"Senator Schumer why wait until September to cut off this aid? It doesn't make any sense. Do it ASAP.
There are so many small countries, who would appreciate even this small amount and would deserve it so much more. Why give even a penny to people, who are as anti-Americans as Iranians or Russians? Why are we playing Mother Theresa with people, who don't deserve it?
(Joe, 5 August 2008 15:10)"

Isn't it amazing that the US considers itself to be a sugar daddy to ohers with such a PALTRY amount?

And to be sugar daddy to foreigners at a time when your own people and banks are reeling and reeling from your mortgage crisis. Spend on these jobless and homeless Americans, and you might just reap dividends in youe coming election for goodness sake!

The dog who barks does not bite, at least it is a proverb in Serbian. I hope it is similar with american dogs. This senator knows that both extradiciton and cutting of aid is impossible. THat is why he is so temperate. He is a looser.

Which other country in the world gets punished as a whole when one of its citizens is accused of a crime abroad? Senator Shumer has the concept of collective guilt firmly in his head - just like the Nazis had!

@#16: Olf, I'm not in favour of criminals going unpunished, whether they be Romanian, Albanian, Serbian, American or from Scandinavia. Read again my message: it's merely pointing out the american double standards on the issue. It looks like preventing extradition is now international policy, however don't forget it's by example from Uncle Sam. As if it was a show of strength...

As for the alleged aid: it's probably Gates' or Murdoch's weekend money.

Sorry, no change in my message.

Serbs once again try to escape from the justice.
The serbs here joke about the 50 million dollars but are forgetting that America has given much more to Serbia and America can do much more sanctions to Serbia than 50 mln dollars.

Mike

pre 15 godina

$50 million in aid? That's little more than pocket change these days. Serbia can manage rather well without it.

Schumer is also an avowed Clinton crony and like his carpetbagging fellow Senator, he's taking this well out of proportion. In fact, like most things in the Balkans, this doesn't make any headlines here.

I also find it interesting that the US tends to defend its own citizens whenever they make asses of themselves around the world: the incident in Romania notwithstanding, now many Japanese people have either been run over or sexually assaulted by drunken American soldiers in Okinawa? How many Iraqis have been beaten, incarcerated, or sexually assaulted by our troops? How many Afghan weddings have we bombed? How is the American image portrayed around the world? We're certainly not the moral liberators our governments wants us to believe.

Olf raises an interesting point about image. Well, unfortunately, that image of Serbia in the US can't get any more tarnished than it is now. We still think they're a bunch of savages, and I suspect that stereotype helped in getting Sen. Schumer all worked up over this.

I don't condone the action. I think none of us here do. You want to extradite him to face criminal charges? Fine. You want to put an international arrest warrant out on him? Go ahead. But when this becomes a political issue, you turn the guy into a hero. If that money is withheld, I have no doubt we'll waste it on something else.

Amer

pre 15 godina

$50 million may not be a lot of pressure, but this is for one program (upgrading the police force) - there are other programs (humanitarian aid, democracy building) that are generally not affected by conditions imposed by the government. But the influence that can be wielded by two powerful senators should not be underestimated. There are also World Bank funds that the Americans could vote (and lobby) against. And then there are the three Serb students who are planning to attend West Point this fall... Schumer has given government agencies a month to come up with additional pressure points.

It would be much better for his government persuade the young man to return and go to trial. He does not have to prove his innocence, he (or rather, his lawyer) merely has to demonstrate that the prosecutor cannot prove his guilt and he goes free. Where the only witnesses are the undoubtedly drunk patrons of a bar (at 2 a.m., was it?) he might have a good chance of plea-bargaining down to a lesser charge: it may not be as bad as he thinks.

So, how could the Serbian government persuade him to go back, if they don't want to pass a special law to cover the case of where a citizen has returned to and thus is in Serbia illegally? Well, his parents must be liable under Serb law for persuading that unfortunate consular official to provide their son - illegally - with a temporary passport. Don't they face jail-time themselves? All things considered, it would be better for the kid to obtain a good American lawyer and present himself to the judge.

