Joe,

No, I am not a property speculator, thank God. I go because of interest in the region and a liking for the Serbs. I also like others in the region but I find the Serbs are rather like the Irish. They have also been very badly abused in recent years.

Tom,

A lot of Irish were involved recently in Eastern Europe in real estate deals. I am just wondering if you are doing the same in Belgrade.
In Budapest the Irish arrived as the latest wave of speculators at the end of a long boom. Sure prices are still low compared to Dublin and they thought that in a short time they will make a lot of money. They bought apartments at top prices almost fully mortgaged. They planned to rent them out and the rent was supposed to cover the monthly mortgage payment. Miscalculation: Hungarians can't afford such high rents.
Those Europeans, who bought condos in New York did extremely well.

No to the EU, no to NATO! Full support to DSS and Mr Kostunica. Never into the EU that supports war criminals and yesterday the EU proved to be war criminal’s supporter.

Joe,

Unlike you, I acually happen to know something of Serbia and look forward to my next visit in two weeks. You have obviously bought into the right-wing Bush agenda in your adopted homeland. That is fine, but it means switching off your brain and your concern for humanity. Yes, I respect Hugo Chavez and I believe Russia recently had a democratic election. I have never referred to Iran in any of my posts - I have mixed feelings.

But I have great affection for Serbia and its people, some of whom I actually know.

Can not the Serb republic prosper and advance W/O the EU?
yes it can,
When Norway can, China can, India, Russia and Brazil can, even Serbia can!!
EU is just a small part of the whole...
Open your economy, invite investments and see the money pouring in!

At the same time, you have pride and most importantly, these same Kosovars will come back to you begging for Readmission...

i took my vote from tadic and now kostunica can have it. for a couple of days after the betrayal became obvious, and as i became a former ds voter, i even considered voting srs, but i dont think there's any need for that, and i really don't subscribe to quite a few srs policies. although no doubt they'll lead the government, with important dss participation, i'm fine with that.
now,

Good luck to Serbia

Kostunica thinks that Serbia will be in EU by 2014-2015.
Well, if Kostunica stays in power then Israel and North African countries will be in EU before Serbia, and who knows when it will happen.
I do agree with John Brown "Kostunica has done as much damage to Serbia as Milosevic had ".

Tom,

Since you have a weakness for such "democratic" counties as Russia, Venezuela and Iran I am not surprised that the real democratic countries of NATO are not democratic for you. You have your own criteria.

While Croatia and Albania areslowly integrating in the modern and most powerfull institutions Serbia and Kostunica are still representing Milosevic ideas.
Nothing more to say except that Kostunica will not be object of the isolation but the poor Serbs.

NATO democratic??? So why did this alliance bomb civilians, hospitals and TV stations in Serbia in 1999 without any legal mandate? NATO is many things, but it is most definitely not democratic.

John Brown,

Are you for real? Kostunica is the best politician in Serbia, the best statesman, and the best man to defend Serbia's interests. I guess defedning a country's territorial integrity, refusing to join clubs which show no respect for your borders, or military organizations who bomb you illegally for 78 days and destroy infrastructure in order to help terrorist movements inside your country secede...I guess this all seems like something crazy to you. But to us Serbs, Kostunica is doing exactly what we want him to do. And that is, defending the interests of Serbia, and not working for outsiders like so many other parties!
Kostunica is a patriot, so please stop with your anti-Serb drivel and get your head out of the sand.

Serbia should follow an example of my country Australia. Gradually we have moved away from trading with US and Europe predominantly and now we export to China and India more than to the whole of US and Europe together. And the future never looked brighter.

I have read some poor comments on this site and yours is definitely one of them!

To say Kostunica has done as much damage as Milosevic is a shocking statement. Because he is proud of his nation and not prepared to succumb to the US dollars or Euro's makes him vilified? Serbia does not need to choose EU over the east - why should it? What is possibly in it for Serbia to join the back stabbing selfish brigade that is the EU? It has fuel, it has agriculture, it has industry and it can do business with all countries - without joining the greedy EU. Unlike a lot of former eastern bloc countries and the poorer western nations Serbia will not sell its soul for the lure of the dollar or the Euro.

Only when Kosovo is rightfully reinstated as part of Kosovo should Serbia begin constructive dialogue.

Everyone knows that Hardinaj was guilty - but he was freed because nobody would testify - a complete mockery of the tribunal!

By your comments, I assume that Milosevic was 'not guilty' too because he died without anything being proven - or are you blinkered with your Albanian friends?

Ratko, UK

pre 16 godina

As I have said on numerous occasions - does Serbia really need to join the EU? The EU is only there to 'bully' and force smaller nations into doing what they want. Serbia will be better off in loose confederation with these EU states - but retaining control of it's own destiny and proud identity - something that a lot of EU countries have sold their soul for by succumbing to the powers of the US and EU?

On a separate note - is Novak Djokovic oen o the worlds finest sportsmen and ambassadors? He is a proud Serb and understanding of his roots...the Serbia nation applauds you for your moral boosting visits and speeches (and Milorad Cavic too). Utmost repsect to you both in this modern era where money talks and sportsmen forget their identity - not you two though. Well done!

John Brown

pre 16 godina

Kostunica has done as much damage to Serbia as Milosevic had in the '90s. Yesterday we witnessed two very positive events that had to do with Albanians, Croatians and Kosovars. Albania and Croatia were officially invited by NATO to join this important democratic and military body, which will become true after a year. Kosovars celebrated, rightfully, the release of their former Prime Minister from the Hague Tribunal, who could not be found guilty on crimes against humanity (against Serbian civilians). These events show that Croatia, Albania and Kosovo are on the right path towards a better future for their citizens, while Serbia has found itself at a dangerous cross-road. I truly hope that Serbian people will stand up and chose EU over East, hail the development in the neighboring countries, especially of the newest nation - Kosovo, and join them in moving towards EU, towards a bright future.

How can you Serbs not understand that the EU hates you? They have allowed you to be bombed, invented crimes, and have created show trials to torment you. Stop being so masochistic. Show some back bone, send in the troops allowed by res. 1244 into the enclaves, and take more severe diplomatic action.

Koštunica said that Serbia’s measures had slowed down recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral independence, and that filing a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice would be the best response to countries recognizing independence.
