Ahmet - strange you should feel any differently about China when it holds the same stance towards the necessity of holding further discussions and reaching a decision acceptable to all [http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-06/21/content_8412120.htm]

EA - It's not 'Serbs and Kosovars' but Kosovo Serbs and Kosovo Albanians, and a compromise must be reached which Belgrade and Pristina can live with, otherwise there will never be any legitimacy for the status of the province.

Ahmet - The opinion that any changes can be made as Mr Ban sees fit is just that - an opinion. There is no legal basis to change the mandate of the mission, and at the moment Mr Ban's plans for reconfiguration are also just a proposal.

You belittle your own comments by calling Russia and China 'jokers'. You can't have a serious point of view about the Security Council when you fail to recognise these important nations as part of the bigger picture.

Kate,

What kind of compromise are you talking about?
I have mentioned so many times that when it comes to Status there would be no compromise between the Serbs and Kosovars. I am surprised with you that can't see that. A decision HAD to BE TAKEN as status quo was untenable. More than two million people in Kosova needed to know what their future hold!

have you watched UNSC debate, it was very clear at least to me and most of the world where UN member nations stand with exception of some joker states(2 of them). I rememebr very clearly when UNSC President, which was seating next to Ban-ki Moon when he told him that notus but you Mr. SG , at desrcretion can make changes/reconfiguartion as you see it fit.
I wonder when some of posters on this site that are British passport holders will wake up from the bad dream. Ops, have you seen the British Ambassador at UN addressing first the President of Kosova nad secon the Serbian President. Also, Croatioan Ambassador was very bkunt and nailed Serbia very badly.

""You have all heard what the reconfigured UNMIK will look like. It will be smaller, with different responsibilities. It will not be removed completely, because the UN still have responsibilities in Kosovo," the German diplomat told reporters at the Priština airport yesterday."

My goodness, I'm surprised he wasn't interviewed on the plane or when he returned home - he is obviously desperate to have a final say.

Th fact is that Princip is right - the EU as a body never agreed to act in any way other than status neutral.

The UN cannot scale down their operation which is mandated under Res. 1244 until Serbia and the UN Security Council reach an agreement about any changes which would enable them to pass duties to EULEX.
