"In the short term it could be the end of SPS - as we know it. In its place, 2 elections down the line, could appear a true socialist party. You should be aware that all surveys that have posed questions on the subject suggest that a majority of Serbian citizens have sympathy for socialist values."

That's very good news about these surveys bganon. And the fact that this broad opinion is not reflected in many votes for the SPS shows how little people see the SPS as having anything to do with its name. So I hope you're right that a demise of the SPS may lead to the rise of an actual socialist party. That way too, we may be able to dispense with the unfortunate services of people like Palma, who could then go back to his natural allies in the SRS/DSS party.

Whatever a socialist party can be, one thing it cannot be is a national chauvinist party, like that of Milosevic. The two things are mutually exclusive. Whatever Tito's errors, and sure there were many, he at least had some understanding of that, with the hgh level autonomy in Kosovo/a and the multi-ethnic nature of Bosnia, with Muslims as equals, plus recognsing a Macedonian nation, reasons why ultra-right Serbian and Greek nationalists hate him.

I guess that's why a few years ago, when the SPS just began to move a little away from his "heritage", Slobo from the Hague advocated a vote for the SRS instead of his own party.

bganon, what are you suggesting? The DS are trying to create their very own Kostunica? I'd prefer to settle for the real thing than some freaky creation.

I really don't care if this Frankenstein coalition goes ahead. I know it won't last long so the only real alternative will be an SRS/DSS coalition when elections are called.

You can have Palma and all the other rotten apples. An SRS/DSS coalition without them would do far better. The reason Serbia has so many elections is because they keep getting it wrong.

ZK that link you sent looks uncannily like Vojislav Kostunica or at least Corax's representation of him.

Yes bganon, sign on the dotted line. Here is a copy of the deal http://www.printactivities.com/ColoringPages/Frankenstein-Coloring-Pages/Frankenstein-walking-2.gif

The SPS should realise that signing is the end of them - just like the other pieces being sewn into this abomination.

If this turns out to be true it will mark the end of the SPS Party because come next elections their supporters will not forget what they did and those votes will go to the Radicals, in fact I suspect that the SPS will have less than 2% votes next time around, even Cedo Jovanovic will have more votes.

Will SPS stop mucking about and sign the deal.
Some of us have known for ages they would eventually do this.
They ought to stop holding up the country.

Hopefully they will form a govt that all the people living in UK and other places (that are safe outside of Serbian borders) can accept.

Are they trying to get Frankenstien to live? It has been put together by the EU/US to serve the US/EU but they can't seem to get the right parts.

Even if they manage by some miracle it will probably die soon after and if need be, the people will rise to put an end to the "Sell Serbia to EU" monster.

There are a few rotten apples in Serbian politics at the moment and this only works against the interests of the people.

More roumours or just the same old roumours rehashed around the news media?

23rd May;
"DS deputy leader Dusan Petrovic said he has informed Tadic that the manifesto of the coalition "For a European Serbia" had support of 142 members of Parliament. " http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-05/23/content_8234694.htm

28th May;
"“About 90 per cent of the Socialist Party have made up their minds and will cooperate with us… I expect the main bodies of that party to confirm such a move soon,” head of the close-to-Tadic G17 Plus technocrat party Mladjan Dinkic said, adding he expected a pro-European government to be formed by June 5.

Deputy leader of the DS Dusan Petrovic backed Dinkic and said that the pro-European coalition had gathered 142 members of parliament." http://www.sofiaecho.com/article/serbian-nationalists-socialists-sign-belgrade-coalition-local-government-deal/id_29582/catid_68

- 5th June came and went I wonder if this weekend will be the sa or not ? Could it be ust like Markovic's promise of goveremnet by last week thursday or new elections as adviseed by those who "inform" him such as UK & US Ambassadors?

Interesting to see what does happen this weekend but if nothing happens I guess these ploys will be tried again and again..!
