the only reason why you Albanians believe to be their descendants is, that you had no consolidated own culture like the Serbs or other nations of that time and therefore took over illyrian language and their home territory in the ( todays ) albanian mountains.

but of course, if you like it, we will let you in that illusion of being the oldest europeans... :)
(Jovan, 22 July 2008 00:00)

I really love the lengths you go in “proving” your theory.

So, we came to Balkans, looked around for the best plot of land. Then we decided to discard our language any take Illyrian language. This is what bestsellers are based on.
Jovan, has anybody told you that you try way too hard. While doing that you lose the actual aim of your comment, just becomes a Freudian sentence (it makes no sense).
And Jovan, please tell who is the “we” that you refer to, that will allow us live the illusion of being the oldest Europeans. Are you trying to tell us that we need your approval for that? The facts (something you would never understand) give us that right.

Jovan

pre 15 godina

hey blero! thanks for mentioning me, and at least trying to be ironic!

of course, Albanians are longer in the Balkans, longer than 20 years... :)

but what you were probably trying to insinuate, the legendary albanian myth of the illyrian descent, is still a rather weak expression of lacking selfrespect and wishful thinking!

I am certainly not upset, since the Romans, very civilized and progressive at that time, and they did record quite properly that the Slavs were arriving into areas not settled by the Illyrians, what´s by the way the reason why the Slavs were settling there at that time. the Illyrians are known to have assimilated into the local populations Serbs, Albanians but also Bulgarians and Croatians etc.

the only reason why you Albanians believe to be their descendants is, that you had no consolidated own culture like the Serbs or other nations of that time and therefore took over illyrian language and their home territory in the ( todays ) albanian mountains.

but of course, if you like it, we will let you in that illusion of being the oldest europeans... :)

this is not meant as an offense, but I think the Illyrians would be turning over in their graves if they could take notice of todays Albanians claiming to be their descendants!

Thaci promised that Kosovo would “achieve many more successes in order to become a member of NATO and the EU.”

Sorry Mr. Snake, I'm pretty sure that most people in my country, the Netherlands, don't like the idea of the poorest region/province/state of Europe joining the EU.

We hate to send large amounts of money to provinces or nations that have no economic prospects, and we fear people from any muslim country flooding our country (our "own" muslims, especially those from North Africa, are causing enough problems).

If you are such good friends with the Americans, why don't you join the USA, Canada & Mexico league?

I don't throw Poels into the mix because we have nothing to do with Illyrians. Illyrians are the original inhabitants of the Balkans together with Thracians, Macedonians and Greeks. The Slavs that settled in the Balkans only settled in those lands, assimilating the original tribes into theirs.

Are you trying to tell me that in over 14 centuries, Slavs and the original Balkan people didn't get it on at all?

Peter Sudyka

pre 15 godina

Hello blero,

I am in no way criticizing anybody here, the comments are just an observation.

The link between Rome and Illyrium can be seen with the amount of Roman Emperors of Illyrian descent, as well as the Praetorian Guard. Jovan is wrong when he claims that Albanians do not have Illyrian descent, however Albanians cannot claim exclusive Illyrian ancestry any more than the Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks.

Regarding the Ottoman Empire, yes, the were heroes like Skenderbeg and Dukagjini, but there were also Ottoman Emperors like Muhammad Ali of Egypt, not to mention the fact that Albanians were the only people (other than Bosniaks, Gorani, Torbesh etc.) who converted to Islam in the Balkans, hence leaving their old ways behind, just to gain favor with the Turks.

Regarding WWII, everyone knows that Albania had no problem with being allied with Italy because of the new borders that were set. The SS Division Skenderbeg is another example of collaboration with the Axis.

Regarding the Warsaw Pact, well OK, more the communist bloc in general is what I had in mind. Hoxha was ready to unite Albania with Yugoslavia at one stage, and Albania were so devoted to communism that they viewed Krushchev as too revisionist and later China too, hence their Stalinist isolation.

Now with the West, Albania and Kosovo are definitely the most pro-American countries in Europe, though it is too early now to easy all the effects that the West have had on Albanian mentality, wait a little.

To conclude blero, all I was saying is that when some major power favored Albanians, they would take their allegiance to the next level, why does this offend so many here? It's just my opinion based on observation.

Last thing, when I was still studying in Warsaw, there were three Albanian students living in the student apartments, I once got into an in-depth discussion with him and even he said something along the lines of the fact that Albanians will always bend their ways, alliances and culture to serve their personal and political goals, I think he is right when one sits down and looks at the history.

No offense meant, once again. Albanians here speak freely about Poland too, why shouldn't I have my say?

Peter,
Why don't you throw in the Poles in there while you are at it?

I know your slavic brothers have worked hard to break any link between Illyrian and Albanian, but including Serbs, Croats in the mix, that is just wrong.

First they fell in love with the Romans, then they fell in love with the Ottomans, then they fell in love with the Axis Powers, then they fell in love with the Warsaw Pact and now they have fallen in love with the West.
(Peter Sudyka, 19 July 2008 21:00)

It has been a while since I left a comment in this site so I might be a bit rusty (I know Peggy will be happy to hear of me).

