Lucky Serbs getting this offer from one of the most respected statesmen today.
Is this the 'democratic' choice that many Serbs seem to be opting for.
I bet like most of the rest of Europe's people Tadic won't be showing you this.

U.S. allies weary of efforts to drag them into U.S. wars. U.S. imperialism confronts something of a crisis as its partners rethink where their real interests lie. The GDP of the EU now exceeds the U.S. figure. The euro is much stronger than the dollar. People everywhere hate the U.S. government, which they associate with war-promoting lies and general savagery. Bush is out of political capital, domestically and internationally, as Kosovo announces its independence, made possible by U.S. lies and bloody intervention, “threatening,” as the Russians put it, “the foundations of a world order.”

Everything dies eventually. Hitler’s “New Order in Europe,” Japan’s “New Order in East Asia,” George H. W. Bush’s “New World Order” proclaimed as he launched the first Gulf War in 1990. The present world order is profoundly unfair and deserves to be threatened, by the right people, with a better alternative. But the assault on Yugoslavia in 1999 brought nothing positive; rather, more intolerance and suffering, more ethnic cleansing. A new regime emerges, applauded by its American sponsors and most of the EU (but rejected by Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Bulgaria). It is wrapped in smoke, in a legacy of smoldering churches. Smells like the cremation of a world order.

Join EU, Pleese. It was not enough for the UN to whitewash NATO's illegal invasion and occupation of Kosovo, to sit idly by and even justify the ethnic cleansing and barbaric destruction of Serbs and their cultural treasures, or even to stage sham elections designed to give a veneer of legitimacy to the abomination they have created. Now they will allow the appointment of a gangster, murderer, and terrorist as "prime minister" of the occupied province.

It was not enough to launch an illegal war of aggression against Iraq, occupy, and devastate the country, based on specious and outright false "intelligence." Now the exact same accusations are leveled at Iran, and the dogs of war are baying for a sequel.

It was not enough to create and fund a sophisticated fifth column to overthrow Slobodan Milosevic in the fall of 2000. The same recipe was used again in Belarus (where it failed), Georgia (2003), and now Ukraine: propaganda, demonstrations, and threats seek to overturn electoral results. Sure, the ballot box is a false god, but the mob is the falsest.

Any sort of logic, principle, or coherent idea still in existence is under merciless assault of those whose only ambition is to conquer, and only pleasure to destroy. What we are seeing are not "double standards," as some complain, but no standards at all.

It's not that the UN and NATO and EU and the U.S. don't know who Ramush Haradinaj is. After all, they made him: sponsored his terrorist army, promoted him from a local thug into a politician, covered up his murderous activities, and even patched him up when his victims shot back. So, his appointment is deliberate, and the limp protestations of EU's foreign policy commissar are likely just a smokescreen.

Another factor in this travesty is that Kosovo's occupiers are confident the authorities in Belgrade – who had indicted Haradinaj for murder, ethnic cleansing, abduction, and terrorism, to name just a few – would swallow this insult just like every other that has come from the Empire in the past five years. When Serbian leaders get angry, they talk about "human rights" and "European integrations." When Albanian mobs get angry, people die.

Maybe Serbia will be first country who will democratically refuse to join EU, and that will be beginning of something new. Maybe that is why these two social engineers sound so reconciliatory, because that would be something so unexpected: the people of one small impoverished country refusing to give up national identity and to become "European consumers". That could be contagious!
Only when Serbs are allowed to exercise the same right the West gave to others in former Yugoslavia, then the dust will settle. Freedom for Republic of Srpska, freedom for Serbs in northern part of Kosovo, no matter how long it takes! We won't give up, take close look at Serb history. Until then, it will be big NO to EU.

Serbia, its time to move forward. Embrace Europe and human rights, treat your neighbours, as you wish to be treated.
Serbia, you can build a great relationship with Kosovo, all you have to do is accept the Kosovars as equals.

