"Serbia winning battle against AIDS"

The number of AIDS patients and people dying of AIDS in Serbia is leveling out thanks to preventive measures that have been taken, says the health minister.

And to think that 15 years ago, you couldn't even mention, let alone lecture students about AIDS.

A pioneer in going around to schools and informing Serbian students about AIDS was a young nurse from Belgrade. Ms. Spasojevic was motivated after listening to her 10 years younger sister and her friends talking about AIDS myths and ludicrous methods of how to avoid becoming infected.

Ms Spasojevic was only able to go around schools in Belgrade lecturing students on AIDS and safer sex because she had a colleague in the Health Ministry. Even so, she was reported to the authorities on many occasions by school officials.

Ms Spasojevic was awarded for her efforts in 1997 as an Educator of the Year, Member of International AIDS-Prevention Education Team.
