For a great, prosperous, truly independent Serbia - never having to 'bow' to any dictates, EU membership is absolutely a no-go, in fact suicidal!!

Why can't Serbians comprehend this...??

what system are you living in? just look on the actual economical figures of Serbia - how could you compare the economy of your country with that of states like Switzerland or Sweden? economical reality is not a cheesy song contest : ))

Sweden IS in the EU. -
Maybe !

The signing of the SAA will attract any kind of capital. Nobody would like to invest in a "black hole".-
Four Western European countries that have chosen not to join the EU : Iceland, Liechtenstein ,Norway and Switzerland .
Plus...All countries of the CIS are 'Black Holes'...

Most new Non-Euro EU members are experiencing massive problems, most of the countries outside EU are experiencing massive growth!

Most Asian, Latin American and Mid-East plus of course CIS countries are interested in massive investments in a friendly European country.

The comments on this thread are simple laughable.

Sweden is the EU. Switzerland has bilateral treaties with the EU which are far more comprehensive than the SAA - Switzerland has to implement many EU rules without any influence. The same goes for the other non-EU european countries (west of the balkans).

Johnboy - you may be correct that EU regulations are not ideal, but that is not even an issue here. Do you honestly think Serbian regulations are less cumbersome. And you fail to appreciate the point of a large free market. Serbia alone has 10 million consumers. The EU has over 400 million. Russia may 'like' Serbia, but they want a return, and they want access to the whole EU market, which is in general far richer than Serbia. For an investment, EU v Serbia is a no brainer.

fas - Yes political parties in the west generally have similar programs (but no one hates Serbia for being different, although I would claim that serbian parties do not have a program). Generally parties converge at the centre ground, and fight for voters there. It may not be very exciting, or provide much difference, but it provides stability and continuity, and it is that which allows prosperity (unstable nations rarely attain fast economic development).

This man makes no sense whatsoever. Why would the Russians want Serbia to join the eu when it can conduct low-cost business with Serbia directly without eu restrictions? With the rest of the Balkans getting dragged into nato and the eu, Serbia is obtaining a unique status and can profit from playing both sides. Apparently, Tadic has been taking lessons from the clintons: say anything to keep power or get elected. Actions speak louder than words.

Tadic is an architect.

Definition of ‘architect’: architect is a man who was not man enough to be an engineer and not sufficiently gay to be a decorator.

Tadic, is an opportunist who is not man enough to declare himself nationalist and not intellectually brave enough to be a liberal and acknowledge that Kosovars ae not part of the Serbian nation- as the liberal democracies of the EU have done.

Now he is in trouble because the opportunism has limited resources- sooner or latter he will have to decide what he wants to become- as a man.

"Signing agreements just before an election is not giving the people a chance to voice their opinion on the issue. "

Thats €Uropean standards you know, they are learning fast.

Unpopular things are discussed behind closed doors and secrecy and imposed through the backdoor, OR you can (if you get a chance) vote as many times as you like until the "right" result is given.

In €U you also have the right to vote between 2 or more identical "alternatives" with the same agenda, in Serbia it´s quite the same except for one option (and thats among other things, why they hate us) the SRS and until recently a man that has grown to what every free people like to vote for: Kustunica.

is this what (DS)democracy principles are based on?
Mr.tadic - some of your ideas were good, but they are nulified by your disrespect of the people and the processes of an 'honorable' democracy.

Nice to see Tadic hasn't put all his eggs in the EU basket. The Serbian electorate need to hear more about their economic prospects how about some 'creative' alternatives to the EU. The democratic forces have only one economic policy and thats the EU or nothing.

EU regulations restrict capital investments from outside...

Thus signing the SAA means signing into a life-long bondage...!
Sweden hasn't signed, nor has Switzerland...aren't they attracting FDI??
