@Rosebud:
Jim-UK:
My arguments may sound naive to you but they are based on 21st. century facts: Russia left no troops in Kosovo. Russias interest in the balkans in this century is same as in the 19th century. And it is not called serbs but land, as close as possible to the see. As for Cyprus, they will, together with Spain and Slovakia be the last members of EU, to recognize. Latest by the end of the year. The fact the Milosevic Clan had bank accounts there or that they have the same religion will not stop them.

I think the Russians are happy about Bush's desperate attempt to intimidate the K-Serbs. This news may be just enough to push the Radicals into power and Russia gets its Balkan base of operations and its proxy behind enemy lines.

- Russia is using Serbia etc.

If somebody is being used here, it is Albanians. You might thank "Dearest Uncle Bush" as much as you want, but the true reasons for US support were clearly and openly spelled by US senators (Biden, Liberman) : to help Muslims to have their state in Europe to improve negative US image in Muslim countries. I think, US would love to have another little war in Balkans, to step in on a side of Muslims - as they did in Bosnia and Kosovo - and placate themselves as impartial force, helping Muslims in Europe only to keep pounding them in Middle East.

If you guys - I mean Albanians here - like to think of Us as your "friend", oh boy, are you deluded...despite all the loud proclamations, US have no friends, it has interests.
It increasingly looks to me that US support will bring you only more turmoil and war, not more peace and prosperity. Simply because it appears to better suit US interests in Balkans. Even if there were no Serbs left in Kosovo, I ma pretty sure US would start formeting troubles in other parts - Presevo Valley, parts of Macedonia etc. They already did it not so long time ago. And selling weapons is just another proof of it. As somebody correctly pointed out, you can't eat bullets, you'd have to shoot them. On whom - quite clearly, not Europeans. Serbs again. And that means more war. So forget your dreams about "peaceful and prospering" Kosovo...US does not want it - they need loyal attack dogs to keep things messed up in the heart of Europe. You sure you want to enjoy this role ?

I wouldn't be surprised if Halliburton has its fingers in this deal.

Serbia should invite Russia over for a military exercise in a confined space and time including air command forces as a demonstration peacekeeping force for Balkan demilitarization as opposed to a Balkan combat force.

Rosebud I think your comments are somewhat naive and even ignorant to say that Russia is using Serbia and the Serbs are using Kosovo Serbs. There is a reason for the strong unity between Serbs and Kosovo Serbs and that's the 'Serbian' bit. I think I'm correct in stating that for Serbs Kosovo is Serbia and therefore any Kosovo Serbs are Serbian, see what I mean.

As for the Russian connection, it's not the government I believe that will demand support for Serbia continues but the people and the church. Serbs are from the same Slavic family as Russians. The Russian people will never allow the government to walk away from Serbia. Indeed it was the Russian people that forced their government to war with Turkey in the 19th Century in defence of the Serbs who were at the time being butchered by the Albanians, then mercenaries to the Turks,

I think unless the US withholds the weapons for the Albanians who still make territorial claims on Montenegro, Macedonia, more of Serbia and Greece I think Russia might have to step up to the block and show her support for her family in more practical ways and this could lead anywhere.

Afteral, only ten years ago the Russians were prepared to go all the way for Cyprus against Turkey as certain statements then indicated when the S-300's were ordered. Make no mistake, the weapons go to the Albanians things get notched up a gear. I know for a fact Greek Cypriots, feeling a kinship to the Serbs, will already be thinking of heading to Belgrade as they did in 1999.

And already Belgrade is already quite wrongly taking the blame on the British media for what's happening in Kosovo, they even reported that the Serbian army was building up on the border with Kosovo after the troubles in Mitrovica, more lies to justify their future aggression I believe.

Lines are being drawn in the belief that one side will back down and I think that's a grave miscalculation on behalf of the US and other Western nations.

It is time to stop this dangerous game.

Kosovo is a part of Serbia until Serbia says otherwise, therefore the US is arming an organisation that has a convicted terrorist at its head which may well find itself using those arms against Serbs.

1244, 1160 are very clear.

It would be more legal for the Russians to arm Serbia than it is for the US to arm the Albanians in Kosovo.

The next step could well be an arms race if this goes ahead.

The legality of the UDI is very much in question. Even given the UDI, the actual status of Mitrovica is still very unclear. If 1244 has been finished with, then it is in order for Serbian police to go into Kosovo. If 1244 still applies, then the supply of arms to Kosovo is criminal, and if the weapons are used, there will be every justification for the US government to be sued in open court for any criminal damage caused by the illegal supply of these weapons.

I like this Rogozin.

It's time to up the ante. It's time for Russia to supply Serbs with their best anti-aircraft system, their best fighter jets, and some of their finest missiles to boot. Let's remind the Yanks whose land they are illegally occupying and that they are not welcome. Let's show them what awaits them in the future. Enough is enough.

Russia has been "called out"! This is a critical moment and Russia cannot afford to back down. Just remember that the Russians can't be more "Serbian" then the Serbs themselves, however Serbia cannot effectively resist without direct Russian support so it is time to step up. If not just except domination and start fixing up your pretty cages.