I think the Serbian government should encourage Schumer to try the case in Serbia. If kovacevic is guilty, I suppose they have some evidence to bring up?

Remember that many european countries refuse to extradict people to the US, because US prisons do not reach up to even the most elementary human rights standards.

So invite Schumer and enybody else to come to Serbia and present evidence, and Kovacevic will be tried before a Serbian court.

I have no idea where the bail came from. It could be directly from his parents, or it could be money they borrowed somewhere. In any case, the money is lost if he doesn't show up (maybe they are already lost due to his no-show?).

Let us hope that his parents/family did not have to borrow the money from some shady loan-shark that will have no qualms about sending a person to Serbia to recollect the money by force.

Arrogant. Italy is still waiting for the american Marine that killed the italian agent 6 or 7 years ago!
here's the little story: Nicola Calipari, liberated (in undisclosed circumstances) Giuliana Sgrena, italian journalist from her captors. On the way back to Baghdad International Airport, the Toyota Corolla they were travelling in came under fire, in disputed conditions, by US soldiers that had set up a blocking position to protect the convoy transporting the US ambassador, John Negroponte.

According to the reconstruction Calipari threw himself on her, and shortly after died (shot in his temple). A Coalition report later identified the solider who shot Calipari as New York State National Guardsman Mario Lozano, a member of the 1st Battalion of the 69th Infantry Regiment (of the Third Infantry Division). This Lozano is wanted in Italy but US refuses to extradate him. So were is the boundary I wonder? Americans, arrogant

“We won’t rest until Kovačević returns to the U.S. to face justice,“ said Schumer.

Well ... In december 2004, Teo Peter, the bassist of a famous romanian rock band, was killed (while being in a taxi) in a car accident caused by a drunk driving US marine attached with the US Embassy in Bucharest. That marine was in the same night put on an airplane by the Embassy staff and left Romania without being faced with the prosecutor and having his blood tested for alcohol (something that no diplomatic personnel can escape from). In a mockery of a trial in US, he was aquitted and got away with a light warning (warning was issued for misconduct because he was coming from an intimate rendez vous with some other married woman than his wife). The reason for aquittal was the fact that the prosecutor could not proove that actually Teo Peter (the victim) was phisically in the crashed taxi. Of course the prosecutor did not bother to ask for any evidence or testimony from the investigating authorities in Bucharest.
So, not that I want to excuse in any way the horrible actions of this guy, but Mr Schumer, US JUSTICE system works ... only for americans.

Oh dear lord, please take your petty cash, and ALL your cronies, trolls and other slugish like creatures with you out of Serbia. And never come back. Please.

Reading the comments posted so far I can not help but feel that a lot of people actually condone the actions of a thug.

Forget for a moment where Miladin Kovacevic is from and think whether he deserves to be punished for what he has done to his classmate? It is disgusting really.

Had he done this to a classmate in Serbia, would you condone his actions? Or are you actually doing this only because the victim is non-Serb?

Serbs once again try to escape from the justice.
The serbs here joke about the 50 million dollars but are forgetting that America has given much more to Serbia and America can do much more sanctions to Serbia than 50 mln dollars.

Amer

pre 15 godina

Yea, if cutting off aid does not work, why not bomb Belgrade once again citing humanitarian intervention. Trying to secure justice for his constituents, Sen. Schumer is acting like Bush. Let the judicial authorities who are working on a deal finish their work before you can turn up the heat on Serbia, Sen. Schumer. Why is that it is so easy for the US to threaten a country? Those days of arm-twisting are over. Can't believe Schumer and Hillary Clinton are wasting their time with this stuff, in stead of trying to capture the White House from the Republicans. Democrats are so self-righteous, always champions of small people, but not really doing anything to help them. Good luck to all of us!

Best if they both cut off and ... off with their microscopic aid ! They have more debts than the rest of the world and shall wait and see who's gonna be bancrupted first Serbia or it's main rival. The lower Serbia bows the easier it is kicked by it's destroyers. The whole Serbia is a morally prisoner of war with an occupation regime inside. Hopefully it won't last long.

