In a sorry state, based on what?

If you compare the data to Finland, and scale it according to the population, then there are only about 10% more children involved in accidents in Serbia. That does not sound too bad.

Scaling the number of accidents by the total amount of kilometers driven in each country would probably be more relevant, but that data is not available.

Thanks bob, I totally agree with you. The problem is with idiotic drivers.

I have travelled the world and the drivers of Southern Europe/Serbia are among the worst I've seen. (Worst being in Middle East)

Excessive speed - 160km/h on the highways is average for some. On city streets, it's almost a game to dodge in and out of lanes, tram tracks, sidewalks, etc, all in order to look like you're cool/macho. Perhaps Serbia should play these Australian road safety commercials to show what people really think of these drivers. ;-)

The emphasis in this article is wrong.

The biggest cause is not the children's lack of ability or awareness, it is the selfish lack of consideration on the part of a very large number of drivers.

Aggressive driving is very common - and it is no surprise that this generally bad driving causes accidents.

For every person who overtakes me because he thinks he is 'clever' there is someone else (me) thinking 'what an idiot' that person is.

Lack of innovative road design in Serbia allows the aggressive drivers to drive dangerously - increasingly elsewhere in the world roads are being redesigned to slow traffic down by being narrower and more obstructed. Certainly this needs to be done in most villages - a speed limit is not enough as too many ignore it and others dangerously overtake the cars that have slowed down.

Politicians have been dithering on the issue of roads - and because of that lives are being lost.
