A new approach to religion in Serbia is needed because the analytic frameworks that have traditionally explained inter religion conflicts—and prescribed policies to prevent them—are largely irrelevant to religion conflicts within states. All proponents of religion agree that its primary goal is spiritual education of individuals. However, consensus breaks down over precisely what threats the religion practices should be protected from. Proponents of the ‘narrow’ concept of understanding of religion focus on violent threats from states to religion community or, as UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan puts it, ‘the protection of communities and individuals from internal violence’. Serbia in this case has to move forward and to separate state and religion once and forever which will enable them to move forward in a secular and democratic society. The age of myths about preserving the identity by violating other religions has ended but Serbian government is not present there.
