"State Dept.: Kosovo will overcome challenges"

Is this the same state departement that said that Iraq will be a democratic lightpost in the middle east, an example of democracy for other to follow?

They have a history of not so good predictions than..

But I forgot, Kosovo is a "unique" case, they will prosper and probably be the next Switzerland or Germany in the SE Europe..
If they could only get a few billions of EURO and dollars in wellfare first, THEN they will be richest in Europe..

Ahmed:

Nothing wrong with optimism. But most of the time, reality prevails.

Reality is that there are several members of both EU & NATO that have not recognised Kosovo & won't do so as is against their interests. And most if not all of these will make use of veto in respective organisations. And it only takes one.

This is one 'private club' K-albanian 'pseudo-state' won't be joining.

Optimism it seems can sometimes transform into fantasy.

Bad Gorilla:

US is a country that has lost all credibility in international affairs. And this isn't just my opinion, it is also the majority opinion in just about every country in the world - save the US, Albania & a couple of others (Costa Rica et al).

Even some americans apologise for the actions of their own government - especially when they go overseas.

Fried is US deputy secretary of state & state is the primary US department responsible for that opinion.

By 'definition', whatever he says is wrong - is simply a matter of statistics.

fatmir Kosova:
"God bless USA"

Will be interesting if K-albanians still say that in a few years time when CIA starts the 'rendition' of mis-guided K-albanian youth fresh out of the newly-built madrasses in Kosovo.

Believe Bush just vetoed legislation calling for CIA torture method called 'water-boarding' to be outlawed.

Must be thinking to the future I guess..

Bad Gorilla,

Just a few days ago there was an article in a leading Dutch newspaper (De Volkskrant) about how K-Serbs still were living in enclaves. If they wanted to visit another Serb enclave they had to be escorted by UN soldiers. Apparently, for the K-Serbs in the enclaves nothing has changed since 17 February. Hope that the promises of Mr. Thaci will not be just empty words.

Cyprus will not recognise Kosovo, even if it is reunited. The Greek Cypriots fear that after any settlement the urkish Cypriots will again try to break away. They will therefore make sure that they will not endorse the Kosovo precedent that some states have sought to create. For this reason, the other EU/NATO members that oppose will continue to resist. I am afraid that you will have to face the raelity that you 'independence' is a complete sham given to keep the Kosovo Albanians happy and stop them from turning violent. It really means nothing.

You are true entertainer over here. I am amazed by your optimism. Keep hoping it is good for the well –being. Can you imagine, Kosovo in EU, Kosovo in UN, Kosovo in what not……….wow, that’s something.

Both NATO and EU are private clubs where UN resolutions are not taken into consideration.Kosova has up to now 21 declarations or intentions to recognise our independence.Greece and Cyprus will recognise us as soon as the Cyprus problem is out of the Way,possibly this year. The EU troika has said that Kosova belongs to EU.It is not unrealistic to pencil the date as 2012 when we.ll become NATO and EU members.

Bad Gorilla

Fried is right.

From February 17 until now most of the problems and turmoil after independence were not created by Albanian-spaking Kosovars, but by Serbs, mainly outside Kosovo. No church destructions, no persecutions of Serbs, no agitation with other Albanian-speaking peoples in Macedonia, Montenegro or Albania (even Presevo Vally has been peaceful), no Grater Albania.

Comparing with the nationalist fans of Obraz and Karadzic, it’s a huge difference.

And about all this talk of “puppet state”, Serbia should open its eyes to the fact that it carries the risk of being puppeted… by Russia.

After reading this article I am completely convinced that this puppet NATO entity is doomed to failure.

Firstly Serbia treats Kosovo as her own. Montenegro will only recognise Kosovo if the EU ever does (unlikely) and Thaci demanded recognition from "Makedonjia" to settle the border dispute. All "friendly" gestures indeed!

The more the US and Albanians repeat they are independence without UN/EU approval the more this confirms the status of a puppet entity. By definition "The concept of a "puppet state" implies some deliberate attempt to deceive. Either the citizens of the alleged puppet state or the international community are assumed to be deceived into believing that the puppet state is really independent when it is not."

The definition continues as "a state that has been created by the intervention of an external power in territory under the sovereignty of another state. In this respect, a puppet state is a secessionist state enabled and supported by an external power"

And finally "it lacks sovereign legality (because it was created in breach of the rules of sovereign succession)."

But is it still only a Puppet entity and not a state as a large portion of people are still loyal to Belgrade and not the invading force!
