"But you Albanians cling to every recognition that you receive, 35 is hardly of proportion to brag about, esp when 33 out of that 35 are really the only ones that count(by this I mean have done so of their own free will)the rest are strictly"lip service""

So France and Sarkozy were bullied? Germany, Britain, Italy, Japan, all of them bullied?

Face the facts: There was some pressure, of course, but the ultimate decision to recognize Kosovo rested with these countries. Who has recognized Abkhazia or Transnistria, after all?

35 countries out of 200 have recognized Kosovo so far, true. That's not bad, since that includes seven of the members of the G-8 and most of the member states of the European Union and NATO. The rest of the world will come to share this, slowly or otherwise.

I can't help but notice that each time a country recognizes "Kosova's" illegal independance, that there are numerous comments from citizens of that very country who oppose and are disappointed in the decision that their government made in doing this. But you Albanians cling to every recognition that you receive, 35 is hardly of proportion to brag about, esp when 33 out of that 35 are really the only ones that count(by this I mean have done so of their own free will)the rest are strictly"lip service"
By the way- how is life there since you have become independent???? I guess you are all enjoying the surge of money and jobs that have been showered upon you by all those countries who have recognized you- oh but wait, I guess your biggest gift will be the "arms" the US will be sending, just the thing to improve your quality of life- wake up everyone and stop writing all these pathetic thank-you notes on here, all anyone does is laugh at the naiveness of you- When you have companies investing money in your area(creating jobs)when you rid yourselves of the corrupt lifestyle that you lead and when you can support yourselves without handouts from the rest of the world- then you have every right to say thank-you, until then I best think that your time would be better spent worrying about the mess that you are in rather than keeping up with this stupid little game of"I won" I welcome the comments from Albanians to please prove me wrong, but I truly doubt there will be any because everything I have said is true

Kosovo is hardly an independant nation.
Even calling it 'supervised independance' is a stretch.

Palestine has 95 UN nations recognizing it and how far has that gotten it?

Kosovo is a sub-national ethnic region trying to separate itself from a parent state.

'By Law'/'De Jure', however, it remains part of Serbia but with full autonomy.

This will only be settled thru direct negotiations.

Marco,

Very interesting comment.
But first, please do not equate Norwegians with the Norwegian goverment will you. :)
Just like millions of others in Norway, I personally do not agree with the governments recognition of a so-called independent Kosovo.
Anti-US sentiment in Norway is pretty high, so the recognition is not due to some typical puppet problem either. Rather, I think you summed up the problem with the word naive.

The state department said in one of it's statements today, that: "It was decided by the King in Council today to recognise the Republic of Kosovo as an independent state.

The Norwegian Government underscores that the guarantees provided regarding minority rights, religious and cultural heritage, the protection of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo and the principles of the rule of law are considered to be binding under international law in accordance with the declaration of independence of 17 February 2008.

Diplomatic relations will be established."

The foreign minister is a decent man, but even if he views the same problem as you, that is, of how Kosovo-Serbs have suffered for so long, he sees the solution in changing status quo because of it, not despite it.
For better AND worse, Norwegians in general really do believe in universalism through UN, and in the case of the UN's actions in former Yugoslavia, I notice that Norwegians are simply unaware of the problems the UN (especially pressure by NATO) has caused for so many civilians.

Bottom line is, it IS naive to believe that a internationally supervised - some sort of international force, will be able to provide peace and security, not to mention work and prosperity, for Kosovo-Serbs. Though that is what they believe. Norwegian governments have for long supported, and will continue to support democratic projects in former Yugoslavia, a number of them even involves cooperation and fiscal support of the Serbian Church.

Ana 35 is far more than 2 months ago, so this is a progression in what ever way you look at it. So just because America pushes them does not mean they have to, same thing happened in Croatia and in Slovenia you need someone to lead and US is taking charge on this.

And I am a world citizen I have same citizenship as you, Serbian, as well as EU and USA I was born in center of your capital my dear.

South America + Muslim countries + Africa will fallow by the end of the year, you will be quiet suppressed.

Be careful choosing your friends you can keep sneaks as pets but they can always bite, so Russia will bite you soon when they have no use for you.

I would hope you vote wisely in may.

Oslo said that Kosovo should guarantee human and minority rights, as well as religious and cultural heritage.

For the past nine years life has been hell for minorities in Kosovo (especially for those in the enclaves). Do the Norwegians truly believe that, because they say that the rights of minorities should not be violated, the K-Albanians will treat the K-Serbs with dignity and respect? How naïve....

Both recognitions were pretty much expected - South Korea particularly after Japan. Though I'm surprised Norway didn't recognize earlier.

Still, that means little more than a symbolic gesture, as recognition is one thing; actual aid may be a completely different matter. And if people here are equating recognition with foreign aid, that means there is some sort of expectation that the list of international handouts is responsible for Kosovo's growth. Growth and prosperity can only come within. Recognition means an acknowledgement of sovereignty. It does not automatically translate into "I'm going to give you lots of money".

I also note that every state aside from Albania and the US recognized with reserved enthusiasm. Most of the recognitions came with the explanation that there was no better solution. The expected applause is still rather muted and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

I can't wait for Serbia to recognize Kosova/o. Not that I care much, but I think it would be a huge leap forward for the region and the people that live there. Leaving the past to the history books, and building the future for the living.

Why was it not separated by Russia and China?
I wonder if it is better to be called a puppet state by the Serbs or be North Korea. That is a conundrum.

So far the countries that have recognised Kosova as an indenpendant state has reached the number 35. The number is growing day after day, this is a fact that nobady can deny. If it continous like this, within a year the majority of UN member states will recognise Kosova. According to the secret services (CIA), Serbia will recognise Kosova by the end of 2009.

If US can't force Romania or Cyprus to recognize Kosovo, od you honestly think that it can force developed and strong countries such as Japan, Korea, Australia, Canada???

Could it be that these countries realise that, despite the fact that there was no UN resolution (because of Russia) the only sustainable and possible solution is the independence of Kosovo?

Benny

Norway also formally recognized Kosovo today. There is talk that Spain together with Portugal will recognize it in the near future as well now that the elections are over in Spain. The Czech Republic is expected to recognize it next week.

Another huge success for Kosova. South Korea is a technological and economic giant, and it's recognition means that many more countries in doubt will follow. Norway also recognized, but I don't see B 92 mentioning it. There is no stopping the process, every day countries are recognizing the new reality. Thank You South Korea!

Another American vote. How many votes do Americans have in the world? So far 33. But not many left though. No really, if we want to look into this objectively then only 2 nations have recognised independent Kosovo so far, Americans and Albanians. The rest are just following the line of the least resistance so as not to upset the Americans who are falling down rapidly and we definitely do not want to disturb their falling, do we?