Well, let uncle Sam cutt off this 50 mn chuck of change, there's more here in Europe. Bush's governement needs to know that Serbia will implement it's laws and constitution (no extradition of Serbian citizens) just like they will implement it back home. There's no double standard, there shouldn't be. Serbia's future is with Europe not across the Atlantic. Good luck Senator Schumer, Serbia doesn't need that chunck of change, trust me! There's a lot more of it in Europe, and NO, Serbian constitution can't and will NOT be bend for you.

Wait, am I reading this correctly? That Senitor Whateverhisnameis wants to cut off US AID of $50 mil to Serbia?
Am I reading the number right? $50 milion!? That is barely £25 mn - I work with clients with businesses of a yearly turnover twice as that.

Oh dear lord, please take your petty cash, and ALL your cronies, trolls and other slugish like creatures with you out of Serbia. And never come back. Please.

This is just too insulting - aid of £25 milion is frankly appaling. And then to threaten to cut it, is even more cringe worthy!

Better take that change and deal with your ressesion - Serbia is doing just FINE without spare change.

Wow, now Serbian economy will just crush down without those 50 mn dollars. I always get excited when the “mighty” USA demonstrates force and threats against small countries such as Serbia. Mr Schumer, why don’t you consider some bombs, after all the USA is so good at while spreading democracy and teaching others lessons on democracy.

Some young guy escaped from Serbia to Russia, not to face a criminal charge by Serbian justice, and he's not extradited TO Serbia. Now another one flees from the USA to escape a trial before an US court, and he's not extradited FROM Serbia...

And the parents were able to pay the 'lousy' amount of $100.000 for bail.. Buying justice?

But still no need to make a state affair out of it!

adrian/bucharest

pre 15 godina

Felix, Romania

pre 15 godina

1. Again american double standards: in 2004, a drunk marine driving mad in Bucharest has killed Teo Peter, bass player for the rock group Compact. The killer, van Goethem has fled the country and today is at large in the US:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teo_Peter

2. What aid? "Unpaid compensations" sounds more realistic.

Oh please Chuck, please cut off aid!! That 50 million NGO's, people like Natasa Kandic, Sonja Biserko, and all other 'democrats' whom your government is paying. So please, cut off aid, it will only help Serbia. It's not like your aid is actually meant to help Serbia anyways, it's meant to futher your colonial interests in the region.
And while you're at it, we would like the $100 Billion you owe us for your illegal and criminal bombing of Serbian infrastructure for 78 days.

TS

I think the Serbian government should encourage Schumer to try the case in Serbia. If kovacevic is guilty, I suppose they have some evidence to bring up?

Remember that many european countries refuse to extradict people to the US, because US prisons do not reach up to even the most elementary human rights standards.

So invite Schumer and enybody else to come to Serbia and present evidence, and Kovacevic will be tried before a Serbian court.

I agree with most of the writers. Double standards, yes, it looks like that. But what probably all forgot is the fact that the guy's passport was taken and he was given somehow a travledocument from the consul/embassador. (With a fake name on it???) That's the real problem. A diplomat involved! And by the way, his parenst are so rich that they can also run away with leaving that money behind? yes, then I know what kind of people we have to deal with. I don't say if it is correct or not, don't know much about it but sure it is a strange case!!

Anyway it is all about perpetuating making enemy of Serbia in the face of ordinary US citizens and for the purpose of US foreign policy agendas. charles schumer is probably the most important person in the universe. Also, he is well-lobbied by Albanians. With $53 mn or without, the issue is over.

Let's hope K(k)ovacevic get a fair trial in Belgrade. He is not a hero, but charles schumer is not Mother Theresa. I am curious, what was her opinion about bush, who set the record of executions during his years as governor of Texas.

Until there is no trial, not shure does K(k)ovacevic deserve his name beginning with capital letter or not.

pre 15 godina

@#16: Olf, I'm not in favour of criminals going unpunished, whether they be Romanian, Albanian, Serbian, American or from Scandinavia. As for the alleged aid: it's probably Gates' or Murdoch's weekend money.
