That is not universal. Yes, many Eastern Europeans in the countryside drink more than the average American, though America never encountered such wars, communism and things that set Eastern European behind the West. Secondly, many Eastern Europeans don't drink as much as people make them out to drink, and live very long years as well (all my grandparents lived to over 80, and most Americans with their obesity wish they could look 10% of what my grandfathers do). Also, in most of the Southern United States you can find people that easily equal their poorer, lower class Eastern European counterparts.

Sergei

As I said, Shakashvili made an incredibly aggressive action and definitely deserved to pay for that, though I don't think the average Georgian who, in most cases, does not benefit from Shakashvili's pro-Western business, capitalist approach, deserves to. Why not have sent special forces to take down the government, rather than bomb Gori?

I sent you 2 comments. One is a link, the other one just something general about Americans staying active longer than Europeans. Did B92 resent something so innocent? You never know. Oh theses European sensibilities...

Hi Piotr !

"Why was it not enough to punish Georgia's army for what they did, why attack innocent Georgian people?"

I think that the next week if Srakashvili is removed all the Europeans will know the real details and you will not put me such strange questions because civillian losses on the Ossetian side are at least 100 times bigger. Just wait a few more days to be shocked by the "democracy" you have grown up by our side. By the way the Georgian massacre operation's official code was "CLEARED FIELD" and this is just what they have done to Ossetian capital and villages.

So we had no choice but to destroy their armed forces and make them all run to Tbilisi leaving the whole country defenceless ... It took about 60 hours after our regular army was engaged ... Saakashvili has mere chances to survive as a politician and as an object for inevitable prosecution. Trust me very soon he will teach students at his favorite Columbia University.

"furthermore there is no need for the Russians to get a foothold in the Balkans, since Serbia is there."

No you aren't. Nikolic didn't win, the smarter party is choosing the West and does not dare align with Russia when it's surrounded by NATO members.

Ataman,

I know that Hungarians, Russians and most Eastern-Europeans age faster due to high alcohol consumption and unhealthy habits. Because of that they are already considered old in their early sixties. Also they retire very early and what do the do? Drink, drink waiting for death. They can not understand that in the US a lot of people are still professionally active around 70 and that somebody is running for president at 71.
At your big desappointment I can tell you that John McCain is healthy, healtier than many East-Europeans at 55-60.
His mother herself is 94-95 years old. Longevity is in their genes.
John's mother vent to France last year and wanted to rent a car to visit the country. The French refused to rent due to her age. After that she bought a new car and visited all the regions she wanted. This is the "can do" American attitude!!!

All my sympathies for your wonderful country, Revaz - it is a sample, how bad/unfit leaders can make a hell out of a garden of Eden.

My family had so far the best personal experience with Georgians, I am really sorry to see all this happening.

While the fighting should stop immediately, I would like to see every guilty to answer before the court, what happened with these 2000 Ossetians. Also I want to see these adventurer American "advisors" in the same court or be put on the first airplane out of Tbilisi.

As for Saakashvili... many Ossetians and Georgians, sure have some question for him to answer. He is hopefully dead politically.

Ny sympathies to all victims on both sides.

Peter, I am also thinking, Russia is shooting itself in the foot with bombing being continued on Georgian territory, but there could be things we do not know yet. While I am disapproving that currently, I also say let's see what happens.

------------------------------------

To Joe:
I would like to see precisely, what Alexander Vesnyakov said and please in original, if possible. As for McCain... You have to be pretty naive to believe. McCain is a tough guy. He is playing that role because not much else is, what he can pull out right now. If we are unlucky, he would chose that huckabee-boy as VP, win the presidential race - and pass away. That means, we'll have mike huckabee as president and God should have mercy on America and the rest of the world if it happens. Look at his age and his health. :(

"Piotr you do know that nothing can save Georgia from the revenge for their atrocities so why should you mud yourself with strange statements of yours ? "

I agree with Russia's counter attack on Georgia's army and I also agree with them driving the Georgians out of South Ossetia, but how is bombarding civilians in cities outside of South Ossetia who have nothing to do with Shakashvilli's crazy ideas about Abkhazia and South Ossetia in any way better than what the Georgians did in Tshinkhvali?

Why was it not enough to punish Georgia's army for what they did, why attack innocent Georgian people?

short response to ahmed isufi who seems not to get it...

"First of all I 'll say to Russia to pick on someone its own size, and second; Russia will never have a foothold in Balkans. USA managed to get its foothold first and will neve let go. This is a nightmare for my Serbian neighbors, right.
(Ahmet Isufi, 11 August 2008 17:37"

first, there is no " overwhelming superiority" like Ahmed wants to present it here: on the russian side it´s only the 58th army, that means a tiny part of the russian armed forces that is operating in south ossetia. so much for "picking someone in its own size"...

Ahmed, please first think than write.

furthermore there is no need for the Russians to get a foothold in the Balkans, since Serbia is there.

and what is best in Ahmeds comment, it displays his fear about being let down.

that will happen sooner or later, and that´s good.

sorry, Ahmed, but your illusions will come to an end.

We also know how decisive the actual administration has been acting the last 8 years and where it brought the all world.
Unfortunately Georgia was cupid enough to believe in the complete failing US foreign policy and forgot who was sitting next to them!
Hopefully the american people will this time not be so blind to choose a president just because he has experience as a soldier and prisoner..., another useless lost war...

