Ataman,

If I understand you correctly you are already in Belgrade. That was a quick move. I wish you all the best. Apparently you have a lot of courage.
As things develop even in Hungary - high inflation...most food prices, gaz higher than in the US especially if 1$=147 forint is taken in account I start to consider Hungary again as a black hole and re-consider my previous plans to spend their longer periods. The catastrophic quality of the health sector is an other factor. There are still few things there very cheap like sour cherries and water melon but one does not live on those things alone.
As for that teacher of yours it is beyond me how she took you to court. There are class discussions and disagreements but no teacher takes you to court because of that. Was there any verbal insult toward the US or something more serious that triggered the case?
And about that isolated case of 9 years ago (I never heard about) it was apparently blown out of proportion in old Europe. By most Europeans there is a terrible complex or hang up versus the US. They resent the might of this country and try to prove themselves that in certain areas they are better. They jump sometime on ridiculous isolated events to justify their views . Don't they have anything better to do? Since European countries are generally welfare states people get too much leasure time to dig in and bring up some dirt about the US. They could spend their time more judiciously but again Europe is Europe.

Dear Joe,

We do not plan, we already did. Don't worry, we are crazy enough to happily survive in that black hole of the world you were once part of. There are many private reasons and despite what you may think, we do not dislike USA. But USA is not 100% peachy either and I allow myself to criticize it's justice system, healthcare system, jobs not producing everything, outsourcing, education system, religious bigotry, politics and dirty business mingled together, transportation system (to name few). This November we are going to vote for CHANGE. Accept this diversity, even if as I noticed from the "Nagycsapat" web ring, we are in minority among Hungarians in the States (OK, we are not in the States anymore).

The story of the old Croatian couple+me versus the citizenship teacher is true, but I did not wanted to tell it twice. The poor lady (teacher) could not get, why premising the prosecutors for the conviction and penalizing for non-convition is conflict of interest. Obviously, in good olde Europe it's not the case. This is a conflict between European and American culture and it's where even Russia is closer to Germany than Germany to USA.

There is no doubt, American justice system is flawed and highly unfair and this is one of the many reasons. As far as Bosnians involved in the case: hope, they have their passports ready.

This was a famous case with dual passports and lucky escape:

http://www.worldlymind.org/swissboy.htm

The truth - we red it in German newspaper: there was no child abuse, incest, what-not. Simply the 11 year old boy was helping his sister to go pee-pee, she was too young to handle the clothes. That's it. A nosy witness and a local sheriff full of self-importance made a case. If not the Swiss passport, the family would be in a big doo-doo.

I doubt Kovacevic even knew Bryan Steinhauer was Jewish when the fight was started by his Bosnian Muslim friend and Steinhauer. Kovacevic simply got into the middle of it after Steinhauer aggressed on Softic (head-butting), and was hit in the head by the wound-up and probably drunk Steinhauer.

The two other men involved were Bosnian nationals (including the boyfriend) yet they received a lower bond back in May and only 2nd degree charges (the judge has recently upgrader their charges to 1st degree).

Kovacevic left partly due to him getting most of the blame due to his height and appearance (and perhaps Serbian ancestry) instead of the Bosnian Muslim guys who were likely the ones who kept pummeling Steinhauer as he lay on the ground.

It was the boyfriend who was in the jealous, angry rage at Steinhauer and thought he was after and did something to his girlfriend.

Kovacevic just reacted to the hit by Steinhauer then stopped.

I doubt the Bosnian men and their attorneys are going to be telling the truth of their part as they are trying to lay it off on Kovacevic.

Kovacevic felt he was going to be railroaded.

Besides that he'd probably be singled out for abuse in a U.S. prison due to his being ethnic Serb.

And considering the high rate of AIDS and other homosexual diseases among U.S. prisoners, a years long jail sentence could be a death sentence.

Best the trial be done through telelink and he serve his time in Serbian prisons which have an extremely lower rate of diseases from homosexual activities.

Ataman,

You re-introduced your comment of yesterday by leaving out that fishy puzzling story of "debate" in that citizenship class. I think you realized in the mean time that it did not make too much sense to use it to dump on the US system in general.
You must be more unhappy here than I ever imagined. No wonder that you plan to relocate to Belgrade ASAP. There according to you every thing is just peachy. Just tell it to the converted...

Here are a some facts on prison's in the US:

The country with the highest percentage of it's population in prison is the US of A.

The country with the greatest number of prisoners is also the good old US of A.

The US comprises 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's incarcerated population.

In an academic survey of 1,788 male inmates in Midwestern prisons, about 21% claimed they had been coerced or pressured into sexual activity during their incarceration, and 7% claimed that they had been raped in their current facility.

Estimates of the percentage of the prison population infected with hep C range from 20 to 40%.

The largest single component of the US economy is that associated with & supporting the 'department of defence'.

The second largest, is that associated with & supporting the 'department of corrections'.

In short, the US is very good at killing people & locking them up.

There are some criminals convinced by Serbian court - but they live like a free bird in America. Like William Clinton, for instance. Should there be an exchange?

Otherwise few facts about the justice system in the States. The American justice system is skewed.

Basically - if someone does not know - in the States the job of the prosecutor is to convince ANYWAY - and there is MONETARY INTEREST for convincing (premium, etc). That means, the prosecutor will:

1) possibly shorter of some money
2) take a hit as a "defeat"

if there is no conviction.

Normally, the job of the prosecutor to present the case of the State to his best and pursue the truth (and not possibly hide details which would undermine his case or influence the jurors for his own benefit).

The (IMHO wrong) contra-argument is: "if the defendant hires a lawyer, it's fair for the state the hire own "lawyer" (prosecutor) and let the two fight with all means they have".

However: if the prosecutor is personally involved - that is essentially a conflict of interest.

This is why American justice system basically cannot be trusted.

An other reason: most people can afford a decent defense lawyer in BG, but not in the States. If anyone is just touched by American legal system, that is a touch of death at worst and touch of financial death at best.

A guilty has to be punished - but not beyond reason. American justice system does it well beyond reason, hence the procedure was correct. I am glad, Serbia does not extradict own citizens. However, Kovacevic has to stand trial in BG - at least it will be a fair one. Let Serbian judge(s) decide. Nothing wrong with that.

If USA feels, this cuts into it's pride: that's a false pride. Serbia is a democratic country with a justice system better than what is in the U.S. and it can properly decide who is a criminal and convince such criminals. For instance, Bill Clinton.

The truth - we red it in German newspaper: there was no child abuse, incest, what-not. Simply the 11 year old boy was helping his sister to go pee-pee, she was too young to handle the clothes. That's it. A nosy witness and a local sheriff full of self-importance made a case. If not the Swiss passport, the family would be in a big doo-doo.
