Turning old enemies into new allies is a diplomatic triumph. The road from being an ojbect of NATO bombardment into a NATO mamber will be a long one for Serbia. It will be a costly one too. Purchasing aircrafts and armament, later sending Serbian soldjers to misions. But it will pay off at the end. Freeing young Serbs from conscription, reconciliation with neighbours , ending the visa regime (yes things are connected!),etc. Bon voyage Serbia!

oF COURSE nato WOULD LIKE A SERVILE SERBIA TO JOIN SOON-the british contingent of the american empire has run out of troopers and they are even spreading thier recruitment drive to nations of the commonwealth-in particular Jamaica where they are having some luck rounding up people to join in thier crusade in Afghansitan. Of course the west wont use serbs in afghanistan or iraq. But one day I will not be surprisede if serbs are sent to other hot spots where they would be both a military and propoganda tool. Maybe well see tadic serb janisaries in Georgia fighting the ossetians and thier russian allies-------

you don't get to be EU members by allying with Russian military. NATO/EU are merging ever closer, as America hopes Europeans will fund their own defence. It's part of the EU package.

Dashnori i Satam,

"let me rain on your parade: Your 60 year old tanks are useless anyway. Dozens of run of the mill shoulder fired missiles can destroy them if you even bother to bring them in battle."

So?, in WWII we beat 250,000 Germans (a technological powerfouse) and Albanians with hunting rifles. What's your point? All you need for balkan style warfare is a lot of heart and a few rounds. Serbs have it in spades thankyou very much!

"Thanks to Russian training, serbian defences against the NATO-aggression actually won the KosovO battle. All tanks safe and a "invisible" bomber shot down, this is a real army."

The plane was shot by chance, just firing missiles in the air hot one plane and the pilot was saved. If you were that good, dozens of planes would have been shot. Don't forget, they flew some 30,000 sorties over 78 days.

Serbia's best bet, and only choice, is to be friendly now. Enough with threats, even Albania joins NATO next year and Croatia has a modern army.

Has Serbia decided in which American manufactured war that they will join also Iraq or Afghanistan. To be a servant of NATO German,British, French and American world policy. What next will NATO ask of Serbia to apologize to NATO for the bombing of Serbia and pay compensation for the bombs they used. To test Serbia's daftness and loyalty to them also to their new world order.

"Serbia will seek to purchase modern aircraft, "in line with the country's economic capability"."

Oh, no. Not in line with economic capability. We were hoping that aircrafts would be able to fly.

The final nail in the "erase whatever you are and welcome into the Borg collective, resistance is futile" coffin.

Thanks to Russian training, serbian defences against the NATO-aggression actually won the KosovO battle. All tanks safe and a "invisible" bomber shot down, this is a real army.

I find it almost comical, but truly very sad that the Serbian government is boasting about their national air force and defense system, when in reality, Tadic and Company are giving away our sovereignty- so why do the Serbs need an air force, or any military? We don't need a military simply for "show" purposes, or to make us believe that we can really defend ourselves. Serbia today faces the greatest threat to our nationhood, being "sold" and told what to do by Brussels and Washington. Why build up (or even have a military) simply to be under the eventual command of NATO. The military is a country's show of independence, muscle and determination- something that Tadic and Company have knowingly taken away from the Serbs.

Continuing from my previous posting.

Serbia's biggest security issues have nothing to do with airplanes, but Serbia has no experience how to deal with people like Austrian businessman Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly who allegedly received $8 million to lobby the Hungarian government on behalf of SAAB.

So far, the Grippen corruption probe was started in two countries: Czech Republic and Hungary. A third new NATO country (Bulgaria) who became a SAAB customer is know for extended corruption.

They pulled this airplane issue simply out of nothing. Now we sudden hear, Serbia needs new airplanes. Why not SU-37, for instance?

I wonder, how much is going to be passed under the table in that NATO "deal" and how much already passed. Nothing wrong (technically) with the "western" aircraft, it is excellent, just this kind of thing stinks to skies of corruption.

Does it mean that Serbia will enter into relationships with the "NATO state"? :)
(Alban, 3 August 2008 11:53)

"Alban", if you live in Albania or outside of Serbia (incl. Kosovo) that is of zero relevance for you. Otherwise it probably means: "someone is trying to get his hand into your pocket and take the wallet".

"Security agreement" is indeed a vague thing. Indeed, many countries like Israel, Kuwait and Montenegro have it. Even... would you think? Russia, too:

http://www.nato.int/docu/basictxt/fndact-a.htm

But watch out for this sentence:

"He added this was "not enough", and explained that Serbia will seek to purchase modern aircraft, "in line with the country's economic capability". "

I would like to know what does this security agreement with NATO exactly means. I would like to know the content of that agreement. I sense every kind of agreement with NATO very stinky.

Šutanovac also stressed the military budget will be "insignificantly higher that before", but that it will be "better spread".

-Hope it will not spread in private pockets of some state officials, including Sutanovac.

I do find it quite amazing that all of the countries in the world have signed this agreement except Serbia. What a load of baloney.

More deliberate mistruths by Serbian politicians that the Serbian media is prepared to report faithfully. There is no "security agreement" that "ALL countries in the world" have signed.

Moreover, Serbian military personel are already being educated abroad. And there would be even more of them if Serbia made tha cash available - without or without this signing.

This is just more political rhetoric with little substance and deliberate mistruths cleverly placed in the hands of the media knowing full well that it will be relayed directly to the public. Well done RTS and B92!