One thing is clear:
Russia is using Serbia which on the other hand is using K-Serbs. One might argue that Kosovars are also being used by US and their allies. Well of course they are being used, but Kosovars know it and would rather be used by US then abused by Serbia. Serbs on the other hand do not have a clue where Kostunica is leading them. They are turning into the dark spot of the future Europian political map. Russia's only interest in the region was to have one country left for them, Serbia was the logical and natural choice. If Russia would have really been interested in helping Serbia they would have never withdrawn their forces from Kosova, they would have actually stationed them in the North.

"The United States president yesterday said his country will deliver arms to the Kosovo Albanians, since this will, according to the White House website, "strengthen U.S. security and promote peace in the world"."

Fortunately this character will be gone relatively soon. However, there is still enough time to do too much long term damage and it remains to be seen that his successor will be any better (at least it cannot be worse, or can it?). The world has not been this unpeaceful since WWII.

""I have spoken to the NATO secretary-general with a proposal to hold an urgent session, so as to discuss the American plans for an arms shipment for Kosovo," Rogozin told Russia's Itar-Tass news agency."

Russian logic and rational. A true blessing these days in a world going more crazy day by day.

""They said the weapons will be used in the fight against terrorism. At the same time, the current Kosovo authorities are former terrorists. How do you fight terrorism by sending arms to former terrorists," wondered the Russian diplomat."

I guess the whole world except the US and the Kosovo Albanias thinks this way (even the EU cannot agree with this, or can they?). How do you know they are former terrorist? Unless they have publicly denounced their past they are still terrorists and should be treated accordingly.

""Washington is in a hurry, it breaks all international agreements according to which Kosovo has no right to form its own armed forces," another, this time unnamed, Russian source was quoted by the agency."

Kosovo will need it, because one day Serbia will take control of Kosovo again. From an American point of view it would much more sense to build the missle facility in Kosovo. It is closer to Iran than The Czech Republic. This being in a hurry is very worrysome. Something is brewing and one has to wonder what will happen next. Very scary times are we living in.

Russians are telling the US a different story. In fact, Russia only loses and it will get humiliated by not recognizing the new Independent Republic.
According to the Russian daily, Russia at some point is going to ask Serbia for an exit strategy, perhaps even pressuring to accept the supervised independence, an anonymous Russian official was quoted.

Putin's stance that Independence would be a possible under the international law, sends a clear message to Serbia that Russia's foreign policy cannot be directed from Belgrade but vice versa.

In a short term,I foresee a possible ukranization of Serbia where political ideology would be rifted between the west supporters/opponents and east/Russian supporters/opponents.

Politically, Serbia will be viewed as an unstable country. Foreign investors will not invest. It would destroy Serbia's economy as it is doing right now as we speak. Interest rates, market and trade is low and losing track. It's possible that Serbia could plunge into a deep recession while majority of its people will rely on their government welfare policies. And, perhaps, this would lead to a real democratic revolution in Serbia by starting with recognition of Republic of Kosova and these two countries establishing diplomatic ties in the near future.

At the same time, whatever happens, I foresee a strongly fruitful start on development of Kosova's economy!
Additionally,The department of internal affairs and intelligence under jurisdiction of the Interior Ministry with the amendment of the new constitution will grant Kosova's government to establish its Intelligence Agency which it will be monitored and controlled under the Justice Ministry.

The need of Kosova to establish its Intelligence Agency was been voiced since January of 2007, but unfortunately only a small scale interior intelligence was allowed to be established under the auspices of UNMIK.

Due to the possible attacks by serbs and Serbia's organizations listed in the US Department of State, the urge to establish a strong Intelligence Agency for the new state is more than welcome.

The MOSSAD type Intelligence is one of the strongest appeals in the Thaci government.

The idea of Intelligence Agency has won a wide support among Western Nations.

I find no logic in this. The first official "transaction" between Washington and Pristina is one of selling weapons. Kosovo is the poorest, most undeveloped region in all of Europe. Unemployment is somewhere between 40 - 50%, educational standards are incredibly problematic, and reports of malnourishment among sectors of society are now being reported by NGOs.

So what does Washington do?

We send guns to poor people.

You can't eat bullets.

Moreover, if Kosovo is going to be protected and secured by KFOR for the foreseeable future, AND if Kosovo is allegedly surrounded by friendly states of which Thaci wants to establish "good, friendly relations", what do they need the weapons to defend themselves against?

Also, the justification of giving weapons "to fight against terrorism" is now such a hackneyed excuse devoid of any real reason. I mean unless al Qaida is now setting up shop somewhere in Kosovo, I see no reason why this business deal was made.

Poverty + guns = no peace at all. Take a look at the Middle East and Africa if you don't believe me.

Hey Russian Diplomat You said former terrorist. There is no such thing. Once a terrorist always a terrorist. Disappointed on that comment.

"strengthen U.S. security and promote peace in the world".

Brainwashed American have seen this in the past.

Its not going to work Bushy.

Promoting peace? Sure why not give terroists weapons. That will bring peace? Bush must be forecasting a war!

Thank god someone has good judgment in all of this and is not afraid to tell like it is.

I think the Russians are happy about Bush's desperate attempt to intimidate the K-Serbs. This news may be just enough to push the Radicals into power and Russia gets its Balkan base of operations and its proxy behind enemy lines.

@Rosebud:

I have no idea what you're talking about. Could you at least improve your sentence structure and grammar so I can reply in a succint manner.
