A very important Greek said some simple words which all freedom loving Greeks, both the ones living in Greece and those of the diaspora, must live by and put into action. His words still ring true today.
"Listen my friend...Macedonia is the lung of Greece and without it the rest of Greece is doomed to die. Let us rush to save our Macedonia, while there is still time."
Pavlos Melas, the legendary Macedonomachos.
In July, 1904 under the alias Captain Mikis Zezas, he reentered Macedonia with a small unit of Greek soldiers and fought against the Bulgarian units of VMRO until October 13, 1904 when he was killed by the Turks in the village Statista.
After his death, Greek efforts became more intense, resulting in the interception of Bulgarian efforts, specially in West and Central Macedonia, which composed part of Greece, after the Balkan Wars.
He is considered to be a symbol of Greek Struggle for Macedonia and many of his personal effects can be seen in the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle in Thessaloniki and Pavlos Melas Museum in Kastoria.
The village with coordinates 40° 42' N 021° 16' E has since been renamed Melas in his honour.
We have our freedom today because of the brave sacrifices of our beloved and respected Hellenic Armed Forces.
God be with you and give you victory.
