Mr. Montgomery, there is one big mistake in tour text. IT WAS NATO THAT WAS FIRST ESTABLISHED, BEFORE THE WARSAW PACT AND IT WASCHURCHIL WHO DECLARED THE COLD WAR IN HIS SPEACH IN FOULTON. NATO WAS AND IT CONTINUES TO BE AGGRESIVE TOWARDS RUSSIA. WE ARE NOT NAIVE.

"Aggressive Russia", "Croatia, for example, looks at the growing strength of the Radicals in Serbia and listens to their rhetoric extolling the virtues of a Greater Serbia" -- You are creating a world in your own imaginations that doesn't exist, just so that you do what you want to who you want.

I am an American, Mr. Montgomery, frankly you and the US State Department scare me a hell of a lot more than the Russians do.

Rask obviously is not following events.
When it comes to anti-satellite technology, it's not a new one. The United States and the Soviet Union tested anti-satellite technology in the 1980s, and the United States shot down one of its orbiting satellites in 1985.

The US shot down their satellite some weeks after China sucessful attempt.

Most East Europeans, locked behind the Iron Curtain saw the end of communism as liberatiton and were happy to join NATO as an organization that will guarantee their security. For the Serbs, who under Tito were alowed to travel almost freeely around the world, the end of communism was perceived as losses of territory, national humiliation and heavy visa regime. No wander they see the newest history in a very different way. But the West must not spare effords to assure them that all attempts to challange the new status que will be not only futile, but counterproductive for them, but that if they bet on strict applyence of the Deyton Treaty and the Ahtisari plan, all the Serbs, in and out of Serbia may soon becone citizens of the EU ... and live happily ever after.

Serbs must strenghen themselves, without russian help, because gospoda putin and medvedev will never help them, as they keep their oil money(so called "stabfond") in foreign banks and they will never cut oil supply as they don't want the money to be frozen there. All the oligarchs still own their componies and still earn billions and invest them in Chelsea, Arsenal or Schalke04 and they don't wanna loose their investments either.
But russians as nation will always be with you, our brothers!

Russians are acting agressivelly. There is even a meeting on March 13th with the leaders of breakaway regions in former Soviet Union. Many claim that they have even better case then Kosova to achieve independence, like South Ossetians. They were given to Georgia as a gift to his people by Stallin. But, should it really matter that Stallin, the Georgian, simply gave them to Georgia? It shouldn't. Majority of Ossetians live in Russia, others are minority, no right to selfdertermiantion. Or that's how it used to be. But now? Who knows. One thing is for sure, Russians are agressive.

"Never" is tricky, but for Serbia I am sure that will never enter NATO and EU whatever party might run the country today or in 100 years' time (if NATO and EU will exist at that point). The "friendly" pushing from the West produces revulsion in Serbs. Serbs would never accept to be treated like Eastern European countries or the nations from ex-Yugoslavia who are begging to enter the club: the Serbian nation has always been free in judging and is not accustomed throughout the history to be tutored by the others. Just a quick look through history will make you learn: the Ottomans, the Austro-Hungarians, the Nazis - they all lost with Serbs. And in this unthankful position has placed themeslves today EU and USA.

Who honestly thinks a war with Russia is going to manifest? Russia and Europe are so economically interdependent that to go to war would destroy the economies of both sides. At this point, Russia doesn't need the Red Army to threaten its would-be opponents: they just have to shut the gas off to make their point. How is NATO going to respond to that? Therefore, continuing to think that Russia is the Soviet Union is not only foolhardy but also out of date. If the US needs some country or region to cast as the potential "enemy", thus justifying military build up, look elsewhere besides Russia. Besides, with all the expansion of NATO, we still could not get NATO to act in Iraq, and we're barely able to get them motivated in Afghanistan. The only reason for countries like Albania and Macedonia joining NATO is to function as free-riders. They need NATO exponentially more than NATO needs them.

