Ilir:
Doubt you can speak for the 'other 97%' of the population - as the other serb 3% south of the Ibar would certainly not agree with you, let alone the other minorities.

Also seems that you & others above are operating under a certain basic mis-apprehension when it comes to comparing the serb dominated area north of the Ibar, with the Presevo valley which has an albanian majority.

In the case of the serbs, they are citizens of Serbia & have never renounced their citizenship & rightly reject any other parties decision to do so on their behalf.

In the case of the people of albanian ethnicity living in the Presevo valley, by birth or by nationisation, they either are or agreed to become citizens of Serbia.

The latter case would be a case for secession & the former is a case of resistance to secession.

Which makes them very different cases indeed.

@Giorgio
i stick to my point his nominee is a little gift to the Serbian governament...anyway i think that the "soft-landing" between Unimk and Eulex is a dream..
If Eu countries want something in that area they must convince themself that they need to act the "hard way"...
my opinion obviously...

All of UNMIK are persona non grata in Kosovo. Show me one Albanian that thinks UNMIK should still stay there.
(Funcakes, 5 August 2008 20:51)

I guess you forgot 1999 Funcakes when a million people were chased out of Kosovo because of the war and the people were crying for help and the UN came to the rescue. Let's fast forward to the present now since the UN has assisted Kosovo in breaking away from Serbia now you say no one wants UNMIK anymore and i guess the same will be for EULEX if it ever. I guess the world is seeing the real deal, Carla Del Ponte was a heroine at one time but when she started to investigate issues that were not in the best interest of Kosovo she quickly was "Thrown under the Bus". I advise the people of Kosovo to think carefully about making demands. Donors can become very nervous about investments when there are threats made. How do you we know that after making these investments that the goverment decides to Nationalize the projects? Then what will Kosovo do? Just food for thougth.

1) "his remarks were misinterpreted"
my guess is that in the future a lot of Lambertone's remarks will be "misinterpreted".

2) "Zannier is a man of Prodi...he is a leftist and his career inside UN is due to his political friends"
(Luigi, 5 August 2008 16:41)

Luigi, come on, Lambertone previously worked for NATO, OSCE, EU and of course Italian Foreign Ministry, but never had a career inside UN. Moreover, Italy already presented in the past a cadidate for UNSRSG in Kosovo ... with Lambertone the times were just more ... how to say ... mature. I don't expect he will quit too soon, his job is to get Kosovars used to pragmaticy.

"North Kosovo is just a step in the direction of All of Kosovo."

Serbia will never rule all of Kosovo again. At least not for a hundred years. And there are two reasons for that:

1. Obviously, the Albanian majority aren't interested.

2. Kosovo is an economic **hole. It is simply not in Serbia's interest to have albanian populated parts of Kosovo on her territory, or to have the economy of Kosovo as her concern.

Of course, Serbia will be very interested in having the opportunity to care, and provide, for Serbs in Kosovo and Serbian churches and monasteries. This implies that whoever is in charge in Kosovo, has to be accountable to Belgrade (or Brussel with Serbia as an EU member) on these issues.

And that's where we are heading, except that Northern Kosovo will most likely break off and rejoin Serbia.

To me, that looks like a nice bargain for Serbia. Perhaps better than the Tadic-plan.

This Priština daily should have said that the UNMIK chief has been warned not to continue making statements that do not reflect the Albanian interpretation of reality in Kosovo.

They somehow think they control the north. Don't know how they can rationalize this, but if delusional thoughts are some people's Midnight Basketball in Pristina, then whatever gets them through the day is what it takes.

All Pristina is doing is showing their incapability of being cooperative. Continued pressures to control the north, or any Serb enclave, is little more than warmongering in my eyes. Plus, the whole "give us Presevo for Mitrovica" argument is ridiculous. Serbia controls both. Pristina controls neither.

I guess this is another "reality" that certain people in positions of power can't bring themselves to see.

