hell with russian planes, we should join NATO and become american puppet and buy F-22s to spend 20% of serbian GDP, then fool damn americans and sell f-22 technology to rest of the world(russia, china, india) for tens of billions of euros!!!

Considering Serbia's military budget, perhaps we should consider rubberband-powered fighters - a lot cheaper, and almost as goog as the Orao. Good thing nobody was seriously injured or killed. Fighter planes belong in museums!

If the time comes to replace fighter, they should consider the MIG35. At $32mil/USD they are half the cost of the F22 but every bit as agile with its multivector thrust capabilites. I think the India military bought a bunch of these.

@Michael John, Orao (Eagle) Hasn't got any connection with Russia/USSR at all! It was designed by Yugoslavia and Romania in the 70s, engines on it are Rolls-Royce, Martin Baker seat etc. How come you dare to criticize other people without having slightest knowledge about that aircraft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J-22_Orao

Thank goodness the pilot is safe first and foremost.

Su-27 and up (30,35) surpass any versions of the F-16/F-15/F-18 fighter planes in performance, range, radar length, and speed. The only real match technology wise is the F-22 with the latest Su-35B.

If Serbia purchased around 30 Su-35B's and several S-400 SAM batteries its airspace would be locked and secured, Of course for all that you need cash and lots of it. In any case Serbia should go for what its needs require.

The J-22's and Mig-21's are old...really old and need to be put down, other wise they are just blowing money away.

fas,

What did you expect from a Russian designed plane. The Orao, a piece of junk, was put together in Sebia, but all the parts are Russian.

Next time you wish to criticize a "Yankee" plane please have your facts straight!

An Eagle is not an American plane, it is the Orao from the times of Tito, a Yugoslav plane. Considering their age, it is no suprize that it crashed. Do you live in Serbia or elsewhere that you don't know about this?

While I agree that the latest Sukhois are excellent planes, they are no match for the latest American F-16s and soon-to-enter-service F-22 Raptors, so I don't know what "Worthless peace of yankee-disneyland-junk" you are talking about.

Serbia should consider NATO aircraft if it wants to maintain a true competitive edge, Poland recently bought 48 of the latest F-16s to enter NATO and American service, the Block D, since then our airforce compares to that of the big players in NATO and their missions. Serbia should aim for these too, if it were up to me, I would not think twice when comparing this to a Sukhoi.

Except maybe the S-47, that looks quite dangerous!

Dear fas, I agree with you!
Sukhoi are cheaper than the western counterparts. Serbia cannot afford an expense to buy state of the art planes.
