Montenegro's place is in EU no doubt about that. As soon as Croatia enters Montenegro's door will be wide open, the rest of Balkans has to wait until the dust settles. Pro-western is a way to go they see it clearly, maybe that can help further Serbia to keep in the right track!!! As far as Kosovo's recognition its imminent no way around it, they wouldn't accept their passports if they thought its not a real country. Good luck and Godspeed...

Ataman,

That might be a possibility, but strangely enough Las Vegas, Reno and Amsterdam remain very popular destinations for a wide variety of people.

Its worth considering as it would address a number of issues, such as how to set Montenegro apart from others in the region and what to do with Organized Crime.

The traditional approach is to try to crush organized crime, but why not reform them instead? The mafia did a wonderful job in making Las Vegas and Reno into major tourist destinations and turned many former criminals into legitimate businessmen.

For hundreds of years, the entire economy and society was based around banditry and goat stealing. Why not capitalize on that tradition?

I personally don’t see an effective way of dealing with the organized crime problem there unless you give them a stake in a mainstream business.

Something like 70% of the cars on the road there were stolen from other EU countries. How do you seriously address Organized Crime when it has such wide spread grassroots support? Throw 70% of the country in jail? Or give them a healthy alternative?

It’s a brilliant idea on so many levels.

Montenegro is small enough to allow for major social experimentation. By joining the EU they will lose many opportunities they might otherwise have.

Joining the EU might prove far easier than leaving it. We Montenegrins are freedom loving folks. What’s the point of leaving one union merely to join another with all the same players and then some.

Gambling, prostitution and marijuana should be the focus of their tourism. Bring the black market into the main stream.

Not sure, it will work. Traditional vacationeers could be scared and rather travel to other places like Turkey. Instead of Filani/Ivanov/Janković families you will get all the yucky problems "EXIT" festival has and plus extra "some".

What does Montenegro have to gain by joining the EU?

Its economy is based on tourism. They don’t need imports and exports. Russia is already investing tons of money. Montenegro can not compete in the level of service with places like Croatia or Italy, the population simply does not understand how the service industry works, we have a very different culture and attitude. Our only chance at economic prosperity is to be a budget tourist destination, not compete in levels of luxury.

We should adopt a Monte Carlo/Las Vegas/Amsterdam type tourism and stay away from EU regulations. Joining the EU will only make it easier for the best and brightest to leave, and we only have a small population, we can not afford to lose anyone.

Montenegro is a lawless country and that’s part of its appeal.

Organized crime there is so integrated with society, that they only way to make it a truly functioning economy is to make the criminals into legitimate businessmen. Arresting them, or taking them out of the economy would eliminate some of the best minds of Montenegro.

Gambling, prostitution and marijuana should be the focus of their tourism. Bring the black market into the main stream.

As far as Kosovo goes.

I can only add…

What would Njegos say?

The answer is obvious.

Good luck getting SAA signatures Montenegro, I'm sure some Albanian allies will be thrilled to sign your membership papers even if you don't recognize Kosovo.

We live in a funny and paradoxal world. Kosova has to ask recognition by two smaller republics Montenegro and Macedonia (1/3 of its population ethnic Albanians.
With due respect for the government of both republics Kosova recognition is inevitable if you think rationally and pragmatically.
