Kosovo journalist to face Hague trial

I'm sorry but 'journalists' like this one sicken me. They hide behind the supposed freedom of the press and claim the public has a right to know.

Take a coffee with them in private though and you find that they believe they are doing their patriotic duty to defend their country or what they consider to be a divine leader. To hell with the witnesses who might be killed or threatened and to hell with victims who need the truth to be established.

A similar thing happened in Croatia with supposed journalists Margetic, Seselj (and some other guy) from the ultra right wing Hrvatsko Slovo, revealed the names of trial witnesses in a Hague trial. Parts of Croatian society rallied to their defence deploring the Hagues actions, defending the freedom of the press etc.

I support press freedom but worthless journalists should be sanctioned.

The same news was published by B92, including the name of the protected witnesses. I wonder why is not Veran Matic, B92 director, being sent to The Hague?!

Haxhiu is one of the most respected journalists in Kosovo and during his carrier he has been editor in chief for Koha Ditoe, Zeri and Express, newspapers used as sources by B92/Beta on daily basis.

Is is sad, very, very sad that ICTY now is begening to attack freedom of speech, just because they have not been able to convict an Albanian.

The name should not have been published but what the Hague is doing now is against UN Human Rights Conevention.

I'd have to agree with bganon on this one.

Just because Haxhiu is popular in Kosova does not make him untouchable or infallible.

In fact, he reminds me of what happened in the States where a "respected" journalist made public the name of a CIA agent (Valerie Plame) possibly endangering the lives of any folks she came in contact with during her career, not to mention other intelligence operations implications. While what he did was not illegal, his choice of publishing what the Bush administration privately leaked, may have cost lives.

To most of my fellow Albanians, Haradinaj is probably a war hero. But that does not change the fact that two witnesses of the prosecution were murdered and others were intimidated. This makes the revelation of this witness' identity a very serious matter.

I am albanian and glad they arrested him, I do have respect for Mr. Haradinaj but Mr.Haxhiu has vialoted every right of the witnesess and he doesnt look like a professional journalist whatsoever. I dont know who the witness was but exposing their cover does not make sense what so ever, and actually it makes you look weak , maybe I am used to american standards of the reporting.

Used to American standards of reporting huh? Hope you’re joking because if you are not then there is something wrong with you. Haven’t you heard of the journalists from Washington Post, New York Times, Times, Newsweek, etc. They all deal with controversy situations, and most high profile trials are broadcasted all over the media. This does not justify what Mr. Haxhiu did, however, claiming this is wrong because you are used to American standards of reporting is pathetic.

Uran I know what I am talking about ,would you like me to give you sources, the most recent one , is from Valerie Plame from that big headed weak journalist Bob Novak, then another case imagine deep throat that brought Nixon down. I have lost family member from this war and it was Serbs who killed my Family. But in all esence of fairness I dont think witneses should be exposed to danger. It is the witness who shed light to truth at some point , and I know that you can have fake witness, but I dont think that you should be weak person and expose and I am sure mr haxhiu knows that, based on the perspective of being professional. Trust me I live in NYC and I have seen reporters fake the story or just add something so the story looks little bit more tragic I guess . But professional journalists like Bob Woodard make journalism stand up to to it's own standandards, and offer truth to the story.