About time the Albanian’s stand up to the foreign autocrats.
They seem to be more concern to the 3% of the population than the others 97%.
I think is mad to even considering the Serb minority to have their own police. What about the other minorities? Why can’t the gypsies and the Turks have their own police in Kosovo? Why can’t the Albanian’s who live in Serbia have their own police?
This guy goes on about the Serb’s and their right but fail to see the right of the majority.
The Serb’s in north don’t pay taxes, claiming benefits from Kosovo government and the EU. The northern part is heaven for people smuggling, drugs, guns, prostitution and cigarettes. No one is controlling anything since the criminal’s burn and destroyed the border control.
Mr. Zanieri does not like to comment about this because he does not wish to upset the minorities. There are thousand of Serb in other part of Kosovo who live peacefully and respect law and they making an honest living. What about them?
I don’t understand, if they do not like to live in Kosovo under the rule of the majority they are free to go to another country. End of story.
I’m sick and tired listen in the Serb’s moaning and playing the victim all the time.
Kosovo is an independent country and is about time to start acting like one.

Delije

I can see how Pristina is starting to turn on their masters in this "supervised independence" because that's what it is people supervised. Pristina has no say in anything without their masters approval. Not true independence but supervised. Pristina is slowly changeing their tune to their agreement with their masters. Kinda like what they did with the Turks after the Turks colonised Kosovo with Albanians. Kinda how Tito did the same and they turned on him too. History repeats it's self and Kosovo will be souly controled by Serbia once again. North Kosovo is just a step in the direction of All of Kosovo.

- Since neither K. Albanians nor Serbs seems very interested in fulfilling the current Kosovan Constitution, I suppose you are correct.

I think the only way Thaci & co can avoid separation is to follow the Constitution by the word. Which they obviously don't want to do on this matter.

But I still think Zannier is doing what he can to follow the constitution and avoid a split.

I agree with TS that Zannier is doing all that he can, but he is operating under the UN Res 1244 which specifically states that Kosovo legally remains a province of Serbia.

How pathetic can a government possibly be?

Zannier is doing all he can to support Kosovo's independence. These kinds of compromises are necessary to stabilize Kosovo, and an integral part of what is called "supervised independence" and "minority rights" - both principles that are fundamentals of Kosovo's constitution.

However, I suppose that the government of Kosovo try to evade accountability for another disaster: The miserable failure to build an economy. Kosovo is getting poorer, and remittances from aborad are drying up with the global credit slump. That means increased misery for K. albanians, hence Thaci and co needs someone to blame, and this time they can't blame the Serbs. So who's then to blame? Zannier.

Oe should, of course, blame the corrupt Mafiosos that rule in Kosovo, but hey, they're freedom heroes, right? Can't blame them then, can we?

So let's all blame Zannier instead!

Thaci and Kuci will say "No" to everything that Zannier proposes with regard to Serbia and Kosovo Serbs (Couts and Police). Next you will see Customs being debated hotly and Zannier being criticized heavily by Thaci's boys. They are doing this with the blessing of US and EU, who do not want to reopen any issues with Serbia (they may make concessions on Orthodox sites). But it will be a big no to police, customs and courts under UNMIK authority. UN is trying a major change of focus to give a way out for Kosovo Albanians to co-opt Kosovo Serbs, but US and EU says "nyet" to any concessions to the Serbs. What will UN and Zanny boy do next? Who can they blame? This is a game that will go on for a while in different forms. Poor us who have to read and comment on all this stuff coming out of Pristina!!

And what is the reality in Kosovo??

The reality is that Kosovo is partitioned and that the chanses that north of Ibar and the enclaves will be ruled by albanians is about the same as Pristina being ruled from Belgrade.

Serbia should hire the Israeli firm that constructs the wall around the west bank and let them build a copy around the albanian parts of Kosovo.

@Giorgio
i stick to my point his nominee is a little gift to the Serbian governament...anyway i think that the "soft-landing" between Unimk and Eulex is a dream..
If Eu countries want something in that area they must convince themself that they need to act the "hard way"...
my opinion obviously...
