sergei,
I agree with your analysis that education system in America has become flawed way below most of our competitors in the technology circle of nations. My problem was when you quoted literacy rates which is simply being able to read and write not to any type of advanced degree. Most non third world countries are in the high 90s while Cuba is 2nd on the list there is not an overwhelming difference in it and 60 other countries. But I do concede that their elementary and secondary education is more structured and successful that America.
When you have one person who didtates everything you are going to have areas that excell. But I don't have to tell anyone here the difference in communist and democratic societies. but it is at what price you want freedom.
Diane, it depends on whether you mean to visit or live. There are a lot of fantastic places to visit but you don't want to live there. Your statemen however gives me very little belief that you actually set foot on the soil in Cuba. Tens of thousands of people risk their lives each year in makeshift boats and rafts over 90 miles of open sea with a large percentage dying on the way just for a better life. I have not heard of anyone risking their life to get out of America.
The slaving for McDonalds is the thing that gives you away. A lot of people do work for McDonalds, Burger King, etc the same as a lot of people in Serbia work in coffee shops and cafes. A person working for McDonalds full time (40 hours per week) is guaranteed to make 997 dollars a month. comapred to 15 in Cuba. what is the avg in Serbia. You paint this as a dishonorable job. Vast majority of people who work these jobs are teenagers and college students. But even the people who this is their life work, I say this if they are trying to make an honest living it is an honorable job.
ps. You would not be able to comment on this website from Cuba because internet use is extremely policed, as is in russia and potentially future Serbia.

It comes down to two scenarios: First, if the Radicals win, Serbia is going to be hated offically and her resources will be exploited. Second, if the democrats win Serbia will be treated like a dog and her resources will be exploited.

Kosovo, will be used in a tug of war between Serbs and Others. Albanians do not realise that South Vietnam put thier trust into America also.

I have been to both Cuba and America and certainly prefer Cuba- perhaps this is why the American government does not allow it citizens to travel there. America is ok for the rich business people who but has no social justice. Cuba felt safe, has incredible high literacy levels, excellent education and medical facilities- all done in spite of American sanctions and evrything the USA could do to destroy it. Imagine how great Cuba might be without sanctions- it has done fantastically well with every obstacle put in it's way from the USA. What are the USA so scared of? If you want the 'FREEDOM' to work and slave for McDonalds support America if you want justice support Cuba- simple.

ДРУГ,

"… Nikolic says sounds very good …"

I agree, I support everything what he sad here.

"… Serbia … non-alignment policy …"

Yes, that is our best chance. Aside from very close cooperation with Russia, we also need to use positive sides of globalization to our advantage. It was never so easy to trade globally as it is now. Distance doesn't really meter any more. We do not need to depend on the EU. What does EU and US make that we can't by cheaper in Asia? What can we sell to EU?

We had very good experience from the cooperation with members of the Non Aligned Movement. Many friendships were formed then, we need to refresh them. Trade with these countries has huge potential for the common development. Some of these countries are booming economies these days, others are very reach with natural sources and in need of technical development. Serbia could play important role in big infra structural projects and technology transfer in some fields.

The future seems very compelling for Mr. Nikolic. It's understandable he is looking to his Russian "friends". Their ex-president is certainly his idol. Putin also started as a normal KGB officer in Leipzig, earning about 3000 Rubels a month. Now he has saved 80 Million Euro, enough for his pension. For himself and his friends he could let build a large Villa-park in the middle of the woods, where no one is allowed to near the place; it is guarded by the military. The costs for this carried the Russian state/tax-payers. So Nikolic can expect, when Russia supports a SRS-government by sending money, no one in Russia will ask, what he is doing with the money. Nikolic knows that he will have only four years to come on the same level as his Russian friend, because he will be realistic enough to know, that his government of Serbia will not exceed 4 years. From grave-digger to gold-digger, almost an American dream!
But I think that his time as leader of the Serbian nation, will be much shorter, and then he will get the same decisive opposition as his former partner Milosevic. Cheer up, Serbs, after Nikolic better times will come, but don't think that you are strong enough to get on your feet alone, because you will need help to come out of the bottom of your economic situation.
Think of this: after Russia lost his influence on Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary and others, they only have the Serbs to be their real Slaves. Don't let you put by them on the same level as the Chechenians or Ossetians.

Cuba, according to Wikipedia; “The most comprehensive study of U.S. adult literacy ever commissioned by the U.S. government argues that such adults are functionally illiterate--they cannot read well enough to hold a good job. This government study showed that 21% to 23% of adult Americans were not "able to locate information in text", could not "make low-level inferences using printed materials", and were unable to "integrate easily identifiable pieces of information." Working in public education, I believe those numbers are understated. United Nations Development Programme Report 2007/2008 list Cuba as second in the world (to Georgia) with a 99.4% rate. I am not comparing the quality of life in the countries (indeed, I enjoy living of the plunder of the Empire), just the educational priorities.

Well, it seems that many serbs hope that Russia will be their biggest partner when it comes to economy. Reality looks different. There is several times more russian investment in Bulgaria and Romania, BECAUSE those are EU members. Capitalism has it`s own rules, and if you don`t follow them, you lose.

