil company to Russia, plays a destructive role in Kosova, withdraws ambassadors from most EU countries and provoke most EU member states with ICJ requests.
Of course Serbia has the right to do all these but don't cry when EU tells it the way it is.

Milan...didn't you suggest that Serbia is no more on Thursday? I'm questioning your motivation for posting your comments if you feel that we, as Serbian, are over.

I may disagree with your comments of yesterday, however, I won't abandon you as you have abandoned us.

Fore once Serbia needs to set condition of her own. I would challenge EU. Set a date and simply say to EU, take us in by this date or forever say good bye to Serbia. After certain pre set date if EU is still playing their game, simply say good bye to EU and look else ware. There is a whole range of possibilities in the world for Serbia to prosper. EU needs Serbia moor then we need them. I am getting frustrated and sick of EUs games. Enough is enough.

^ in other words, with friends like the EU Tadic doesn't need the radicals as enemies.

Not only is full implementation of SAA blocked by the Dutch and Belguims -- they are now blocking the compromise part of the deal (interim trade agreement that circumvents the ratification process for the economic terms of the agreement), why? Because Serbia arrested Karadzic, not Mladic and we said "Arrest Mladic, because we think Karadzic will be harder to find." Never mind that all they said was "Increase co-operation with the Hague?"

Basically they are telling Tadic, "Exceed are expectations and we will reneg are promise?"

I wonder what will come next? Recognize EULEX, drop the ICJ case, sexually pleasure Brammertz, take in 150,000 undesirable migrants EU countries do not want, etc...

In all fairness, I hold no grudges with EU.
They just love this; “say you need me – OK – now you can’t have me”.
That is all it takes for gullible Serbs to start chasing the mirage.
But what is disturbing is the lack of understanding on the behalf of governing circles in Serbia that they are NOT welcome in EU. Not now, not ever.
The laundry list of the conditions will get ever longer.
So, why bother to stretch for something that is out of your reach?! Does it make sense?
Serbia should look for the alternatives, and there is ALWAYS an alternative regardless of the official mantra.
For crying out loud, take a good look at the darn globe; can’t you see more than just 27 EU countries there ( + USA)?
But, with the demise of any opposition in Serbia – EU knows well they can do whatever they feel, for what ever long they want, with any conditions they can think off.

Hruz

Matthew,

Hopefully as Serbia will sooner or later become an EU state, more people will have at least a faint clue what EU is about.

EU is a vast "internal market" with no boundaries for goods, people, services and capital.

Since lifting the customs would mean for Serbia entering a market of over 500 million, and enjoy the benefits of no customs, it must be a unanamous decision.

For exactly the same thing Greece is able to blackmail Skopje with its accession to EU, even one vote can block.

So be good students if Serbia want to join our club, and friendly with all 27 countries.

Looks like false promises coming home to roost if EU now renege and show Tadic's D yeS to all Serbia demands just means more and more conditions for nothing but further humiliation in return.

No doubt next we will hear the EU say recognise EULEX and drop ICJ case at the UN and we will give you another promised carrot but like Milan rightfully says just another stick and trick!!!