Biljana

would like to express my huge disappointment over the lack of real support for the country of macedonia. if you are going to honestly give your support you will inform the minister of foreign affairs of greece to stop trying to influence the international body of nato to change the name-yet again- or you will support fully the culmination of the Bucharest treaty and encourage the country of macedonia to reclaim the land it is entitled to reclaim in the northern part of greece. this is a country deserving the support of our country and we have failed it so many times. history will prove you to be correct in supporting a people who's basement of strength is its strong faith. these are not the people creating instability in this region. Greece has been allowed to attack them for too long. after the treaty, which our country supported, Greece spent huge money on publishing houses in England and successfully changed history according to Greece. the average person in America believes the lies taught in our school materials from those English houses controlled by the Greeks. more recently there was the issue of Greece insisting they change the flag to look like something from China. don't make the mistake of thinking you will suggest to both countries to add some compromise like "the democratic republic of Macedonia"and this will appease Greece. they will not stop here and the next time it will be something like they are not a significant enough country to become a member of NATO. we americans owe to this country for one terrible wrong done to them long ago. i hope you are a lion in your heart like the one missing on the flag of Macedonia.

NATO has become very arrogant it was set up to protect its members inside their borders. By its own hypocritical charter it should not gone on the offense out side its members borders and have attacked Serbia. With no threat in Europe to NATO or anyone saying what are you doing or the mussel at that time to back it up. NATO acted like a pack of ravenous wolves to justify their exsistens and as apple pie humanitarian organization delivering much needed bombs in their warped thinking and opinion. Now with the new members in the east providing a larger buffer to the western Europeans countries borders. They are willing to take more risks and throw caution to the wind. If it comes to blows between NATO and Russia it will happen in the Baltic states ,Poland etc. For this reason NATO is becoming dangerous bully it is easy to miscalculate or push to far with some one and they having enough of it start pushing back. They are cornering their real or prosieved enemies in the corner by their unrelenting expansion. That is a very dangerous policy those leaders and countries are not stupid it could very easily explode in NATOs face and plunge the world in to a another war by their arrogant stupidity.

The NATO expansion should be a clear sign to the EAST that we do NOT tolerate Russia and co.to threaten the American people and all European people. If you wish to be a super power do so economically, with force you shall meet force. I say no to the SCO. I say no to Chinese breaking international law by bombing a satellite 300mi off Earth. I say no to Russia threatening to cut gas & oil to Europe if it does not agree with its' foreign policy. I say no to China every year gearing up for war. I say no to Russia preventing world business to be conducted just so it can gain 2 minutes of air time on TV.

Russian's are more and more anti-West. I have never seen such hatred towards the Americans. Always counter productive, while America tries to stop Iran from making nukes Russia trades Uranium.

Improving Polish's air defense a BIG NO NO but letting Iran, a rogue nation, with Uranium is okay?

Mr. Montgomery writes:

"Whereas then years ago, it could not even afford to fly its planes or send its fleet on cruises, it is now “back” in a military sense. Moreover, it is “back” with an attitude. It is angry at the collapse of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact; angry at NATO’s incursions into its “near abroad,” and particularly outraged by what it perceives as a consistent pattern of insulting, patronizing treatment by NATO countries led by the United States."

And follows by:

"The West thinks the Cold War is something belonging to the history books. Vladimir Putin and the Russian people have a slightly different view."

These two statements are mutually contradictory.

One cannot expand an ostensibly 'defensive' but in reality offensive-on-demand military alliance (against who today?) and then accuse the threatened (real or imagined) party to have been the first in rekindling a 'cold war'.

Just another example of 'have your cake and eat it too' double standard thinking, which has unfortunately become de rigeur in Washington foreign policy circles.

When it comes to anti-satellite technology, it's not a new one. The United States and the Soviet Union tested anti-satellite technology in the 1980s, and the United States shot down one of its orbiting satellites in 1985.