I am glad to see that the responses have been overwhelmingly opposed to their article. The first paragraph reads like a Christiane Amanpour report - emotionally manipulative propaganda and lies. There's not much more that can be said here - except that the British,American and French governments are likely to continue their support of the destruction of Serbia, despite the fall of the Milosevic regime, despite the obvious facts that are arising from Kosovo (no genocide, number of people killed in Kosovo by all sides less than 5000, Serbs and all non-Albanians are at the receiving end of ethnic cleansing/cultural extermination since 1999), despite the fact that support of Balkan Muslims has not prevented Muslim terror in the West (London bombings, Madrid bombings, September 11). Serbia should ignore the EU carrot and turn away from Western Europe, which has for the last 15+ years pursued and still pursues a distinctly anti-Serbia/anti-Serb policy, from former allies France and Britain to old enemies Germany, Austria,

recently i liked one of the posters sent by one Serbian who commented about Serbian Diaspora talking tough and suppotring the radicals,He was complaining that these people are making matters worse for Serbia with their Gung HO attitude, and that these people do not live In Serbia and do not know anything, how living in Serbia is at the moment
This Serbian fellow was trying to get the message across to people that the only way for Serbia is Europe.

As for Turning to Russia, as far as i know a lot of elderly people are dying in Russia as the care system is shambles there and the problem of the (Dodgy Vodka) that makes people go blind.
I realy would think twice if i wanted the support of that sort of country.

Clearly, Moscow is the birthplace of the Antichrist who will subdue Serbia into darkness. Serbs should listen to people like Oli Rehn who know for sure: America's destiny is to fight Evil Antichrist worldwide and prepare the Earth to Jesus Second Coming. If, by accident, there is no Antichrist around, we will find one just to prove, the world needs us.

Let's hope, the Second Coming won't happen. Otherwise Jesus may ask us in person about the sin of devastating entire countries, killing millions of innocent with the goal of self-enrichment... and other minor issues like... like... that 9/11 which looks somewhat stinky, tsssk, tsssk.

johny,

1. The wars of the 1990s were not "started" by Serbia. When the history of the wars are written in years to come, it will be seen as much more complex than that. Many parties contributed to these conflicts and narrow prejudice does not help understanding or resolution.
2. The direction the Serbian people want to take now will be determined on May 11.
3. My basic point is that the EU should either put up or shut up.

you are completely right, Serbia is in Europe, and it will stay that way...whether Serbia enters the EU or not.

by the way, don´t you wonder that it is only and always the same figures publishing their "opinion" here? I mean, Mr. William "unique case" Montgomery? hello? do you see the pattern here?

I ask myself why only an american politician and diplomat writes his "opinion" here...

isn´t that a little bit strange even for you?

why does nobody blame Germany for having good relations to Russia as "turning towards Russia"?

who says that Serbia is turning towards Russia??? Serbia has good relations to Brasil, Argentina, Chile, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, India ...to name only a few...

who says that Serbia is limited to Russia?

do you see what I mean? it´s mere propaganda... and I am critisizing that. by only closing it I would let them create the impression as if everything´s okay, and their lies are right... but it isn´t.

if it let´s you sleep better: Serbia will rise economically, no matter whether entering the EU in 2012 or 2040...if the EU still exists then in the present shape...

Serbia doesn´t need the EU, but the EU needs Serbia ( remember Serbia´s the key-country in the western Balkans )

that´s something Olli Rehn won´t openly admit, I guess.

Only a dog would keep going back to it's master for more beatings. I have nothing against dogs as they are loyal creatures but Serbs are people.

Why would any Serb behave like a dog? EU keeps beating them, thereatening them and feeding them rubbish, yet this same EU expects Serbs to keep coming back for more.

Serbian people are loyal, proud people and it is shameful how they have been treated by no less than their former allies and friends.
Now they have a chance to see who their REAL friends are and that is Russia.

