How funny. Serbia loves Greece and Macedonia, Macedonia Hates Greece and loves Serbia
and Greece loves Serbia and hates Macedonia! And still, Serbs and macedonians love one another! Too complicated!

Given the US is one of the few countries to recognise the state as "Macedonia" I think all this talk that the US is not supportive of their right to the name is nonsense. I think they'd just like a quick resolution to the impasse. That probably won't happen, but due to Greece's NATO veto, it'll just drag on. It's all very much a non-story with nothing new to say.

'He indirectly appealed to Macedonia to compromise, saying that the solution over the name dispute would mean that the U.S. "would pledge itself to defend Macedonia.'

:))
i have to say, i feel for the macedonians, but this is outstandingly funny in its dark absurdity. u.s. destabilizes the region with creating and recognizing the kosovo abomination, encouraging separatists and terrorists in macedonia to cut that country in half, and now says but we will defend you against them if you play ball and forget your name and your constitution?
is macedonia that escaped the 90s madness going to be the biggest loser here with this new chaos?

Indirectly U.S.A is telling Macedonia: you are not macedonians. Go back to your slavic roots. Name the country: Slavs who live in Macedona.

The Greeks knew all along that they were negotiating with the US and not with FYROM over the name issue cos their leadership don't loose time to shout their pro-us credentials especially
their participation in US operations in Iraq and Afganistan. They still haven't
realised they're a little pawn in a large game that is
played in the balkans by the US and EU on one hand and Russia on the other.

Work harder...to bad the US state dept couldn't or wouldn't use that same approach with K. Albanians. More like, say whatever you want, do whatever you want, and you'll be rewarded with an illegal state, amputated from Serbia.

Europeans should be ashamed of themselves for loosing their identity, moral and politcal. You cry out foul for the US invasion of Iraq but cheer with thunderous ovation to the ILLEGAL dismemberment of Serbia. Hypocrites to the end you are!

"UN mediator Matthew Nimetz has proposed five alternative names that Macedonia could consider adopting: Constitutional Republic of Macedonia, Democratic Republic of Macedonia, Independent Republic of Macedonia, New Republic of Macedonia, and Republic of Upper Macedonia"

Am I missing something or what? Each of these proposed names contains the name Macedonia -- which is what created Greece's ire in the first place.

And the US should learn to mind its own business. Not content with invading so many countries in the past decade, it is now even telling sovereign countries to change their names. Maybe it should set an example by changing its own name ..... after all the US of America might be construed to imply territorial claims over other countries in the American continent ie. Canada, Mexico, Venezuela etc. It is already occupying Guantanamo against Cuba's will and Puerto Rico.

Try harder, Macedonia. If you don't comply, well, you know what happens then, right? The US State Dept. will "encourage" you to do so. Welcome to the New World Order!

I propose Greece should change its name to Macedonia, if they believe they are Macedonians?? Or the Macedonians change it to Northern Macedonia.
