From very shortly after I first heard the news of the assassination of Zoran Đinđić, I have been profoundly influenced by how little effect it seemed to have on Serbian political expression.
Irrespective of the views that people might have had of his political vision, the murder of a head of state should have resulted in an overwhelming sense of national unity.
My condolences.

Zoran Đinđić was a real hero of our time. It's very sad that there are no such man in our country.

Right thing was said, that "this was the only guy that could have saved Kosovo".

It's such a pity Serbia has to "remember" Đinđić rather than be "represented" by him. Serbia could have been in a much better place today were he not assassinated 5 years ago, I have absolutely no doubt. The best thing now is to keep his legacy and his efforts alive in a new generation of Serbs who pick up where his efforts were so tragically terminated.

I feel so sad for the people of Serbia and so ashamed of the European Union which Zoran Đinđić saw as the future of Serbia. He was a great leader who truly believed in a positive future for Serbia in Europe and he died for his beliefs.

Today, five years later it is appalling to look at the situation in Serbia and realize how much of that situation can be blamed on that very same European Union because of its illogical and mindless policies towards Serbia. Time after time serbs have been asked to swallow crap and each time been told to ”leave the past and move on” just to be offered another spoonful the next day. Each and every week you hear statements from European officials that are so counter-productive to democratic progress and European integration you wonder if he is paid off by Nikolic.

Europe has truly let down the pro-european forces of Serbia, and they have let down Zoran Đinđić. A few months from now Nikolic may well be the new premier of Serbia.

Some year ago I commented on this site insisting that Europe was a friend of Serbia. Today the expression ”With friends like these, who needs enemies” seems all to true.

I so would like to see Serbia join the EU. I wish I could tell all Serbs who has dreamt of Europe not to give up on that dream, not to punish themselves because of the mistakes and ignorance of european politicians. To ask their forgivness. To convince them to swallow yet another spoonful.

But it all just gives me a bad taste in the mouth.

Zoran Đinđić was a man you should truly be proud of. Bless his soul and his family.

Djindic did not do any significant rebuilding of Serbia's infrastructure and he did start selling Serbia's companies at firesale prices. Those after him just continued along his lines.

He was very favored by Germany, where he was educated.

Unemployment also began its 7 year (starting in 2000 after he took over) increase.

Things would have been similar in Serbia to what they are now.

Well said. DS has been dragging its citizens all these years with EMPTY promises. And come election time, all they did to win is just scare its own citizens by saying, "vote for us or face isolation." Just recently their masks came off. I am pretty sure they realize their time is up.

Sorry, but no sympathy here... Zoran Djindjic was a supporter of Karadzic and Mladic as well as the Serb war effort in Croatia and Bosnia.
He was nothing more than a pragmatic politician who jumped ship as the Serb refugees started rolling into Belgrade and it was clear that Serbia was losing the wars.

rip zorane.
i was critical of djindjic, but i supported him as well. it's natural and normal, unless you want to have a cult of personality and not normal politicians. with his death of course many things changed and many things are idealized because of that tragedy and the attack on the man and on serbia. the criminals that shot him killed a serving democratically elected prime minister which means that they attacked the state itself and both attacks are unforgivable under any circumstances.
i used to be a ds voter, i voted ds all my life, ever since i got the right to vote. djindjic was very unpopular when he died, the party was ranked very low. it was so low that even with the outrage and hundreds of thousands of people who showed up for the funeral ds got swept off the scene in 2004 elections. which btw dinkic forced on zivkovic and brought kostunica to power. this same dinkic who is now doing the dirty work for ds, and who knows who else. tadic led a level headed and wise party policy when he threw jovanovic out and took the ds to levels it could not dream about four years ago. but now tadic has blundered badly over kosovo and it’s a real threat for the ds that jovanovic could be back. the ds has peaked and it will now start its decline back to where djindjic left it. i am no longer that party's supporter or voter although i was and in good faith for many, many years and last time during tadic's reelection. ds tripped and fell where it matters the most and that is the country's very survival and i truly regret that they did but it is unforgivable in my eyes. but i will not just be disappointed with the ds and stay home in the elections. i will vote to punish them the best way i know how, because this ds today that violates the constitution must not have any role in the government. the danger is not in the past like they try to brainwash us, its in the future, in having parties in power that do not care about the law, the country's borders or any of the vital and existential issues.

This was the only guy that could have saved Kosovo. Apart from that if he hadnt been killed Serbia would have become the best place to be in the Balkans. Shame it took his death for the police to investigate the criminal gangs of the S. underworld.

I was one of those who criticised the Djindjic government and the man himself.

He sometimes seemed too determined to drive through reforms, without appearing to notice how these reforms were on ordinary people.

Oh how times have changed. Now I see how much Djindjic was / is needed by Serbia.
His replacement at DS Tadic is just too soft in his dealings with Kostunica.

May he rest in peace and I hope his family finds peace also.