Peter,

Since you decided to diverge from an “unbiased” voice to a historian I would really like to know the source of your knowledge.
Firstly, Romans: To start with, Jovan will be very upset with this remark of yours, since as you know Jovan remains adamant that Albanians arrived in Balkans in the last 20 years.
Jovan aside, please tell me at which point did Albanians fall in love with Rome. Please Peter, read in-depth the link between Ilyrians and Rome, then put comment like that.
Secondly Ottomans: Does name Skenderbeg rings a bell.
There is a huge list of Albanian heroes that have devoted their lives to freedom from the Ottoman Empire. Peter, don’t tell that Jovan (him again) has been providing you with history literature.
Peter, tell me how did it feel when Poland was invaded by Russia? Were you in love with them? In Bemovo (Warsaw) Peter you still have the Old Russian Bunkers (I believe 18th Century) . Not very hard to attack by the looks of them, but you did not for a long time.

Thirdly, the Axis Powers: Peter, you don’t know even 1% of the reality in the field before 1st and the second world war in Kosovo so you are not qualified to put judgments like that.

Next in Line – Warsaw Pact: If I recall correctly Peter, Albania kicked Russians out for them never to come back. What did you do?
Also Peter, please tell me, has anything good come to us from Russia? So falling in love with Warsaw Pact is like falling in love with a stepmother – never happens.

Finally, the west: Though you look at us with a high level or biasness and a narrow minded way Peter, we have always looked forward and never backwards.
Now Peter let us assume for a second that you are not biased (it is getting harder and harder as time goes by).
Then, put yourself in our shoes.
Once you have done that you are offered two choices.

1. Be with the one that you trust (Europe and world democracies) and is trying to help you and your economy.
2. Be with the one that has only (and will always) contributed to your misery (Russia).

Once you have done that Peter, please let me know your answer.
To conclude Peter, please put comments on things you know.
It is unlike you to go in tangent like this (unless of course this is not you and somebody else decided to use your logging details).

Mr Agim-Gjilan,
The international community that negotiates the cooexistance on artificial Kosovo and Bosnia will very soon accept Serbs' referendums to walk out of unharmonius living with people like you with whom the war never ends. Soon you will be, like Macedonia, asked to think about a different name for your country: Kosovo is a Serbian word that you cannot use for for your new-born country.

pre 15 godina

Dear all,
I am not sure why you all think that America does this for the favor of Kosovars or agaisnt Serbs! No, the answer is NO, because it's on thier own Iterest to rule this part of the world, but Kosovars have no interest on that because it's out of their capacity. Serbia maybe will die wantting to get Kosovo back but no they will never do it! They should be very cerefull what they do with Voivodina because they could be loosing that too, and forget about Kosovo complitly, as they did about Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro etc....
My recomendation would be Keep Serbia clean and work on your own curruption so that is on the best for the people of Serbia, cos people will otherwise be only victims of Criminals that use people for their own power.

To Serbian posters,

Russia is buying your assets for cheap.

A few years from now, when your spineless politicians will find the courage to tell you that this matter was solved from the beginning, you will understand how Russia took advantage of you.

Kosovo has strong reasons to honor and thank the United States of America. I cannot say the same for Serbia and Russia.

Moscow is only paying lip-service to your cause and ended its engagement to Kosovo in 2003, when Putin withdrew his troops (because of financial reasons - what a joke.)

Joe,

Very true. Unless it's either from Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc., such meetings do not make news. Can't disagree with you there. Yet you'd think that for what this administration must be craving for good news and a chance to show that someone out there likes us, they'd play this up a little more.

AdPRN,

Your Washington Post link didn't work.

The CNN link was cute: the Kosovo story embedded at the bottom of an article focused on Iran. I thought of looking there when I made by first comment, but thought even if it were there, embedded at little more than an attachment to something the media deemed more important, didn't warrant my attention.

What of it. IMF is not a diplomatic body. It is a financial organisation whose voting process is weighted by the amount of money each country puts into it.

First they fell in love with the Romans, then they fell in love with the Ottomans, then they fell in love with the Axis Powers, then they fell in love with the Warsaw Pact and now they have fallen in love with the West. If the West were to fall and let's say, China and India become the next world power, I am pretty sure that Albania and Kosovo will be first in line to pay their respects and praise for the power in charge, hehe.

What of it. IMF is not a diplomatic body. It is a financial organisation whose voting process is weighted by the amount of money each country puts into it.

And as the G7 have all recognised silly 'pseudo-state', stands to reason that they dominate this voting process.

Apart from investment funding, IMF 'recognition' means nothing.

Thaci promised that Kosovo would “achieve many more successes in order to become a member of NATO and the EU.”

Sorry Mr. Snake, I'm pretty sure that most people in my country, the Netherlands, don't like the idea of the poorest region/province/state of Europe joining the EU.

We hate to send large amounts of money to provinces or nations that have no economic prospects, and we fear people from any muslim country flooding our country (our "own" muslims, especially those from North Africa, are causing enough problems).

If you are such good friends with the Americans, why don't you join the USA, Canada & Mexico league?

the only reason why you Albanians believe to be their descendants is, that you had no consolidated own culture like the Serbs or other nations of that time and therefore took over illyrian language and their home territory in the ( todays ) albanian mountains.

but of course, if you like it, we will let you in that illusion of being the oldest europeans... :)
