one more thing Joe, you were "stunned" to learn that a foreigner has to registered within 24 hours of coming to Serbia? Were you "stunned" to know that a foreigner has to submit all his 10 fingers AND a picture (kinda like a criminal) when coming to the US? That didn't stun you? Were you stunned to learn that foreigners, including students, have to register with Homeland Security within 30 days??! Are you stunned that your President Bush just passed a resolution on evesdropping?! You better watch out when you go back home that somebody might be listening to your phone conversation, 100% legal now.

Joe, we were not talking about citizens going back home, that's a whole different subject. Go back and you'll see that we were discussing foreigners going abroad and we were comparing them getting treated differently here and there. Frans was treated here in Serbia obviously according to the law of the land, unfortunately he violated it and got punished for it. I'm sure if an alien violated the law in the US would get treated the same if not worse (thrown in jail and kept there while court proceedings end and then deported). Don't tell me spending 14 days in jail for not registering is harsh or backwards, look at your own government, Bush's government that is, it's even worse towards foreigners. All travellers, Americans, Dutch, English need to know where they're going and what are their responsibilities before they leave, Google is a good start. It's YOUR responsibilities so you don't end up like frans. in short, anybody who complains needs to stop being hateful and to stop whining!

American,

I am a US citizen myself and whenever I return from abroad I am always delighted the get this warm welcome, a greating from the passport officer: "Welcome Home". Yes I find it a kind of royal treatment, so different from many ex-communist European countries, including Serbia.
And despite fingerprinting you could not deny - even if you are a Serbian-American - that hundreds of millions of foreigners would gladly move to the US. How many foreigners are streaming to Serbia? How many Serbs expatriates are moving back to the "old country"?

Yea sure Joe, I find it far more civilized for you to simply drop a registration card at the police station whe you arrive in Serbia than providing the royal treatment of figerprinting all 10 of your fingers when coming to the US, and then of course having to register with Homeland Security within 30 days. It's clear to me which is normal and which is not.

frans,

I was stunned to learn that a foreigner has to register by the police within 24 hours. Wow!. This used to be the case in ex-communist countries. So it shows that in Serbia most things did not change. It is still like in Belorus and Russia. And this country wants to join the EU? There is a very long way to catch up to normal counties.

A NY paper highlighted the old Serbian policy - called double talk - in this affair.
As per Jeremic Serbia would like to fulfill her international obligations but on the other side protect her citizens (guilty or not guilty).
Well this affair will continue to poison the already strained relations between the two countries.

Lucky for the youngster that Serbia isn't a part of the EU.

US could grab him off the street & ship him back on one of its rendition flights then.

frans, the law is law, you don't need to be hateful just because you violated the law and you were prosecuted for violating it. You clearly knew that you had to register within 24 hours of entering Serbia and you didn't. You can only blame yourself. I'm sure the Netherlands have it's own laws as well and they don't go easy on immigrants.

Arrest Kovacevic, your country doesn't extradite murderers and rapists who commit crimes abroad and one of your consulates in Italy advised and gave passports to two Americans involved in the sexual torture and death of a British student. You are a nation of hypocrites.

Not only that but the police report involving the case said Kovacevic was not involved. So basically, you should stop being a troll.

better for K to run back top the USA. I was sentenced by a Serbian judge to 14 days in jail (and served it) only for not registering with the local police within 24 hours as a tourist. A SHAME for Serbia, a shame that someone even dares to say soemthing good about this country. As a friend of Serbia, I changed 180 degrees. This is not a normal country, and no normal judges! Kovacevic, better run away!

He did the crime in US against a US citizen. He needs to be tried here. CCCC doesn't mean holding criminals away from justice. He should not have done the crime, if he didn't want to do the time.

As previously said: ask USA to extradict Bill Clinton.

Otherwise read between the lines here:

The fairest of all solutions: Kovacevic has to be tried in Belgrade.
Good job done by Serbian diplomacy!
