EU leaders have declared that Serbia is capable of accelerating her European integration, and becoming eligible to receive candidate status.

A Serbia in the EU puts Serbia in a better position to defend its territorial integrity than if it is not in the EU. As long as no recognition of unilaterl independence of kosovo is asked of Serbia, then it should push for the EU as soon as possible. A European Serbia will have much more power POLITICALLY to stop the ruling govt in Pristina from gaining any influence.

nobody in the eu thinks that serbia will become candidate, that's hot air aimed at making nitwits in serbia feel all warm, fuzzy and loved :)
then there are two kinds of people in serbia who talk about european integration and that's cynical pro west trolls whose job it is to spread this propaganda and naive or maybe downright unintelligent citizen who has no idea what integration means beyond that he thinks someone will add 50 extra euros to his 400 wage and he wont have to do anything to earn it. the reality is that serbia doesnt need the eu and will not join and the same is in the eu who dont need serbia and will not accept serbia. eu is in deep crisis and hopefully it will slowly degrade back to economic union. this wont happen without apparatchiks or overlords putting up a fight, but that's eu's final destination. i, will immensely enjoy watching it.

Since the rejection of the Lisbon treaty and EU constitution the door to EU membership is closed so what's the point?
The EU needs to sort itself out first assuming it can. Otherwise it will head down the road of self-destruction and Serbia would do well to steer clear.
In the mean time, building links with all interested parties, both within and out of the EU should be priority. The EU is not the be all and end all for Serbia. There is a whole world out there!
