Coming from a high-level official, the comments made at the end of this column are outrageous, at the very least. I am delighted that Karadzic is finally going to the Hague. However, he is going there to face trial. Whether or not he'll be found guilty and get a "massive sentence" as you say, as we all certainly wish, is entirely up to the Tribunal. Not to you, Sir.

@ vladimir gagic:
Although I really believe that you are right in that neocons have more blood on their hands then Karadzic, does that matter for the arrest of the latter? If American criminals are getting away with their crimes, does that than mean that all criminals should get away with their crimes?
What kind of rhetoric?

I don't think that if Americans get away with their worldwide mass murder campains, others should get away with it as well.

Secondly I'm very happy with this arrest because it might uncover some of the very nasty games and tricks the US have played in the Balkans. This Karadzic knows a lot about things the neocons would like to keep buried.

And for the US not being punished, don't worry. Most likely it will never stand for an international court. Neither do I believe that the US will ever prosecute their own corporate/political criminals (neocons) as they should. Still, with their conduct the US has made itself so much hated (and trust me, really not only in Serbia, also here in Holland and all around the globe) that they will get their punishment on the long run. It's just a matter of time before they lose their economic dominance. Rather soon than late if you ask me. After that the US will very rapidly lose most of its support, because a lot of it is currently based on economic extortion. Without international support the US isn't worth much and they will plunge into chaos. Most likely even civil war will follow for them. And without support they will be in that situation for a long time. The individual criminals in the US will most likely never be punished*, but for that the whole nation will pay a huge price on the long run. But I guess that's also what they deserve for their arrogant and and failure of prosecuting their own criminals. Disagree?

Every criminal, no matter patty or war, should get its day in court to face responsibilities for their crimes. And so goes for Karadzic.

Richard Holbrook said it all in his comment about capture of R.K. He said that he will not be coming out of Hauge.
What do you think he means by that?
He has already predetermined his guilt and sentence.

Looks like Serbs are already judged and sentenced even before they step foot in Hague.

Charles,

The last word in your article says it all with respect to your bias: "Good." You have made yourself judge and executioner before Radovan has even set foot in the court! This type of western bias is well know to discerning Serbs who understand that you care little about actual war-criminals or ultimate truth and reconciliation in the Balkans, but rather you represent economic/imperialist ambitions which at the outset of the war painted one side "bad" and the other "good" so that your goals could be more easily achieved.

Either that or you have fallen for the lies of your fellow journalists. Journalists that are still so careless that they still perpetuate lies such "hundreds of thousands" dead, whereas the truth is that close to 100K died ON ALL SIDES!

I think you are a little presumptuous as well trying to "meet" with R.K. Heck, I even wanted to "interview" R.K. but the fact is that he had better things to do with his time and had bigger fish to fry than you!

You seem to have written this just to imply that if you'd had a chat with the man, In Serbian, in 1997 that would have been the end of it. Like most wealthy expatriates, whether or not you can order a pint in Serbian, you don't get it. You quite sound like you've never set foot in the country at all.

I edited and put my comment here because I noticed that comments to these "western" blogs last longer on this website:

Do you people (B92 & Tadic's government) actually expect us to believe that the leader of the Bosnian Serbs was working as a humble doctor of alternative medicine and taking the bus to work? HAHAHAHAHA. This is absurd. This poor man is not the real Radovan Karadzic. I have been staring at the photographs and just can't see the exact resemblance. The scar over his left eye doesn't match exactly. I can give several reasons why this is an elaborate hoax.

1) The EU is desparate. They need to get Serbia into the EU as quickly as possible if they have any chance of achieving an independent "Kosova". But to save face, the "war criminals" must be caught.

2) Tadic and the DS are desparate. If they don't show progress on EU membership soon, they will lose power to the Radicals within a year.
Also, this can be exploited to discredit Kostunica because it implies that Karadzic was walking around freely when Kostunica was in power.

3) Every day that "Kosova" does not achieve its 100 recognitions is another day of diplomatic humiliation for the US. The bush administration must achieve some progress in the Balkans before it expires.

So the Tadic government, with full knowledge and complicity, by the EU, UN, and US found some strange, mysterious guy who bears a little resemblance to Karadzic, arrested the poor fellow, and accused him of being the infamous man. They know that Karadzic won't expose them; he no longer has to keep hiding. The way that the world media has quickly accepted this news, the timing of this arrest and Condi Rice's refusal to congratulate the Tadic government is very suspicious indeed. I hope they cut some kind of deal with this patsy; arresting an innocent hippie to perpetrate a monsterous lie is very sad. So, if you are a middle aged Serbian man who bears some resemblance to Ratko Mladic, run for your life! I, for one, will not be visiting Beograd in the near future, lest I be accused of being Goran Hadzic.

Yes what happened to the arrogant Karadžić of the 90s. Who spewed lies ,deceits of his arrogant self importance as a pretentious wind bag. Such bravery he showed and of the Serb army and people. Who they out gunned 99 to 1 their neighbors children ,woman ,men the murdered ,raped ,tortured ,starved ,cleansed from their homes the innocence of Bosnia. Brought a self righteous Serbian appointed murderous hell on their neighbors that Satan him self would of been proud of and claim as his. I here that he was disguised as a orthodox priest at times and talking about healthy living was he doing some kind psycho penance. I hope the psycho of a psychiatrist gets what is due to him and then some.

Who has killed more innocent Muslims, Radovan Karadzic or GW Bush? Which group is responsible for more civilian deaths, Serbian nationalists or Western neoconservatives? Even a cursory look proves neocons have killed hunderds of thousands more civilians than Karadzic could ever have dreamed. Yet how many neocons have ever faced justice?