This is something we are ready to live with. But we couldn't afford acting like General Anders whose army travelled 6 years around the world ( USSR , IRAN, IRAQ , PALESTINE , EGYPT , ITALY ...) while Germans killed 1 million Poles annually ... So be ready for very bad (for you) news from Georgia.

Some possible reasons for Russia not to sign the peace treaty:

1. It involves a statement that secures Abkasia and ossetia under Georgian superiority, like 1244.

2. It involves "neutral" peacekeepers from NATO.

3. It involves the prosecution of war crimes, in a US led tribunal.

4. It involves full withdrawal of all Russian troops, also from Ossetia and Abkasia

5. It opens for US bases in Georgia in order to protect Georgia, and supervise peace.

6. the US never listens to Russia, so why should Russia listen to them? It's a principle.

"This situation is just one more mess on your double standard CV" The Swiss, #1

Obviously, George Dabya is not the only showing double standards.

Over the last months, I have witnessed dogmatic and sometimes emon\tional discussions about "self-determination" vs. "internationally recognised borders" both in the press and on this site.

To my surprise, there are people supporting Kosovo's UDI on one hand, and disagreeing with South Ossetia's independance on the other - and vice versa. Those are as double-standarded as the Commander-in-Chief himself.

If one chooses to recognise Kosovo, he should be sympathetic towards South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Pridnestrovya etc. as well.

In my opinion, US should in due time recocnise the UDI of the regions mentioned above in order not to loose all credibility.

The same goes for Mr. Putin as far as Kosovo's UDI is concerned.

This shows the mentality of the United States. When it's time to invade small defenseless countries like Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan... the United States rounds up coalitions.. when it's time to fight a country that the United States might give them a run for their money... Bush merely warns Russia that if they continue it would "strain relations with Washington". It is purely pathetic and really shows what the United States is made of. first, there is no " overwhelming superiority" like Ahmed wants to present it here: on the russian side it´s only the 58th army, that means a tiny part of the russian armed forces that is operating in south ossetia. so much for "picking someone in its own size"...

That is not universal. Yes, many Eastern Europeans in the countryside drink more than the average American, though America never encountered such wars, communism and things that set Eastern European behind the West. NATO wages a proxy war with Russia. It will be a dare mistake to push Georgia into an adventure of war with Russia. The aims of this war could be more or less be seen in the Joint Kushner/Sakashvili proposals-international mediation in the conflict. But this will not happen. And if you take the analogy with Kosovo then this is really disgusting.

The United States told Saakashvili to withdraw from his own territory because they do not want to ever fight bigger countries meet bigger countries like Russia and China on the battle field face to face.

That's right, rub the 'humanitarian bombers' noses in it. Bush, Solana and the gang are such hypocrites and criminals that it boggles the mind. Sending missiles into a city and killing 2,000 civilians is a war crime, and instead of criticizing their puppet Saakashvili, they criticize Russia.
The domino effect is starting already, just like Russia has said. Another foreign policy disaster for the US, and their weakness is showing since they can do zero about it. The US only likes to pick on small defenseless states.

Dear all !

Please note :

1. How helpless the US are against Russia ! Everything they can do is just watch how we are tearing apart theit closest ally ...

2. How the world mass media are changing their sights at the tragedy in United Ossetia. The first day they almost kept silent expecting instructions from Washington. Second day they all attacked Russia. Third day many German and English papers (THE TIMES ,DAILY TELEGRAPH ,DIER WELT ...) started to give real info of the Georgian fascism. But the biggest shock fot the western hipocrits is still in the future. I believe that one of these days Russia will organize a visit of western journalists to the region and thus nobody will be able to ignore the facts. Russia is not Serbia and the world in any case will hear our voice !

3. Under no conditions Ossetia and Abkhasia will not join Georgia whose survaival as a state depends only on good will of Russia alone. No Yank or Sarkozy but Putin and Medvedev can influence the issue. US and their puppet EU will bark from far away very helplessly.

4.This Russian blitz crieg should encourage our supporters in Serbia and make the Albanians think better of the choice they have made. We all know that it's not a war between Ossetians and Georgians but between Russia and the US. Same with the conflict between our brother Serbs and the Albanians ... Most of the world problems are one way or another imported from the USA.

Both of us know that we fight much better while your tongues are much longer. Both of us know that we have twice defeated you with no outside help and we are ready to do it again. The problem was that you attacked the asleep town with only women and children inside. Both of us know that 100% of Ossetian men were outside the town on the blockposts.

Very soon everybody will know how Georgians closed civillians in houses and set them on fire , how a tank followed and killed under the tracks an old woman with her two grandsons , how Georgian soldiers raped our girls , how they killed the wounded civillians and wounded paece makers , how they bombed the and fired at ambulances and running refugees , how they deliberately destroyed a hospital full of wounded people ,how after the "ceasefire" signed in the precence of the two FM during several hours Georgian GRAD systems , artillery and the remaining SU-25 bomber-fighter has attacked the already lost TSHINVAL ...

Peter:

Further, what Russia is now doing in Georgia proper comes nothing short of war crimes. Just as what Georgians have done in Tshkinvali.

this war is a catastrophe for all involved. And Russia should show the world a good example and pull back now!