After Nikolic takes over the PM's office, i will anticipate many countries abandoning Serbia and parting with its position on Kosovo. Some nationalists in Serbia may see Tadic as being weak, but far from it. Tne big reason why some of Serbia's neighbors, some EU countries and many other developing countries do not flock to the side of recognizing Kosovar independence is because of Tadic's cooler disposition and his greater willingness to engage and compromise. Nikolic will simply make it so much easier for all those that still have irrational anger and disdain to Serbia. Indeed, a case of irony.

Cuba

It seems like most of the posters who want to push Serbia closer to Russia and imminent isolation by saying Russia won't allow that to happen, are the ones who abandoned the motherland for a better life in the Western World.
sergei-which states are you referring and you are a part of what? If you are referring to the US have you looked at the literacy rate?
Sources go between 99 and 99.5%
But if you think life in Cuba is wonderful feel free to move there, just don't take all the Serbian people with you.
And Jan from Amsterdam I do not wish a life of Russian domination and isolation on the Serbian people but there are 2 roads to take right now and there are alot of people who are benefitting from their life in the west that want to deny that ability to the people of their homeland.

Serbia was isolated in the 90s due to Russian weakness but Russia would not allow that again. No sanctions and no isolation. The world is on Serbia's side and now that the EU and US have recognised their occupation it has finally allowed Serbia to break free of their chains.

The only people who will remain isolated are the Albanians in Kosovo.

The Balkans rely on each other for economic prosperity so I'd like to see any of Serbia's neighbours impose restrictions on their economy. Isolation my backside!

Jan (Amsterdam)

pre 15 godina

The only way that Serbia will be isolated again (like in the 90's) will be when the EU and others decide to do that in case the Serbian voters in fair and democratic elections will select parties that have no interest to turn Serbia into a EU, US and NATO stooge. Of course people in Serbia want to have a better life than the past 17 years (at least a level they enjoyed in Yugoslavia). If the EU cannot accept that Nikolic and other pro-Serbian parties will win it will actually show its true democratic face (which is quite low for many EU officials are appointed during closed sessions and they have obligations to show responsibility towards the people in the EU countries). Serbia should follow its own interests first and Serbian people will decide that. The EU must realize that their pro-Tadic PR has been a complete joke and Serbs know who they can trust. As an outsider Nikolic's words in the article seem very reasonable and realistic and by no means extreme. It would not hurt to drop the Radical part and replace it by Patriotic or so. Anybody claiming that Serbia will be a Balkan Cuba, North Korea, Birma, and so on is just writing what he or she wish for, because he or she is afraid of a strong, confident and independent Serbia that can have good business relationship with many other countries without giving up its Serbian identity and trade it for a fake EU identity that does not exist. Here in The Netherlands many people are fed up with the EU with all its rules and other bad things that come with it (of course there are also good things, but at some point of time you have to draw a line).

I think Nikolic should promise and try to tackle issues like Serbia's 20% unemployment rate and the rising inflation rate (what was it last, like 15%?) rather than this eternal Kosovo, Kosovo, Kosovo issue and this isolation issue too.

Surely the welfare of the people is far more important than a part of the country they cannot control.

Actually everything Nikolic says sounds very good for a Russian ear. He calls spade a spade and always talks open with no secret bottoms or two meanings. I believe he is the one to be closest to Putin by his spirit and most of the approaches while Kostunica has a temper like Medvedev.

In any case Serbia will win more of new non-alignment policy it once has developed. Moreover the SAA as it is looks more like a free trade protocol but not a full EU membership plan. So it all reminds of the old Middle Of The Road to be revived.

The birth of the European Cuba begins. Cuba's closest ally has always been Russia and that fact enabled Castro to stay in power 4 decades. Currently they have averae wage of 15-20 dollars a month.

sergei,
I agree with your analysis that education system in America has become flawed way below most of our competitors in the technology circle of nations.

Serbia today stands at the threshold of greatness and untold riches...provided it doesn't fall into the EU trap and thus goes about surrendering Kosovo.
(vencor, 6 May 2008 19:42)

vencor, once more your words prove that you have no idea of living in Serbia. surrender happend already 10 years ago. if you have mental problems with this fact in 2008, living in Serbia for a while could cure you - instead of sleeping in a bed which was made by EU citizens.

Kosovo was Serbia. Elections will not change that fact.

“Serbian politicians have to know that everyone who recognizes Kosovo independence will ultimately end up in prison.” Let’s hope it is a promise and not just an empty threat. You listening Mr.Jovanovic?

PS
Cuba, you’re right about the income, but they also have 100% literacy. We would never allow that in the States or we would have our own revolution. Take it from someone who is part of it: public education is how we keep the poor poor and the rich rich.

ZK UK

Serbia was isolated in the 90s due to Russian weakness but Russia would not allow that again. No sanctions and no isolation. The world is on Serbia's side and now that the EU and US have recognised their occupation it has finally allowed Serbia to break free of their chains.

The only people who will remain isolated are the Albanians in Kosovo.

The Balkans rely on each other for economic prosperity so I'd like to see any of Serbia's neighbours impose restrictions on their economy. Isolation my backside!

Cuba

pre 15 godina