Why would they not turn to Russia? A country which has shown them respect and has backed them all the way.

What is Europe offering Serbia? It won't matter if Serbs decide to become dogs and give in to EU every time. EU will treat them even worse, for if you don't respect yourself you cannot expect anyone else to.

Bottom line. Offer real friendship and respect and Serbia will be glad to join you. Offer them humiliation and they will join the people who will treat them as equals. So if Europe is sincere in wanting Seriba as an equal partner then they must reverse their anti Serb policies.

B92's job is to report the news, not to select what's best for you to read and what isn't...that's PRC government's job. If you don't agree with a certain article or find it insulting, biased, annoying, do as I do, close it. I'm not exactly sure why you disagree with Rehn. Serbia is located in EUROPE, and it should direct itself towards EUROPE, not Russia. Serbia can't play as the big bad guy when it's not that big. Don't repeat the same mistakes as others before you. You don't want all your neighbors and Brussel to turn against you.

"If the EU bureaucrats like Rehn were genuinely worried about Serbia turning to Moscow, they would:
1. Move against the illegally declared independent Kosovo and strictly adhere to Res 1244, the Helsinki Final Act etc.
2. Offer Serbia fast and unconditional full membership of the Union.
3. Declare no confidence in the Hague Tribunal and agitate to have it shut down.

They won't do any of these things and until they do Olli Rehn should shut his mouth.
(Tom O'Donoghue, 3 May 2008 19:12) "

Tom I have a simple question for you. Why should EU do this for the Serbs? It's not doing it for the Croats. As a matter of fact it hasn't unconditionally accepted any of the members. Why should the Serbs be treated so specially? Is it because they started countless wars in the space of one decade?
If what you argue is to be implemented then the recipe of joining the EU would be simple. Every country would follow Serbia's step. Start wars, kill your neighbors, and orient yourself towards Russia. Then the EU would unconditionally reward you for all the wars and crimes you committed and you would be a full EU member.
Serbia wants to be a Russian puppet, well that's their choice. Outsiders can only tell them what comes with it. In the end the choice is theirs.

Oh dear, does anyone really believe this rubbish?

Where did he get "nationalist authoritarianism"? The only authoritarianism we are getting is coming from the EU. We must do as they say otherwise they are talking about isolation and other threats. Russia is saying nothing of the sort. Russia is offering investment and energy security, it is protecting Kosovo for the Serbians while the EU attempts to grab it away.

I don't think this speech will go down well with Serbians who have traditional ties with Russia. However, what I can see is a pattern where they are appealing to the younger Serbian voters who are the easiest to manipulate.

johny,

1. The wars of the 1990s were not "started" by Serbia. When the history of the wars are written in years to come, it will be seen as much more complex than that. Many parties contributed to these conflicts and narrow prejudice does not help understanding or resolution.

The GDP of the EU now exceeds the U.S. figure. The euro is much stronger than the dollar. Everything dies eventually. Hitler’s “New Order in Europe,” Japan’s “New Order in East Asia,” George H. W. Bush’s “New World Order” proclaimed as he launched the first Gulf War in 1990. The present world order is profoundly unfair and deserves to be threatened, by the right people, with a better alternative. let´s just start using our brains! not falling for the shameful attempt of bullying free voters with horror-scenario´s means to "turn towards Russia"? have I understood you right? excuse me, not you, of course...that article...

well then, WHO for heaven´s sake says that Serbia is not european??? who says that not accepting blackmail means not being outside of europe? that´s simply not the case!

you are completely right, Serbia is in Europe, and it will stay that way...whether Serbia enters the EU or not.
is Norway an isolated country because of not being a EU-member?

is Switzerland isolated, and non-european? remember, Switzerland is not a EU-member either!

what should we think about those ineffectual attempts to create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation?

by the way, don´t you wonder that it is only and always the same figures publishing their "opinion" here?
