senator schumer claims that the american legal system is fair. So then he can't object to half of Kovacevic's jury being americans of Serbian descent. Kovacevic should be returned to the us to stand trial under the following conditions:
1) The trial is held in Chicago. The place can be changed under the american system.
2) Six of the 12 person jury are american citizens of full Serbian descent: 2 american-born, 3 immigrants and 1 Serbian priest.
3) No plea bargaining.
4) The entire trial is televised to Serbia to prove that the american system is "fair".
5) These same conditions apply to all re-trials if they occur.

Kovačević and Serbia are the ones making this such a big deal. HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER FLED! He would have gotten probation, maybe a couple of months in jail if his record was clear, and probably sent back to Serbia with no chance of coming back. No he is on the world's most wanted. Smart move?

Many countries don't have extradition treaties so should they all be under sanctions now?
When America signs an extradition treaty with Serbia and complies with it then they can ask for this guy. First send Wesley and Madeline to face trials in Serbia for their part in murder of thousands and then you can have one given to you.

First the treaty and then the extraditions.

The US stance is completely political (anti-Serbian). The US politicians never pushed Isreal like this for the return of Samuel Sheinbein after he murdered, butchered, and hid his classmate in his garage. And I do think Kovacevic should stand trial, but Serbia has a non-extradition policy like most countries so he should be tried in Serbia. It is a shame this case is treated differently by US politicians just because we love Isreal and love to hate the Serbs.

another Serbian hero, who proves, how evil the US are for one side.

another reason to spread anti-serbian prejudices for the other side.

from outside everybody must ask: how mature are both of you? who should take you serious?

Good. Serbia does whatever they want, and US responds.
1. No $50 Million aid yearly (Russia gave Serbs $1.7 million and they were dancing from joy)

2. No visas for any Serb

3. Veto any international loans or aid to Serbia

If Serbia wants to play hardball, US wins. Serbian embassy snuck him illegally out of the US, they should bring him back.

Why stop there 'Joe'. Might as well send in the US army, navy & air force to make sure this 'arch-villain' faces US 'justice'.

Get a grip some of you - is a simple case of assault with possibly some corruption thrown in.

The real criminals here are people like Schumer & his like who seem to think it's 'ok' to place sanctions on an entire country merely to further their own political careers.

At a time when the US government is murdering prisoners, in direct contravention of International Court of Justice orders, they don't have much ground here. Were the US government requested by Serbia - or just about any other nation - to extradite an American college student to face similar charges. they would just ignore the request just as blithely as they ever ignore the standards of international law.

It's OK if Americans kill foreigners.

In 1998 US pilots trying to show how manly they were tried to fly their military aircraft under the cables supporting a gondola of an aerial tramway,in Italy. In their stupidity, they clipped and cut the cable causing 20 Europeans in the gondola to fall 100 meters to their deaths.

And of course American military lawyers and judges let the pilots get away with murder with a not guilty verdict.

Srboslav, if you update your information base you will find that the Supreme Court has determined it illegal to execute minors or the mentally retarded.
And does Serbia have a warrant out for the Nazi war crimes, the last I heard the US was trying to revoke his citizenship so I really don't think extradition would be a problem so go for your indictment.

American_in_Serbia "Somebody in here mentioned....." So if it is anti-American it must be true?

I can't understand why people politisize the issue and make a hero out of an individual accused of assault with fatal outcomes. He commited the act in the US soil, hence he should face Justice there. If he didn't like the place, and thinks that its not free and fair, why did he try so hard to get the US visa? He should of thought twise before assaulting a guy in his home country. Also to blame is the Counsil in NY that faciliated an illegal act and smuggle him out of US via a forgerd travel document. Would be radicilous to think that the American justice system is not equally fair to all. With respect to the nazi suspect-criminal case, procedures are being undertaken to be extradited. So people, stop politizising everything you read. Express your hate in a justifiable matter, and don't compare oranges with apples.

All the US is asking is to have him face trial. The reason it is a big deal is it is the Serbian govt that enabled him to flee.
Those who claim he cannot get a fair trial because of anti-serbian sentiment are just blowing in the wind. The fact that he fled the country would not be admissible at trial.
To those that say let him stand trial in Serbia, is the Serbian govt willing to pay to fly the bar full of witnesses to Serbia for a trial, or would it just be better to say oh he is Serbian "not guilty".

Joe

The time for the State Department to use strong words s/b over. It is time to use sanctions as suggested by Schumer. Serbs always had their cocky attitude and usually never took strong words seriously.

The court should decide whether Miladin was guilty or not. But Consul's act is shameful and should be punished. It is another diplomatic scandal.

What part of NO doesn't the Bush's administration understand? Serbian law doesn't allow the extradition of it's citizens, period. There are no exceptions and there are no exceptional cases either. What the Bush's administration can do however is CRY ME A RIVER. Somebody mentioned here about a US citizen who commited a crime in Romania and fled home, he's still at large there.

Srboslav

pre 15 godina

Yes it is very serious, therefore its also very important that he will stand trial, in Serbia.

If he is guilty, sentence him to some appropriate punishment considering his age, not execution of mentally retarded and underage as in the US.

He is already judged in advance if he will return to the US, he will get a fair trial in Serbia.

Serbia should by the way demand that the Nazi war criminal found in the US be extradited to Serbia in the same way...

Crimes?
Soon, it will be discovered that Miladin has actually cooperated secretly with Mladic and Karadzic, and has created secret death camps in America - because he hates democracy and freedom. He also killed around 2 billion American people - in his secret camps of death.

If Albanians were not so blinded by their love and admiration of Americans, maybe they could request from US government to extradite the US soldier who raped and murdered 4 year old Albanian girl in Kosovo.

Maybe...but then again maybe they forgave him for being American...who knows these days.
